Cate's Diary

Well done on no wine and losing half a kilo! Remember you weighed after a double fast though, so your guts would have been more empty than normal (I know I´m a downer).
I know that, of course. I have been fasting 2 days a week for almost 2 months though & this loss is something I have to hang onto to maintain hope. Not drinking any wine has helped me stay under my TDEE on NFD's & I'm sure has been good for me as a mental exercise. G is currently having a red wine while I am drinking an unpleasant Kombucha, luckily the last one I have.
How are you getting on with your exercises? Maybe next time you can get some specific knee stuff from your therapist? The world needs you as healthy as you can be!
I don't think I am going back to the exercise therapist as most of my troubles started with that day. I haven't wanted to say so before.
I plan on being as healthy as I can & I think I will go back to doing more walking & doing what I did before, when my knee feels better.
Your holiday sounds amazing. Greece is really beautiful. I've never been to Italy but the food is meant to be exquisite.
It does, doesn't it? I absolutely love Italy & the food is exquisite! I have wanted to go to Venice since reading the first Donna Leon book in the Guido Brunetti series & have fallen more in love with Venice with every book in the series. I SO love those books.
The Greek islands have been on my bucket list forever.
I am enjoying my NFD's & do not over-indulge at all. It feels like such a positive change that on the days when I could eat much more, that I don't. I do enjoy every morsel though.

Wow, I have always wanted to go to Crete to the Palace of Knossos and to the The Heraklion Archaeological Museum. I love Minoan art. My ex-mother-in-law went and really loved it! I adore the Peggy Gugenheim Museum in Venice, too, if you haven't been, it's very lovely (well, even if you have been!) Sounds like an amazing vacation, with so much incredible cuisine, too!!!

Are you going to pick out outfits to wear and then use them as motivation to get skinnier by then? We may do a nice little Hawaii vacation in the winter, so I am going to find an outfit or two to lay out for motivation for that! I adore the Asian markets in Hawaii. Such wonderful seafood, and my favorite thing in the world is waterfall hopping! Here's to getting in nice shape for our vacations! :)

I´m sorry to hear you´ve not felt well with your new exercises! That´s a definite disadvantage of counseling people you´ve never seen before: it´s awfully hard to pick the right exercises AND to get people comfortable enough with them that they can do them on their own. Hopefully you´ll be able to build your own little plan anyway because your knee giving way sounds terribly unpleasant.
I love the sound of your travel plans though, both the real and the imaginary ones :grouphug:

Marsia- I'll start doing some serious research, now that I have decided that is where we will go. I have made a note of the museum in Venice, Marsia. G doesn't think we would go to Crete. I will have a whole year to lose enough weight that I will feel slim & able to wear what I like & buy some clothes while we're away. I am so excited about going to the Greek Islands & I plan on swimming!
LaMa- I think I was so enthusiastic the day I saw the EP that I overdid it & just can't maintain that amount of enthusiasm & energy. It's OK. I'll get back into a pattern of consistent exercise when I can get my body healed. I'm going to go for another massage next Thursday.
Day 7 of no alcohol :) I'm pleased with myself that I have stuck with this. It will do me good to break out of the "most days" habit. I have a next week plan, which will be 4 days alcohol-free & 3 days (golf day, Sat & one more day if/when I feel like it, I can have a couple of glasses of wine).

I disappear for a day and miss lots and lots .
I would really love to go to Crete and all the Greek islands . I read a fabulous book called Eleni that was set during times of trouble in Greece and it really opened my eyes to the poverty and the hardship that the Greeks suffered. I think it was during the world war but I must recheck that . Well worth a read .

I have lots of books set in Greece the island is a must read it’s about the proof colony .

Cate I hope you are doing ok . Sorry about the therapist and I think myself we need to do what we enjoy .
Keep up the good work you will get there . It’s not a race but a road to be slowly travelled

Thanks, LaMa. Today is the first day that I missed not having a wine. One thing in my favour is that I am a very determined person. I was determined that I wanted to complete a whole week of no alcohol! Check.
Hi, Petal. I'm ok thanks, hon. I'm in a bit of pain & am very stiff, but I think I'll come right. I agree with you that we should be doing what we enjoy. I'm working towards being as fit, healthy & happy as I can be & there's no hurry. Thanks for your encouragement xo

Wow, that's so great you broke the pattern with sipping wine every day. That's usually the hardest part for me! Sending little gentle hugs to your knee. Hope it heals up quick! Does it help to put warm on it to get the blood flow for healing?

Cate, I salute you on the No Wine 7-Day Challenge. You did good girl.

I am going to embark on this journey a week after you, you have paved the way for me. Not tonight though, tonight we drink!

Santorini is gorgeous, you should visit there. It's a laidback spot as well, not very big. If you stay overnight anywhere, try to get a place on the clifftop, it's absolutely stunning. The sunsets, my friend! I'm sure it's similar on a lot of the Greek isles.

Well done going dry for a week, I understand it is hard but probably not a true understanding because I am almost a non drinker, probably only 1 drink every six months or so.

