Cate's Diary

It was a good day Petal & I had another good night's sleep & am heading to golf soon. I won't have time to type in all of the diaries, but I think I can have a quick squiz!

"Squiz" - that's a new one for me! I love it! It'd be nice to hear everyone's accents too but right now I'm just imaging.

Hi, Rob. My breakfast often is organic oats(40-60g) rather than a packaged cereal. I add chia, sunflower & hemp seeds, some dried goji berries, and a few "fresh" berries & soak it all in low-fat milk or almond milk overnight. On golf days I might add a small banana & a teaspoon of honey. Next morning I zap it in the microwave for 2 minutes & add a dollop of full-fat Greek yoghurt. It's very filling

Cate, you posted this on Rob's diary but I'm interested in it. How do you do oats overnight? What kind of oats do you get? I think there are 3 varieties - steel cut, rolled, and instant? I would probably use almond milk and include seeds but maybe there are more traditional or other popular options. I've seen them discussed before on the forum.

My kids both use rolled oats for porridge or for overnight oats. They also put in smoothies. Cates oats recipe sounds really nice

Your time in town sounds so good - and I love that your husband arranged a pick-me-up haircut!
On another topic, I'm very glad you have such good access to fresh air to recover from those assaults on your breathing. :(

So happy you are feeling better enough to socialize, and nice you got a cheer-up hair cut! You and your husband sound like 2 peas in a happy pod!
Thank you, Marsia. That comment made me smile. We don't always agree with everything, but we both do really care for one another.

I usually don't use words that I think are only used in Australia (or the UK) but love to throw them in from time to time. I do love the differences between languages & cultures. My sister, who lived in Baltimore for 28 years or so got upset with me for changing my language when I visited her. She was very homesick for Australia & wanted to hear my usual Australian accent, instead of my toned down visiting the US one. There was a cultural cringe happening here for a long time & Aussie slang was frowned down on, but I have noticed I have gone back to using a lot of the old expressions. Language is fun.
The oats I buy as far as I know are rolled oats. I buy them in a whole foods store. I choose the organic ones, but they are probably double the price of the ordinary. I wouldn't ever buy the heavily processed, fine ones as I want the fibre. I weighed them out initially but now just do an approximate. It would be somewhere between 50-60g usually. I vary what I add each time, but lately, I have added about a cup of either almond milk or low-fat milk, a teaspoon each of sunflower seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, a sprinkle of dried goji berries (just because I bought some with my last vitamin/tea order from iherb & they are delicious) & a small sprinkle of some mixed dried fruit that I am slowly getting rid of. I usually have some frozen raspberries & blackberries thawed in the fridge & I add a few of these as well. I make sure everything is covered with the milk & put the bowl in the fridge overnight. Next morning I take it out & add a bit more milk if it has all been absorbed & zap in the microwave for 2 minutes. If I have woken up ravenous and/or I am playing golf that day, I sometimes add half a banana & sometimes a teaspoon of honey before I heat it. Topped off with a dollop of Greek yoghurt it sustains me without any hunger until lunchtime easily. The expression that springs to mind with my porridge is that "it sticks to your guts". You just have to have things in your pantry to add. The hemp seeds I keep in the fridge.
Hi, Petal. I didn't like oats when I was a kid, but they were always very basic & very gluggy.
Hi, Amy. We always try to turn a trip into town into something nice if we can. We also stocked up on some bubbly :)

I played golf again yesterday & while I didn't play particularly well I did win my division & nearest the pin. I walked 11,2 km! I was so tired last night I fell sound asleep in my chair at 8.30 for about an hour & then had trouble getting to sleep at bed-time. I then slept in.
A day at home today to recover!

I love all your Australia-isms!

I made granola for my mom today with zero cal sugar and it came out good. It's too many carbs for me, but I sampled some and got all happy!

So happy you are golfing so regularly and doing so well with it! I am inspired to get out and walk more!!

