Cate's Diary

Oh, your asthma attack sounds awful. My younger sister had it very bad when she was little, she had to have a nebuliser (sp?) every so often and was awful with perfumes, etc. Also echoing the above, an aneurysm?! When?

Have missed you, lovely lady. You are such a calming, constant presence here. We are lucky to have you.

Hi Kate & Han. Yes, apparently I have an Aneurysm. It's just a word, albeit slightly scary sounding. I was playing golf last year sometime (I really don't remember when) & felt short of breath & tight in the chest. It felt different to Asthma & I went to the doctor, who did not seem concerned but I asked for a referral to a cardiologist. To cut a long story short I found out I have an enlarged ascending aorta. The ascending aorta is the main artery that goes up through the middle of your heart. It's meant to be about 2.5cm in diameter & mine was 3.9cm. The cardio suggested I really cut down on salt to try to get my BP down, which I did. He seemed really happy with what I did & with my diet, golf etc & I came away not so worried. He didn't say the word Aneurysm. The blood bank would not take my blood when I told them I had seen a cardio, asked for a clearance, which apparently must have mentioned the A word & they have said no to me giving blood again. I was really disappointed but have accepted their decision.

I can see why he did not mention the A word to me. It sounds awful. Apparently 4 times more women die from heart disease than die of breast cancer, but you just don't hear about it as much. I'm doing what I can to be as healthy as I can & that's all you can do.

Thank you to the 2 of you for being so sweet & kind. I plan on sticking around for a lot longer!
Lots of love, xoxo Cate

The forum is so active at the moment & I almost forgot to update my diary!
I played golf yesterday in a 4 person Ambrose with G & 2 others. We won the event, but I can't take much credit for it. I wasn't feeling great (very short of breath still). I enjoyed the day though. It's great to get out there & play 18 holes of golf & Ambroses are good because you get to play every shot, instead of alternating shots, like in Foursomes. The rest of our team, comprised a short handicapped big hitter & a 14 year old up & coming really good golfer. They were good company & good to watch. I chipped really well & chipped in off the green to give us a birdie on one hole. We had 8 birdie's & 10 pars.

I am back counting calories again as I think I need the discipline. I am inclined to eat less if I'm logging food as it makes me think twice about it. I had gained .5kg in 6 weeks of not logging.

I think we might start planning our next trip. Turkey & Greece seem to be the firm favourites.
We have enough money to either-
have a good holiday or
buy a car or
help our sons out again.
The holiday would do us more good & I don't know how many more we will be able to have, but...
a second car, especially a ute, would be more practical, but...
helping our sons out again would probably get them both out of debt, but.....
probably teach them nothing about being better with their money.
Also if we get sick & the waiting list on public health is too long, then having some back-up would give us the option of paying instead of waiting.
Being practical is just a bit boring.
Just thinking out loud really.
I had better do something, instead of sitting here jibbering away!
Cheers, Cate
We'll just sit on it for a while.

Could you get the car and go for a road trip holiday within Aus? That way you get to tick both possibilities off the list! If there's any money left after that, you could help your sons out a bit.

Ohhh calorie counting :( such a boring task. What's your main food downfall, Cate? I just find calorie counting so time consuming, and sometimes confusing (although that's probably just me being a bit thick), so i'm trying to just make better choices. I know my biggest food offender is sugar and snacking, so cutting out as much of the white stuff as possible, and upping portions at main meals to stop snacking. I was eating child sized portions at meals, but eating like 6 meals a day because it was never enough to tide me over! I agree that documenting food on here helps a lot!

Hope you manage to decide what to do with your savings!

Hi Han & Lara, the reason I have been thinking about it a lot lately is because for the last month I have been thinking "this time 2 years ago, we were in .........." - insert various parts of Italy, Switzerland & France. This very day 2 years ago we celebrated my 60th birthday in Paris, at the end of a lovely month travelling from Rome to Paris.
Yes, today is my 62nd birthday. :D Once upon a time I would have thought 62 was ancient. Now I know it's not. Birthdays are a funny day. I like them to be remembered by G & our sons, but don't like a big fuss to made of me. I have never liked being the focus of everyone's attention, but love feeling loved by my family.

We are going for a mystery tour & will have lunch somewhere. I may buy myself something along the way, I may not. I used to buy myself something for G to give me, now I don't bother really. If I need something or want something I get it & I don't need something on the day. Sure, it would be nice if one day he surprised me with something, but having such a lovely husband ie enough for me.

Sending you all lots of love, xoxo Cate.

Happy belated birthday Cate!

You've worked hard to make that number less important. Your improvements to your health are inspiring. I hope you had just the right amount of fuss for your birthday.

Thank you Bug, Lara, Han & Q. I had just the right amount of fuss :D & I had a lovely day. The weather was perfect & we drove around the mountains, stopped at look-outs, had some small walks etc. G managed to surprise me by taking me to a little restaurant, that I didn't even know about, in a pretty little town called Forth & when we got there our OS, D was there! It is entirely gluten-free! :D G played a few little games along the way like calling in at D's work to find him not there. I then sent D a text to say we had called in & he wasn't there, which gave him a good laugh apparently.
I really enjoyed my day. Our younger son, R called & he sounded chirpy after a day spent bush-walking with my favourite of his friends. I got lots of texts & messages on FB & felt really loved & special.

Lots of love to all, xoxo Cate

Man that sounds like no fun at the dentist! Hope they have that deodorizer removed by the next time you go in!!

I agree! Take a holiday!!
Happy birthday!

Hi Han & Lara & anyone else reading my diary, I keep forgetting to actually input my calories into MFP! Seriously! I have been eating much more strictly, as if I'm counting them, but just haven't been logging on or even thinking to. I also rode my stationary bike yesterday and will again today. I know I need to get back into a routine again. I feel so much better when I am keeping track. My brain so needs structure & limits. I'll go log in now & update yesterday. I might have to set MFP as my default again so that I can't forget.
It's a lovely day again today. We're having chilly nights (down to 0oC) but lovely sunny days (15-16oC) :D
Bye for now, xo Cate

Happy belated birthday, Cate! Sorry I missed it. Been so busy.

It's great to see you watching your calories and getting back into the exercise routine. You've had some trying times, but sometimes (for me anyway) the exercise can have a calming effect as you just sort of zone out and forget about things for a few minutes.

Happy birthday again!!!
