Checking BF%

I'm wondering, how do you check your body fat %? I mean, exactly, not this "If you're this tall and this age you should weight THIS much". Something more exact than that. Is there something I could order to check it if need be? Thanks!

There are a couple of ways to measure body fat %. The most practical methods are a) using calipers to measure skin folds and b) using a device that sends weak electric signals through your body (bioelectrical impedance analysis).

The device is more expensive than the calipers but easier to use and they're both accurate. Just don't trust any site that asks you to just enter your weight, height, and age. As you know, they are unreliable.

I just bought a bathroom scale yesterday that measures weight (doh!), BF%, water%, bone mass and gives a recommended calorie intake as well. You program it with your sex, age, height and activity level. It measures to .2lbs and .1% BF%. There are many scales to choose from in various price ranges. The one I got was the Tanita Innerscan. I read that Tanitia is supposed to be a good brand for BF% analysis. I stepped on it a few times and each time it gave me the same results which is good (our previous bathroom scale I needed to stand on it like 4 times and take the average just to get my weight!).

Remember that when you use an electronic device to measure BF%, the time of day that you measure should be consistent since your levels change throughout the day (especially water%). I measured myself yesterday and was sitting at 19.1%. Although that is in the healthy range I need to get that way down.