I love the language variation too. You Aussies have some pretty creative words!

Thanks for the info on your oats. My mouth is watering. It sounds delicious. I can think of some variations I'll try but it's helpful to know the details of how you make this. Goji berries sound interesting. Will play around with it.

I agree on the language thing, I would love to hear you and a lot of the others speak, the accents would be a lot of fun. Maybe we should do a conference call just to listen to each other!

We watch some of your TV programs from time to time, one of my favorites is Rake. I suspect they probably dampen the use of unique words to make the shows more marketable internationally, but the accents are probably real.

We grew up with neighbours and home and away . Always loved the accents.
Cate my daughter makes oats a bit like you . She sometimes adds a bit of coco powder. I had frozen goji berries recently ,really enjoyed them but it was so expensive unfortunately.

We also stocked up on some bubbly :)
:D You never know when it might come in handy!

Ah, sleep disruptions! But at least this one was fairly come by, and the day at home to recover will sort things out, I trust! Also congrats on winning your division! :)

Thanks, folks. I won't catch up individually as it would be another great long post. I think the accents in Rake are fairly accurate. I'm not a big fan of Cleaver Green, the main character so don't watch it. Have never watched home and away or neighbours either. When I was in the US I used to get chatting to the checkout chicks when I did my sisters shopping & I was always asked where I came from. "Are you English? "Whenever I said Australia, you would hear a sigh & almost all would say "Oh, Australia- I would love to go there!" It was nice. I don't use much slang like "fair dinkum" but I do say "crikey".
I have had a lovely, peaceful day. I just polished off an interesting book, set in Tasmania. It's called Arcadia & is by Di Morrissey. It conveys the feeling of the forrests really well. The story is slightly corny, but sometimes I can just enjoy that. For someone who wasn't actually born in Tasmania, I think I am just as passionate as anyone about living here.

Ah, no. No-one says "flaming galah". Often accents are really exaggerated (& made up) for TV. I had to look up Alf Stewart. I have never watched Home & Away. The ads are enough to put me off.
Of course, we could catch up Em if you came to Tasmania.

We are having a tidy up day today & D & the kids are coming up to stay tonight as D is working tomorrow & I'm having the kids for the day. G is playing golf as his new club has their AGM) I'm up early today as I actually went to bed early (10 pm). I might get on the move I think!
Yesterday's food was-
BF- mushroom omelette on oat toast
Lunch- cold corned beef, green tomato pickles & lots of veg, followed by fresh fruit salad (honeydew melon, cantaloupe, pineapple, orange, kiwi fruit, raspberries, blackberries & passionfruit) with a small scoop of icecream.
Dinner-Pho Bo followed by an apple.
1 glass of red wine before dinner.

Your food today looks good, Cate, especially that fruit salad. Wow!

I'm making some oats tonight. I even got some goji berries which I just happened to see out of the corner of my eye in the farmer's market store. I have some fresh berries too I may add in.

Oh, your lunch looks divine. I shouldn't be reading this during fasting time! Yay for getting a good night's sleep and rising early - I hope to do that tonight, too. Happy day with the grand kids - hope it's a really fun one!!

I have to confess I might not be much better, the Australian accent sounds an awful lot like the English to me, sometimes I can figure it out, but not always. Now Irish is clearly different, never have trouble identifying that one. And I'd love to get to Australia too, hopefully it will happen one day, I think most Americans would we have a very favorable view of Australia. When you were in Baltimore did you appreciate the local accent? I think its pretty unique.

I don't use much slang like "fair dinkum" but I do say "crikey"
You need to do a dictionary for us, I am not sure what either of those mean.

Cate we say crikey too but of course been Irish we say the F word quite a lot . I do try not too but sometimes it's extremely satisfying.

I need to ask what is Pho Bo ? You had it for dinner .
Cate I'm so tired I go to bed most nights by 10 or 11 pm. Your day with grandkids sounds fun so hope you enjoyed .
