Cate's Diary

Cate, can I ask you to clarify about the fasting? I'm just curious about it. :)

Cate, can I ask you to clarify about the fasting? I'm just curious about it. :)
Hi, kakes. Since August last year, I have been doing the "Fast Diet" or 5:2 as it is known. For 5 days a week, I eat to my TDEE(loosely) & then 2 days of the week I only eat up to 500 cals. I don't ever have those 2 days consecutively. The link to the site is https://thefastdiet.co.uk/ I don't like to put links on the forum, but there is so much info there & it would be easier to follow than me trying to explain it all. I was having 2 small meals, but lately, I have been waiting until 5pm to eat anything & have found that easier. Once I have something small to eat I just want to keep eating!
I have lost 7kg since starting it & am not strict on non-fasting days. I don't pig out, but I don't count my calories either. Not everyone could do it, but I don't find it super hard anymore & I like that I don't feel I am on a diet all of the time. I am now down to the weight I thought I would be happy at, but have decided to continue on doing it & drop a further 5kgs to get down to my lowest adult, healthy weight.
I can feel the benefits of having a smaller waist too & that is one of the best things about it. If you have a good look at the web-site it was designed for a longer, healthier life & weight-loss is just a bonus. It's not for everyone & certainly not for diabetics. I do get very tired on fast days so don't over-do anything on those days. I have not done 2 fast days every single week.

Well, today is the 1st of May & I have not come up with a new plan. I had better do that, right now...................
Got to go. Just got a visitor.

I have had a lovely few days as R, our younger son has been home. It was absolute quality time. I just dropped him off in town & he was getting a lift back to Hobart with a friend of ours. He seems to be on an even keel at the moment.
Our power went out yesterday at 2.30 & did not get re-connected until about 11pm. We sat around talking for hours, by candlelight, but went to bed about 9.30!
Squats 52, before my shower this morning.

Great news about your son and the lovely time you got to spend together. I think all families would benefit from power cuts from time to time :)

Power restrictions would get most people back to being early risers :p Glad to hear r is doing well and you all had a good time :)

Thanks Delsid & LaMa. We did have a lovely time. I just got a message from him saying that he had a lovely time at home & thanked us for having him. That second part made me feel just a little bit sad.
It is so wild- windy & raining heavily. We just got home from the GC committee meeting- only 5 to go :D. It wasn't too bad, but it's never good.
I don't think there will be much golf this week!

We lost power pretty frequently at my house as a kid. There was something really peaceful and calming about sitting with my family by the light of a kerosene lamp without any other distractions.

It was nice Cory.
It was a very wild, windy night, with huge gusts of wind & almost constant rain. It still is raining. G & I will go out to the golf club, but I seriously doubt they will play. :D
Have eaten gluten in the last 24 hours obviously & have a terrible stomach ache/bloating etc. G had bought some "gourmet" sausages & obviously didn't ask if they were GF. (Gourmet & sausages should not even be in the same sentence!) Had nightmares all night & woke many times. So did he(wake that is).

Fasting today. Did an extra 18 squats yesterday to bring them up to 70, Have done 32 today so far.

You have done so well Cate. Makin' goals, doing your best, making fitness goals and sticking to them.....

Well Done! :hug2::applause:

Well-made sausages are a thing of beauty - but since it´s mostly about the seasonings they might as well make them out of veg. Hope you´re feeling better by now...

Thanks Stacy & LaMa. I am feeling better this afternoon, but am looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast!

Still had a guts ache when I woke up this morning & also weighed an extra kilo, even after a fast day, which I will put down to inflammation/fluid retention. I had decided not to go to golf as it has been wild, wet, cold & windy. It is now fine, but too late to go. I am one who needs to plan the night before. I just couldn't rush this morning. I am also sniffling & sneezing my head off. I'll have to extract a digit & ride my bike today or I will feel slothful & guilty about not going.
There is snow up on the mountains!
I will have to push myself over Winter to keep moving. It is way too easy to become lethargic when the weather turns cold. The fire & a book beckon, but I know that I need to exercise even more to keep my mood elevated.
Has everyone read this article- http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/health/biggest-loser-weight-loss.html?_r=2
It is very interesting research, even if a little disheartening. I know I have to really battle to keep my weight off.

Oh dear, Cate. I hope you feel better soon and that those sniffles go away too!

What activity do you tend to do in winter? Are there good places for walks/cycling near where you live?

