Cate's Diary

My parents´ dogs are inquisitive little things and used to dig under the fence a lot. Now that the fence extends down more than a meter below the ground they no longer do so but last week one of them climbed over it to get into the neighbors garden. Somehow all our dogs have been secret half-bears.

When do you know when you get the dog?

Hey, Archie looks like a great dog! Hope it works out.

There are easy fixes for pet doors in sliding glass doors, the simplest is just a panel that fits into the door, not much installing involved. I have used them a number of time, work well and do no damage to the door, very easily removed. Here is an example. https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Freedom-Aluminum-Sliding-Adjustable/dp/B005CO91TK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=ROK1U7F8MBXV&dchild=1&keywords=pet+door+sliding+glass+door&qid=1589371703&sprefix=pet+door+slidin,aps,175&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE1MEdYUlBJUzMxVUsmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1OTA5MjMzUjlKWFBHSkJYT00mZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDgxNDA2OTE0UlBXREFSRkhaMEEmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl The training is necessary so the dog knows where it can go, its important to walk the dog in the safe area more than testing the boundary.

As to a fence, Petal and LaMa are right dogs often figure out a way under or over. What I have always done is to use an "invisible" fence, an antenna wire buried along the perimeter of where you want the dog to go and the dog wears a collar. When the dog gets close to the wire a sound warns and then if they get closer they get a harmless but startling shock. I find that with proper training they work very well, never had a dog escape one. If you already have fencing you can run the wire along the fence and it makes training easier. In my experience they cost less and work better than fencing. Here is a link to the kind we use: DogWatch® - The Original Hidden Dog Fence Company

Have fun with your dog, hope it works out!

I find the middle of the night is when I worry, Petal, but you're right. We'll work it out.
Isn't it funny that--i'm often the same way. Middle of the night everything seems insurmountable. In the morning one can usually get better perspective. It'll be good once you get Archie in and learn about him as a dog, and you all will learn the best way to be together. I'm a real planner and think about everything that can go wrong ahead of time and in some ways that can help in that you can plan for stuff (like getting the doggy door) but on the other hand overthinking things can get stressful and create problems where there are none! I'm way too good at that :) I'm really happy for you about getting him.

Archie is currently with K9 & has had his medical & we are definitely getting him. We have arranged to go down to pick him up on Saturday so that we can get to see K9 as well as R. I am so excited!! She sent me a video of him. He sure needs a haircut. Such a cutie!
@alligatorob Thanks for the links. That pet door looks excellent. I'll see if they are available here or will fit our doorway. That's a much better alternative than having a whole door replaced with something permanent & would look much better as well.
@liza Usually I can stop myself going over & over things in the middle of the night by saying "Stop!" & then thinking of my youngest grandson. I am so excited about getting Archie. Now I need dog clippers & a doggy bed. We will get used to one another & learn to be together. It is exciting!
I suggested to G that the yard needs brush cutting & he's heading outside now to pick the rhubarb before doing it. Our yard is dog safe as we had terriers who loved to try to escape.

Yesterday ended up being an ok eating day, but nowhere near a fast day. Probably about 1000 cals all up, maybe less.

Congrats on Archie! You will have fun together I am sure.

1,000 calories is a pretty low calorie day, seems like you are doing fine!

Salute to you, Cate, for your unrelenting struggle against the spammers - and Tru, too, I believe, and I daresay others elsewhere. (Putting it here rather than up there in the Welcome thread to try not to catch their eye.)

Thanks, Rob. I feel like I'm doing fine. I'll be getting even more active soon. I think he'll be an energetic boy :)

Thanks, Amy. Sometimes they drive me bananas. There is a relentless string of the same thing at the moment. It used to be keto this & keto that. They do make me swear.
Is it silly that I´m genuinely excited for Archie to arrive?
Not silly at all. It's lovely, LaMa. I was so excited earlier that I thought my heart was going to jump out of my body. Since then G & I have been carting & spreading wood chip & have filled out the whole house garden that will be Archie's domain. We also built some rock steps. I'm knackered.
aw i bet you and Archie are going to be great friends!
Thanks, Liza, That's sweet. I can't wait & I get to see R & K9 as well. Which reminds me- I had better ask K to email me a letter in case I get pulled up by the police. Travelling to pick up a dog that may have been put down otherwise is essential travel. I rang the hotline to make sure.
We're going down there on Saturday & Archie will most probably spend the night at R's tomorrow night with the 2 of them.

Oh, boy there has been some confusion about the how & when we are picking up Archie. It stems from most people, including K9, preferring to text, rather than actually making a call. I find messages can be easily misunderstood. Then there's going through another person, R who I thought had arranged it all with K9. Last night I got a message from Archie's owner saying she'll ring me today to work out when I'm picking him up & to have a chat about him. It's all a bit confusing. I don't know if K will pick him up tonight or tomorrow morning. I think R wanted to see her a day earlier but was also looking forward to spending some time with Archie as well. I have no idea what will happen there, but as far as I know, G & I are driving down tomorrow to R's to pick him up & catch up with R & K9. I did get some sleep, but I really hate confusion.
Did I say that A has a uti & may need a special diet? K9 doesn't think he has stones. I said we'd take him anyway. I am slightly nervous about it all. Wish me luck.

It should all work out! Good luck!

Thanks, Rob & Misty.
I have ironed out all the details, with Archie's #1 Mum (E), K9 & R. E will meet us at R's house tomorrow morning at about 11.30 am. We'll get there before then & R is going to feed us lunch & then we'll head home with him & his meds & special food & a new bed which K9 is organising & some of his favourite toys that E will bring along with him. I'm much happier with this arrangement. It was just way too complicated otherwise.
G & I got some wood today. I'll need to go for a walk this afternoon to get my steps up, but having a rest right now, with a pot of herbal tea.

Nice to have that plan straightened out Cate--sounds like a good one.
It'll be fun to hear of all your adventures with Archie :)
