Cate's Diary

Sounds like a really good day with all that exercise, good company, and a fire. I love the word shemozzle - never heard that before! Bad blood pressure joke - made my heart skip a beat!!

Hi Cate, I’m sorry to see you haven’t been enjoying the last few days but you know you’ve got this right? You seem very adaptable and determined. I’m extremely confident that you’ll find a way through.

I love the word shemozzle :D
You actually just made me giggle! I get my love of unusual sounding words like Vladivostok etc from my Dad & my weird sense of humour from my Mum.
I cracked a really offkey joke on Monday with G's friends & have felt bad since. I told my sister what I said & she burst into giggles :blush5:

Thanks, TM. I really appreciate your support. I'm bouncing right back again already xo
I got my bike outside, rode 3 km, went for a 1.87 km walk into the bush, where I meditated for 5 mins, with my eyes closed, listening to the birds. Bliss!

A typo hadn't even occurred to me, LaMa. I think I hear so much criticism of longer handicap golfers, that I get a bit touchy about it.
Being in nature & appreciating it is doing wonders for my soul xo

My August challenge to myself is to do a minimum of each of these, daily-
2.5 km exercise bike, which is now outside ✅
1 km walk outside ✅
>1440 steps ✅
5 mins mindfulness meditation ✅
<1500 cals ( can consume some of my exercise calories) ✅
<1800 mg sodium ✅
no more than 2 glasses of wine, but try to only have one ✅ (a tick means 1 or none)✅
Days 1 & 2 ✅
I'm happy with my start to the month. Had a facetime call with R this morning, which was nice. I also rang three women I have been meaning to ring for a while- a SIL & 2 golfers, who I have not seen for a while & miss. I enjoyed my day at home on my own & G enjoyed his golf day.

Hey Cate, thanks for your nice words and support on my diary, I appreciate it.

Well I did ok with your "Dry July" challenge, my July wasn't completely dry but I did drink a whole lot less than in the months before. So I think it was worthwhile. I went from an average of probably 10 to 15 ounces of alcohol (as pure alcohol) a week to about 3. I plan to try and stick with the lower rate of consumption.

Good luck with your new August challenge, it makes sense and doesn't seem like it would be too hard for you to follow.

Hi Cate, I like your August list too! It all sounds doable and enjoyable too. And with all the outside time you’re getting — you don’t seem a stressed out person, but still, that’s gotta be good for the soul. Did you mention a new med too at one point? All these positive changes are bound to catch up to your blood pressure.

I took the dogs for a long walk out in the country for the first time yesterday around 6 pm. We usually stick to short walks in town. It was awesome. Don’t know why I haven’t been doing it all along, but I’d like to do a longer one today. It felt good. And their pace was quite brisk so that was extra good haha! I’ll have to be careful because it is quite remote and the weather can turn fast but as long as temps are decent, I’m hopeful I can do it a lot more.

Hope you are having a good day!

alligatorob- You're welcome. My dry July "challenge" also had me cut right down, but not going dry either. It made me much more aware & I think I reduced my alcohol consumption down to about a third as well. My new "challenge" is about setting a baseline that should be achievable & not freak me out. Feeling like a failure is not good for my self-esteem or motivation.
davisgirl- There's something about walking in nature. I'm sure your dogs would love it too. Even when I'm walking down to the letterbox & back (1km) I wear a Tatonka bum bag with a small water bottle, a puffer, tissues, a whistle, bandaids etc. I'm also going to start tying on a light rain jacket. I have never been used to wearing a backpack, but a small one would be a good idea.
lama-thank you :)
I just had another look at my August goals & they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely)
G & I are off to the tip today & it's sunny right now. I'll come back later xo

...

"your golfers" in my instance, are mostly women well over 70, some in their 80's who are out there on the golf course, pushing their own buggies around. I doubt any of them have ever used a caddy or would want to. I'm one of the youngest, which I find amusing really.

..
to become a member at Baltusrol, someone had to die, so there weren't a whole lot of young members on the course. the ladies seemed old, but i was in my teens so that probably skewed my perception. caddying for ladies was a usually a mixed blessing. they were the most consistent golfers and most of them could have gotten away with maybe 5 clubs. but you could count on the minimum $/bag... no tip regardless of how good a job you did. in their defense.... the men usually had so many bets going on in the round, their caddy expense was probably in the noise. also the men played more with guests and if you could give a distance of suggest a club that worked out, they'd remember that on the 18th green.

A good addition to your bag would be a compression bandage, to cover yourself for snake bite, especially when the weather warms up a bit.

Flyer- it all sounds like another world. The thought of someone caddying for any of our small group is just unimaginable as most won't even have a motorised push buggy. "They are for old people". If it was the culture here to have a caddy our group would be daunting. They just wouldn't like it all.
Tru- After our last year's snake sightings I added a compression bandage.

Coming in late to say: I really like your August goals, and love the array of green ticks for the last two days - best wishes for the month!

I should probably adopt the sodium one myself - I'm a bit of a salt junkie. Do you actually measure out the day's allowance? Does humidity get to it, in a dish? (I'm imagining a small amount of salt measured out into a little dish, and used bit by bit through the day.) Or do you just know how much is in a shake?

Having a caddy just sounds so elitist around here.

Thanks, Amy. I'm not adding any salt at all to my food now & going on what MFP tells me as to the things I eat & their sodium. I was recommended 2300 mg, so I aimed for 1800 because.....well that's how I roll. I don't have shakes & don't eat much in the way of processed food at all.

Absolutely, TM. Even getting around in ride-on buggies seems elitist here, unless you are incapable of walking around 18 holes.

i hesitate to bring it up, but even when the members decided to get a cart, they were required to have a caddy go along to take the pins, rake traps, forecaddy, etc. though, however close the movie Caddyshack came to nailing the elite club membership where i worked, the caddy makeup as all young white kids couldn't have been further from the truth. frankly, being in the minority, it was a great introduction to the working world to discover great guys as well as dumbasses came in all sizes, shapes and colors.

I’m always amazed at the number of people who hire golf carts! I have a couple of pull buggies that I use if I’m playing a competitive round but if I’m just playing with other hacks don’t need to worry about overworking my shoulder I’ll pop the clubs into the “stand bag” and carry it on my back. Soooo much easier. Half the enjoyment of golf is the walking around.

Oh, wow. I'm sure there would be clubs like that in Australia too, but mostly I think they are like ours. We certainly get our exercise raking bunkers, fixing up our own divots, plug marks, pushing our own buggies etc but that's why we still play. I'm certainly not playing because I'm a great golfer. You're right there are dumbass snobs everywhere in the world & I'm glad I'm not one of them. I wouldn't play on a snobby course.
