Cate's Diary

Apparently eating something high-carb (like a slice of bread, well-chewed) can help to fall asleep again more easily.

Did you get back to sleep? I think you must have! And so another day begins in the beautiful Tasmanian bush. :)
Loved the photos of the just-as-lovely nearby town - you have such a wonderful choice of places to walk. I'm glad the G's finger is healing well - that was a terrible experience - for him, but especially for you. So glad you are having a quiet time to let that settle - for all the shock and distress to gradually grow new skin, so to speak.

LaMa- I think I was wide awake as we had too big a dinner (venison shank with vegetables). The orange helped my digestion, but I was up for a couple of hours. I went back to bed at 4 & then G started snoring, so I went into another bed & managed to sleep until 7.30.
Amy- I did, thank goodness. Our nearby town is very picturesque. We try not to drive anywhere unless we have to, but I think we'll do this walk at least once a week as it's very therapeutic. You're right about G's accident. It all felt fairly traumatic, especially when we were carefully avoiding going near anyone, let alone medical centres or hospitals. It's a big relief that it is healing.

I feel ok today. I think the grumpiness and tears will come and go, but with that also comes joy in my surroundings, gratitude for the people I love & who love me, music, hilarious memes, golf videos.........
Speaking of golf. I'm going to message M, who's husband died over Easter & ask her if she wants to play 9 holes one day next week.
I'm fasting today. My new "fasting" is somewhere between 500-800 cals twice a week. I figure that's better than not at all. I did some light weights & squats yesterday & have been getting my steps in each day. I'll weigh myself again tomorrow.
Edit: I have changed my avatar to the blue-footed booby, because they make me smile :)

That's great Cate. Glad you're feeling better. Yes definitely-- we'll all have our times of sadness, with or without the additional stress covid is adding to our lives. Glad you have lots of positives to focus on!

Thanks, Liza & LaMa. Boobies are very cute. Their mating dance ritual is very funny. I am looking for things that make me smile & trying not to read too much of the news. Unfortunately, we have had another death in NW Tassie. Per capita, Tassie has the most deaths in Aus, almost all down to the Ruby Princess cruise ship that was allowed to dock in Sydney & the passengers were hurried off without any testing.
LaMa- I am eating well each day so it should end up in weight-loss.

G & I went for a nice walk. It was overcast & started to rain & we both had a leech on our boots, but luckily neither attached. Ugh. Leeches :(

Every time you mention leeches I think of leachies (rhacodactylus leachianus, or the leachianus gecko), which are way more fun. I can just imagine one sitting on your boot and wondering where the bus is going.

Hi Cate - when I first saw "boobies are cute", I thought something a little different. Then I realized that was your new profile pic, and I still agree - boobies are cute!

LaMa- I looked up the Leachianus gecko & they are very cute, but by no stretch of the imagination are they interchangeable with creepy little leeches that want to suck my blood! I would be quite happy taking a little skink for a walk through the bush. Have you seen Death In Paradise, the TV series. There is such a cute bright-green gecko in it.
Jack- haha. I think most of us are amused by the name. Watch a video of a male blue-footed booby trying to woo a female. Hilarious.

They are funny, Em. The offering of a stick is quirky :)
Nothing planned for today. Walking is making me feel better, but I'm finding it hard to make them feel different.
I woke up feeling short of breath & exhausted. I just took my BP & it's 95/61. I had better keep an eye on that. I'll take it easy today.

Trying to make the walks feel different and interesting do you mean? I was thinking that myself today as i generally take the same route, away from the town so i run into less people, encounter inclines, lots of loveliness, but yes nothing like the variety I had in the past. Of course there is always something different and new each time--a new flower blooming, a slug on route (luckily not leeches!), a tree in a new phase of being...
but yes not the variety of trails and people to walk with etc.
I don't know anything about bp numbers but I do hope all this isn't having a bad effect on that for you...i guess that's where a dog would come in handy again...maybe would add variety/interest to your walks as well...i know you're undecided on that though and I can understand that.

Now to look up blue footed booby mating rituals....

Cate hope the BP is ok . I need to start taking mine now daily for an online doc appt next week .
It's hard to keep the walks interesting but I'm trying . Craving going somewhere different. I loved the photos of your town . It's so so beautiful

... All geckos are amazing.
a few decades ago, i was working with the Navy and got to spend nearly a month on Kauai. unfortunately there was a golf tournament in the area so i had to stay on the boat a few of the weeks, but one amazing week i got a call from the local B&B people who asked if i was still looking to stay in the area. for $35/day (!!!!) i got an above-the-garage apartment w/ kitchen, bedroom, sitting room, porch overlooking the shoreline, all because the couple that showed up for their week stay left after ~30 minutes. the woman saw a gecko on the wall and ran out of the place fast according to the host.

fyi... geckos eat cockroaches. if Hawaii had no geckos, they would be in big bug trouble. have to admit, their bark is a little disconcerting.

Noticed your avatar change, love it, so cute!

Emotions tend to be pretty up and down during this time. Yesterday I was soaring and today I am lacking motivation. But definitely getting out is the right thing to do. You seem to be managing tremendously well during this time! <3

Flyer- I wonder why the blue tit is called a blue tit when it's yellow? A week on Kauai with a view of the shoreline & geckos? Wow!
Liza- Things don't change much from one walk to another, but do a little. If we go off the beaten track that's when we get the leeches. I really hate leeches. I think we'll do more walks along the roads. It's nice to be able to sing out hello to other humans. I think I will be getting a dog, but it may take a while. A friend rang last night asking if I was interested in getting a Jack Russel. She has just got a pup. They shed a lot & I have Asthma & allergies so had to say no. I had one once before & had to give him away on doctor's orders.
LaMa- I know. How cute are bright green geckos?
Petal- I felt better as the day went on, but had a lazy day. I had better take my BP each day for a while too.
Em- Thanks. I did eat a bit more & am reconsidering the "fasts".

Yesterday G & I took our recycling & rubbish (1 bag only) to the tip in the afternoon as we had over a months worth. We also take an elderly neighbours recycling. I had let our grandson know that we would take his if he had it sorted & ready. Hmm. There were about 12 or so big bags of rubbish & about 6 small bags of recycling. He & his housemate got a bit of a lecture. It was revolting, with leaking, smelly bags. When we got to the tip it was also a mess as they had run out of the big bags for recycling & everything was overflowing. Yuck! Not a pleasant job. I hope they get themselves better sorted. Maybe they need a compost bin, even though they don't garden at all.

Hi, Misty. I think getting outside & walking is the key to my mental wellbeing, especially now. I do miss other humans. I never quite know how I am going to be, but luckily today I feel good & we'll go for a big walk up the road. I'll take a bag with me for either apples or lemons as I have noticed a few trees near the road :)

not the best pose or rendering...