Thanks, Marsia. My knee is a little better this morning. I'm meant to be playing golf tomorrow, but it if it's sore when I wake up, I won't.
Thanks, Em. It sounds silly I know, but I do feel a little proud of myself for getting through the 7 days w/o a sip. I realise it is a firmly entrenched habit & they are the hardest to break. Santorini looks like such a magical place. I can now start really planning. For the first time in my life, I am tempted to wing it a little & not over plan. I'm not sure I can.
Thanks, Tru. Drinking wine together has always been one of our shared pleasures & also was tangled up in our jobs. G managed wine stores, we had a restaurant & then a pub. Holidays were spent (BC) touring wine districts, we had friends who were chefs & wine journalists & so on. It's not something I want to give up entirely, but certainly, I do not want it to be an everyday thing. My metabolism is not what it once was. (Ha! Classic understatement).

G & I are headed to Hobart for another couple of nights. The small dinner we were having tonight with another couple became with 4, which was fine, but now has become 14. Ugh! I guess it won't kill me, but I wish I hadn't suggested going out to dinner at all. We could have just gone out with our son as he's going to be at home for a few hours now as he is no longer working. Bugger!

It's raining steadily now. We're not in a hurry to leave today. Check in isn't until 2. I'm quite anxious about this weekend. We're staying at a different hotel & I'm nervous about it. I have contacted them about being so fragrance sensitive, but am so used to people not taking much notice that it scares me. Also, I don't know a few of the women coming to dinner tonight, but I know 2 are older & usually older women wear strong perfume. I'll try to seat myself away from them.

That sounds like a nightmare to me, especially if you don´t know half of them. But if the core group is people you really like I´m sure their friends are pleasant as well. Fingers crossed for both the hotel and the restaurant having bearable air.

Hi, LaMa. It sounded like hell to me too, but hopefully will be ok. It's the working out the bill & how you go about that which freaks me out the most-14 people!
We have just checked in & our room is actually a suite! It's in the old-fashioned part of the casino & there is no perceivable fragrance smell. Yay!!! It suits us just fine. It's very convenient & parking is free. They won't get any money of ours in their machines.
We caught up with R on the way & just had some sushi with him. G is doing the crossword first & we're about to go over to the casino to have a drink.

I usually count along while ordering and make sure I have enough/flexible cash to just throw it+tips on the pile. Leave the headaches to people who enjoy them.

I think 6 is an ideal number to go out for dinner . It’s impossible to talk with everyone unless you change seats after a course .
We normally split the bill equally but we don’t normally go too much . Last night there was 8 of us I never really chatted to 2 of them . Everyone had same menu so cost was same all around and it was BYO wine so no extra costs . I just had some water .
Your weekend really sounds good though, Cate . Hope you have super fun time

Wow, really happy to hear the accommodations worked out. I usually have trouble if the hotel isn't super expensive with cleaning product smells, so I appreciate (on a smaller scale reaction) what you have to contend with. I hope for the dinner you can just sit next to the person who invited you in the first place and get to talk with them for the most part!

With the ritual of sitting down with G and having wine, it could become more about the ritual and less about the substance in your glass. It's so nice to have rituals together! We all sit around having my fattening cacao smoothie and making mmmmm sounds together when we drink!

Santorini looks incredible. You are going to have so much fun!!!!

Hello, my lovely forum friends. We haven't been home long & we had an absolute ball! I am quite exhausted.
Our dinner went surprisingly well. There ended up being 15 of us! When we got to the restaurant the 9 extras were already seated, so we got to sit with the other 2 couples that we are becoming quite close to. We had a fantastic meal, which was really good as it had been our choice. The other 9 had worked out their contribution to the bill & then A (not me :) ) sorted out the rest & it worked out well. We were staying at the casino, as were A & M1. The other couple (well her, anyway) looked disappointed that we were parting ways, so I suggested they come back with us & they did.
Well. To cut a long story & a long night, short, we danced & laughed & chatted & drank bubbly & danced some more & laughed lots more etc. It was SO much fun! M2 & I got on like a house on fire & got to know one another. I danced like no-one was watching :D Truth is, I danced & just about everyone was watching. I just love dancing. To Helen Reddy's "I am woman". I really did all the moves. On my own.....on the dance floor....all by myself. I wore them out.
Yesterday I played 18 holes of golf, feeling slightly under the weather & played better than I have for quite a while. I wouldn't recommend drinking lots of bubbly & dancing for hours as preparation for a game of golf at a new course or as a regular thing, but I don't regret the night at all.
We caught up with our son, R, each day. We had a quiet dinner with A & M last night & called in at R's work & drove him home. This morning we had breakfast with him before driving home. We really packed in a lot in that one weekend & will be a little more careful next time, but I'm glad that it all went the way it did.
On the way home, we picked up a whole venison & 10kg of venison mince. It was good to see exactly where it comes from. We met the guy who raises the deer (we thought it was wild deer, but he farms it himself & it is introduced) & butchers it himself. He has a great setup. His wife said she had participated in a park run yesterday & I said a friend of mine does that. It turns out their daughter & my friend's son are married. It is a very small world, but especially here in Tasmania.
Enough for now. My lovely husband has just cooked us up a rare Venison steak. How fresh? :D

Wow, I'm so happy you had such a great time!! I loved the part about dancing and drinking champagne all night not being the best preparation for golfing the next morning! I didn't know you were such a party animal!! And you made a new close friend! Wow, that sounds like some weekend!!!
