Cate's Diary

... It was really hot here yesterday, but not as hot as Hobart which had it's highest recorded temp 40.8(?) ...
a warm New Year's Eve... i could use one of those right now... it's freezing (to me) here...!

SD weather.jpg

Flyer, that must be awful, 50 F! Last night it was -35.7 F (-37.6 C), just a ways up the road from us at Peter Sinks (Peter Sinks - Utah Climate Center ), one of the coldest places in the lower 48. Here in town its just 10 F (-12 C). We need to find a way to do some temperature averaging with Australia!

Cate, stay cool as best you can.

yeah, yeah, yeah... it's all relative... lol.

unfortunately my head feels like it's cooking.
it's a bit more like chills from this cold i've come down with.

plus, my place has no central heat or a/c ... San Diego builders usually ignore those things with structures in the coastline climate zone (west of I-5) of 72°F practically year round. i have all three of my roll-around oil filled heaters cooking right now... plus a pot of broth on the stove. i have a feeling i'm going to give up intermittent fasting for a day or two. i might throw a bit of pasta in the broth in a few hours. been drinking liquids all night.

been watching New Year's Day travel around the world for a while... When Year 2020 Starts Around the World

Happy 2020 you upside-downers... !!

Cate hope you are feeling better . You are already in the new year now hope it’s good .
you all need to come to Ireland for the average weather . We are at about 10c today . Bit mild really for this time of the year . It can vary greatly . But never too hot or too cold except for our odd blips .
Keep cool and look after yourself Cate .

The first entry in my diary for 2020.
It has cooled down a lot after the storm night before last & we slept with a cotton blanket again last night. There has only been one night where it was a sheet only night. We don't need or have air-con. I am so glad we live in Tasmania. Really hot weather is not the norm. This morning it's about 13oC & is only getting to 21. Perfect for me.
There is smoke on the horizon again today after a clear day yesterday. The fires are not nearby.
I feel much better, today, thanks Petal.
Yesterday-
BF-Yoghurt, berries, almond meal 272
Lunch- Soup, Ryvitas & cheese 395
Watermelon, raw carrot 68
1/2 bottle of a very good Shiraz 232
Dinner- Grilled salmon, lots of veggies 424
1 Weis mango & macadamia bar 111
1 Lochanora Scotch whisky liqueur, just before midnight 212
Total: 1714. Made an exception for NYE
Steps only 3984 (wasn't up for anything more)
Slept like a log.

Happy & Healthy New Year everyone!

Thanks, Liza. I got better as the afternoon went on. I have a lot of environmental sensitivities but manage quite well as we have a fragrance-free home in the bush, well away from anyone else. I make sure that I limit my exposure. I'm not going back into this supermarket again, even though it's our local one.
Glad the day got better for you. Good that you can limit your exposure normally. You sure hear of more and more people suffering from that sort of thing. At least the awareness seems to be growing a bit and people seem more willing to stop using scented products and stuff that might trigger people. Too bad you have to avoid your local supermarket though!

Happy New Year to you as well Cate!

Sounds like a good move. I hope you're having a calm, quiet first day of the year, as I am. :)

Adding later: How long have I been away from this machine? There's two whole posts since I wrote that last bit! I love the sound of your NYE, with moderate but definitely celebratory shiraz and whisky liqueur! :D
(Very glad there's no fire near you - every morning I obsessively check the various maps. I hate this time of year, and every year it's worse.)

Thank you, Liza. Some people are more willing to use less scent, but most don't get it.
Hi, Amy. I know. The fires are horrendous. More lives lost today I think. Someone I know is waiting for her son & husband, who are both volunteer firefighters to go & check to see if their house was lost & their 2 ponies. She got out with very little time to spare & very little stuff. It's very frightening & truly awful.

I should have said she's not someone close to me, but it becomes much more real when someone you know is affected. Thanks for the hug though LaMa xo

There is just soo many people affected all across the country, I see on the news tonight they are moving navy ships into position to help with evacuations and medical

Ah Cate that is terrible . We know people here who have people over there who have been affected and they are very worried . The news is frightening and I hope your friends are going to be ok .
also hoping weather cools for you a bit now

Hi, Petal & Jack. We are very fortunate so far in Tasmania, compared to the rest of Australia & it is much cooler at the moment. Tru is much more affected by the fires as she comes from an area that has been devastated & has had fires near her already this year.
My friend heard that her house was still standing & was allowed to go back in & retrieve some more stuff before being told to get out quickly. I haven't heard any more this morning. As I said she's not a close friend. I'm friends with her through her writing, as is my sister. She often comments on my stuff & sends me birthday wishes & I feel I have got to know her as well as I know some of you.

Yesterday- (I find doing this a bit tedious, but will continue for Jan)
BF- 1 slice sourdough oat toast, 1/4 avocado, 2 eggs 394
L- Turkey & veg soup, 1 boiled egg, 1 small peach 254
2 sugar-free lemonades 5
D- Chorizo & veg 389
8 cherries, 1/2 baked apple with a scoop of ice-cream 219
a spoonful of Greek yoghurt, 2 hot lemon drinks 68
Total 1329
Steps 5460 (3.81km)

G & I are about to get a load of wood & deliver it to our GS, A. We "sell" it to him usually but this load is half his Xmas present.
I made some seed crackers yesterday while G was at golf & they were very successful. I had made them before & they were soft. I thought I would try again as I find GF crackers either boring or over salty or like fresh air. These are just perfect! I'll put the recipe here somewhere soon as they are keto. The trick is to let them cool in the oven. Last time G started cooking something else in the oven at the same time. Our son, D thought my 1st attempt was hilarious so I sent him a video with me cracking them apart, making a very nice snapping sound. That made him laugh.

Yes - I would think there's hardly a person who is not double-checking maps every morning. I mean the CFS maps of incidents etc. Several are linked from the ABC website.

Well done on the cracker triumph, Cate! I'll be looking interestedly for the recipe. :)

Very true, Amy.
I was really pleased with my cracker effort. I rarely cook anything and usually give up after a failure. I'm glad I persevered.
Here's the recipe-
Keto seed crackers
Ingredients

  • 1⁄3 cup almond flour
  • 1⁄3 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 1⁄3 cup unsalted pumpkin seeds
  • 1⁄3 cup flax seed or chia seeds
  • 1⁄3 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp ground psyllium husk powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil
  • 1 cup boiling water
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Add boiling water and oil. Mix together with a wooden fork (or spoon)
  3. Keep working the dough until it forms a ball and has a gel-like consistency.
  4. Place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Add another paper on top and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough evenly. (I just used the wooden spoon to spread the dough out fairly evenly)
  5. Remove the upper paper(if used) and bake on the lower rack for about 40-45 minutes, check occasionally. Seeds are heat sensitive so pay close attention towards the end. (I added an extra 30 mins).
  6. Turn off the oven and leave the crackers to dry in the oven. Once dried and cool, break into pieces.
If you don't have all sorts of seeds at hand, don't worry! As long as the total amount of seed used is the same as in the recipe you can use more of one sort and less of the other.
Storing
In order to maintain the crispiness of these crackers, you must store them in an airtight container. Also, make sure they are completely dried and cooled before storing.

I haven't worked out the calories yet.