Thanks for posting this article, I'll give it a read. It really IS a battle...at least we can support each other in it :)

I´ve read similar stories before so it doesn´t surprise me, but somehow they´re only ever about people who lose weight extremely quickly. I wonder if the same principle holds for people who lose weight at a healthy pace.

:grouphug: Fell Better!

Yes, I read article and watched interview.

I have never missed a season. I wish they would go back to how they did it the first few seasons...There was MORE shown and more information re: fitness/how to change eating habits/what to eat.

It has become too much of a "show" now.

I have a huge CRUSH on Dolvett ... :smilielol5::svengo:

I always keep in mind the "reality" of the Biggest Loser Experience... We could all reach our goal weight in no time if we could go to a ranch with no distractions, have nothing to do but care for yourself and have personal trainers aid you in every way.

No wonder so many gain it all back plus extra once their body is in shock of returning to a desk job/house full of kids/demanding job or long hours and so on. Plus, just the world we live in with all the tempting technology and tv/movies that just slow us down.

I always tell hubby I wish we could be adopted into the Amish community and lifestyle. :);)

They are pretty darn smart!

OR, create a Pioneer Days Community. (Like the movie: The Village) :D

My weight would melt off quickly with all that farming, washing clothes in the river and not having access to JUNK!

Sorry Cate...Didn't mean to ramble on in your journal.

Hi Delsid. I think I just have the snuffles & sneezes & maybe it was a reaction to the gluten I ate on Monday as I have had a very upset stomach too. It's getting better thank you. I ride my exercise bike in Winter. I think I need to invest in a really good raincoat & make myself go for walks, even if it's raining. I do find it much harder to motivate myself in Winter xo
Hi butterfly & thank you. The article is a little disheartening in one way, but good in another. I lost my weight quickly (36kg or almost 80lbs in 28 weeks) so I can see that my struggle with not regaining my weight is similar to the people in the article. On the other hand, I am currently only 5kg more than my lowest weight so, even though it has been a constant struggle I am still doing quite well. I think it is much better to lose weight slowly. I hope there is a set point where I will be able to maintain without so much vigilance, but, if there is not, I will never give up.
Hi LaMa. I think that losing weight slowly would be quite a different story. What's done is done for me, but I think losing slowly is best.
Hi Stacy. You made me laugh! I have never watched The Biggest Loser & won't. I would almost give up TV if G didn't put it on. I think we have lost the plot really with our lifestyles & priorities. I don't want to go back to slaving over boiling water to wash my clothes, but I think a bit more simple living & eating would solve a lot of our problems. No eating processed food would be one of the best moves we could make.

1kg up, no squats yet today (still in PJ's); no golf this week( 10km on bike needs to be ridden); 1 fast day only so far(1 more needed)....Cate, kicks herself up the bum & gets moving......

I just bought anise seed, for the first time in my whole adult life. HOW DO I USE IT??? Lol, I bought it to go with a specific pork belly recipe for my instant pot and now I have a whole oz of it to use up.

I'm catching up on your goings on. Its going to take me a reeeeeeaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyy long time.

Ok, I just read that entire article and it is LONG. For those who don't have the time or patience to read the entire thing, allow me to sum it up because it is fascinating and I feel that it's a message that needs to be delivered to everyone on this forum.

Researchers followed contestants from Season 8 of The Biggest Loser for six years, starting while they were on the show and ending six years after the show had ended. They tracked each person's weight (obviously) and monitored other biological data including metabolism and levels of leptin.

During the study, 13 of the 14 subjects who had lost a large amount of weight on The Biggest Loser ended up gaining back weight, four of which ended up even heavier than before the show started. Only one subject didn't regain their weight. As researchers pieced together the data looking for the answer to "WHY did the subjects regain so much weight?" they discovered something truly disheartening (as Cate said).

After the subjects lost a ton of weight their metabolism significantly slowed. In layman's terms - their bodies stopped burning calories at a normal rate which made it nearly impossible to maintain their smaller weight. In some instances, subjects were burning HUNDREDS (600-900) of calories LESS than normal for a person their size, even when resting. Simply put, their own bodies were fighting against them. Basically, most of what the subjects were eating ended up turning into fat through no fault of their own.

On top of that, researchers found that the levels of leptin in the subjects (a hormone that controls hunger) dropped to near-zero after they had lost a large amount of weight, meaning they were ALWAYS hungry. With low (or even non-existent) levels of leptin, a person is going to constantly feel hungry and constantly want to eat. Pair that with a dangerously low metabolism and you have a near-impossible fight to win against biology if you want to maintain a healthy weight.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
