Cate's Diary

It's expensive in the shops, but we have a contact who gets it direct & we pay $80 Aust for a whole deer & then only $5 a kilo for extra mince(ground).
It's a great arrangement!
It's sunny today so G & I will get some outside work done. We have some Spinach & Kale seedlings to plant out & some wood to load up. Our older son(D) is going down to Hobart for the weekend to play in an 8-ball tournament & is staying with our younger son(R). He's taking our ute with a load of wood for R. They are both competing in a big money comp.

Thats about $63.00 us so thats a good deal.
Do you know what kind of deer yall have there?
What exactly is a ute?

Hi, Rebel. They are Fallow deer (Dama dama). The population is on the increase & we have a deer population of about 20,000 & rising at an alarming rate. Crazily they are protected so that they can be hunted, but that hunting is very restricted & landowners can't really control them on their own land, even though they are an introduced pest. There's an interesting article here- https://theconversation.com/oh-deer-a-tricky-conservation-problem-for-tasmania-43702
A ute is a utility, but I think you would call it a pickup or a truck. Ours is only a 2 wheel drive & looks a bit like this-

Ohhhhh ok .......
We have fallow here. They aren't real common though. In all my years of hunting i have come across maybe 2. They are considered exotic so they arent really regulated in most areas. Kinda a shoot at will critter much like the wild hogs. Our deer is the white tail....quite tasty.
Yup.... Thats a truck......

Rebel- this is what we call a truck. If you call utes, trucks, what do you call a truck like this? A big truck? Language differences are fascinating, but also very confusing :)

The feral fallow deer here look like this-

Thanks, LaMa. I hope they have an enjoyable weekend & get through it relatively unscathed! The potential for much craziness is always there when they get together.

That would be a semi or a tractor trailer. A tractor or a bobtail if its not hooked to a trailer.
Yup the deer is the same here. They just arent real common. Probably a few got off a boat from europe and started breeding in the wild. Alot like our wild hogs i suppose.

:D What else are siblings for?
Very true, LaMa. :D
Rebel- this gets even more confusing. Here a trailer is something that a car would tow & a tractor is a farm vehicle. The deer were introduced deliberately, back in the 1800's specifically for hunters. Crazy world!

G & I are off to do some work out at the golf club again. I'm going to finish a job I started last Friday. Much digging will be happening. My muscles are about to be put into play.

I am feeling good this morning. The sun is shining, the sky is blue. My body seems to have found its' equilibrium & I am doing a <500 cal fast. I have a big very low-cal soup made up & have had a bowl already. The whole thing would be lucky to have 100 cals & I have a Venison shepherds' pie plated up ready for dinner(with a pumpkin top). I decided not to wait until 2 pm to eat anything. My body is used to having breakfast. It doesn't seem right not to. I feel up to doing this today & my body will love it.
G is playing golf & I am going out to collect the venison, do some shopping & go to the library. I will spend a quiet day at home this afternoon reading & also go for a walk. If the venison is not frozen I may go for a walk in town.

:grouphug: I love how positive that sounds.
Thanks, hon. I have felt really positive today.
Sounds really good
The shepherds' pie? It was scrumptious. That husband of mine is one very good cook. I was ravenous, but made myself eat it very slowly;y. I'm looking forward to breakfast.......maybe that will be Venison fry & bacon on toast as I think I saw some in amongst the fresh meat. I am hungry still but can wait until tomorrow. I just mentioned that to G & he said "yeah, sure." I'm spoiled!
I haven't had shepherd's pie in ages. Yummy.
It sure was!

I had a really nice day. I was driving past the nursing home & flipped on my indicator & went in & visited a couple of the olds. I really enjoyed it. It has been a year since my Mum died & it has taken me this long to feel strong enough. It was lovely.
R rang me & he sounded good.
D is still in the comp & is about to play again.
I did some very healthy shopping.
I did a successful 500 cal "fast" without too much trouble. It helps to have a very low cal soup made.
I read a book. It was not worth reading.
I did not go for a walk. Whoops!
G came home from golf looking a little bit despondent & I got out of him that the ex-co-captain snubbed him. I'm glad I didn't play.
I will make sure I go for a walk tomorrow.

It's hard to explain, but the comp our sons are playing in this weekend is a really big one (by our standards). R is now out of it, but D continues to keep winning against incredible competitors & under lots of pressure. On Friday night the unseeded players played off & the winners stayed on the winners' side of the draw & the losers dropped down to the losers' side of the draw. D won his game Friday night 8/3(against a Tas state player). He lost his next match 3/8 against a SA player who has also represented Australia & then got dropped down to the losers side. He then won his next 2 games 8/2 & 8/5(against a Tas ex-state player & a current Australian masters champion).Late last night he was playing an interstate player & was up 7/5 when his opponent played a serious foul, which is a loss of frame. D called it as a loss of frame & therefore winning the match & went to shake the hand of his opponent. He abused D heatedly & tried bullying him into continuing the game. D called the adjudicator who asked D what happened. D said "T can tell you himself." (Smart man). When T said what happened the adjudicator said " Loss of frame". There was no other option of course. This guy has a history of bullying everyone & D has a really good reputation for fairness. He also stands up to anyone & everyone & he always does what's right. Apparently, almost everyone there came up to him afterwards & supported him.
D is currently playing & was 2/0 up last we heard. It's very frustrating though as the live stream cameras aren't on yet. Poor G is getting very antsy!

R won his first match against a Tas state player 8/2 on Friday night & then lost 7/8 to an all Australian team captain(R was in that Aus team). In the losers draw he then lost his next match 7/8 (against a Tas state player) to be out of the comp. He rang me during the day & sounded quite chirpy. Apparently, he ended up fairly drunk & we got a very late message saying he didn't enjoy the toxic atmosphere. I just messaged him & asked if he's ok & he says he is. He has hardly played competition 8-ball for the last few years & the guys he was playing are serious 8-ball fanatics.
The live streaming has started & we can see D playing but not the score. He's playing very well!

They are LaMa. As a parent, you can't get a better compliment. Thank you, hon!
He offered to play the guy he had the "dispute" with a race to 8 for $100, but he declined. D is a strong person with a funny sense of humour. He doesn't see playing someone for money as a gamble as he sees it as backing his ability. He's not a smart arse either.
D lost his comp match 8/4, but has stayed to support the only Tasmanian left in the field. The standard of play is very high. We went & fed & watered his chooks & nicked his eggs. :)
Had a nice day, but not enough exercise!

I honestly don't know what I thought 8-ball was all the time, I think I imagined some version of road bowling, but it's pool, correct? Can you play yourself Cate?
