Cantona's Calorie Cutout Countdown Continuum (updated weekly)

I'm 22. My goal is to become the ideal weight of around 12 stone. My current weight is 19 stone 7lbs.

I started eating healthily about a month ago, I heard in various mediums that a gradual change is better than completely cutting food out. And now I don't ever crave the crisps and chocolate that I haven't eaten for months. I've also completely cut out alcohol to drink, although I do use wine in cooking.

When I first started out I didn't weigh myself. I just wanted to get on with it and perhaps get a nice surprise after a few weeks. When I did get on the scales I had nothing to compare to, so didn't feel great. When I first weighed myself on October 24th 2009 I weighed 20 stone 7lbs.

Two weeks later I had lost a stone, but I seem to have stalled all this week and not even lost 1lbs, which is annoying.

My basic regime is to go for an hours walk 3 times a day. I'm currently unemployed, so have the time to do this. But when I do finally get a job, I will try and go to the gym everyday after work.

I start the day at 7:10. Don't ask me why I chose this time. I like to go for walks when people aren't about. Although two of the walks are in the middle of the day, people tend to be at work.

When I first started out, I would eat the cereal: Fruit and Fibre for breakfast. But after watching a programme about cereals on TV, I looked at the side of the packet and to my horror it contained more fat, sugar, salt than other cereals that are sort of concieved to be "unhealthy". So I changed to porridge. Using quaker oats and some water with a chopped up banana. It's not the tastiest, certainly without the banana, but it's edible and I haven't got bored after a couple of weeks.

So after breakfast I go for my second walk around 11am.

For lunch I have started making butternut squash soup. This is basically an onion and a garlic clove softened in some olive oil then a whole butternut squash added with vegetable stock of the same volume. Then simmer for 25 mins. Depending on the size of your squash and the amount of stock, you can get 4 to 6 meals out of it.

After lunch I go for my third walk of the day. I find that listening to podcasts and audiobooks on my ipod is much better than music, as it keeps you entertained (especially as I walk along the same route every time).

For dinner I have something homecooked. Although I still live at home with my family, I do most of the cooking. I have found it to become a real passion. So I have started making everything from scratch, so I know what is going in my food. And you can surprise yourself with how nice it tastes compared to ready made stuff.

The only drinks I have are water. I completely stopped drinking alcohol. The water isn't really a concious effort, as it was all I drank before anyway. I don't really like tea or coffee, so I never had to cut these out.

For snacks I have an apple, banana, grapes, oranges, pineapple (or any fruit) depending on mood.

Because I lost a stone in two weeks, I have decided that this is working, but as I said it stalled.

I'll update this every few days, because apart from the evening meal, not much changes. Haha.

So here we go. Starting at: 19 stones 7lbs.

So it's been one week on.

For some reason I don't bother going for walks at weekends, I'm not sure if it's motivation or what. I'm not sure it is motivation, as I got for 15 during the week! I still go for the early one on Saturday but do other stuff in the day and on Sunday I have a lie in (perhaps I feel I deserve it.

Anyway, I've been ill since yesterday so I haven't been for a walk since Tuesday. I still feel a bit shit, so perhaps won't go tomorrow (Friday) and then back to my weekend lull. Oh dear.

Anyway, tale of the tape:

Current weight: 19 stones 5lbs, so a bit of weight loss.

Bit gutted about that because I weighed myself earlier in the week and was down to 19 stones 2lbs. Not exercising has made me go a bit backwards, but still doing alright compared to last week.

After last weeks fiasco, I finally got back on the walking wagon. Went for a walk on Sunday and Saturday morning, but that was it.

For Monday and Wednesday I only went on two walks, but Tuesday and Thursday I have been on 3. Tomorrow I will get to go on all 3 too hopefully.

It's odd, the weight loss appears to be going well, but I don't appear to look any different. On the plus side some old t-shirts are starting to fit, on the downside, my only two pairs of jeans are too big. Every cloud I guess.

Current weight: 19 stones exactly.

Next target: 18 stones 7 lbs.

Currently lost: 1 stone 7 lbs.

In the interest of making this even remotely amusing to read, I thought I'd start to list what I'm actually eating for main meal (breakfast and lunch has yet to change, apart from yesterday).

Friday: Coq au vin: chicken thighs in red wine, stock, carrots, onion and mushroom with a jacket potato
Saturday: Sirloin steak and chips (ENGLISM, for yanks read: fries) with a mushroom, onion and cream sauce.
Sunday: Roast pork, apple sauce, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, steamed carrots, brocolli and runner beans. With gravy.
Monday: Cottage pie: minced beef, red wine, stock, carrots, potato, paremsan cheese, onions.
Tuesday: Fish and chips with a pickled onion and some tartare sauce
Wednesday: Minted lamb and sausages with a stir fry: pepper, carrot, brocolli, red onion, mushroom, mangetout and rice.
Thursday (today): Spag Bol with garlic bread.

On Wednesday I went out for lunch and had a jacket potato with salad and sweet and sour chicken.

Whilst this doesn't look like the best diet, IT IS WORKING. All my main meals are proper homecooked fresh stuff, perhaps this helps.

Didn't go for the usual 3 walks on Monday and Wednesday. Monday I had a driving lesson and on Wednesday I went shopping (so was still walking around).

I'm editing this section
Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 18 stones 10lbs

Next target: 18 stones 7lbs

Weight lost: 1 stone 11 lbs

So I think I'm making progress. Didn't go for ANY walks at all over the weekend, and then when I went for my first walk on Monday I felt so stiff and my leg felt a bit dead after a while. Certainly showed me that I need to continue the exercise.

Monday I went for two walks and then a driving lesson in the afternoon.
Tuesday I went for two walks and then went to see my nephew in his nativity play in the afternoon.
Wednesday I, again, went for two walks in the morning and then went shopping with my mum in the afternoon. So the afternoon got me a bit of exercise.
Today, Thursday, I managed to go for 3 walks for the first time since last Friday.

Still I have lost a bit of weight, which I'll come to, so alls well. I dread the week when I don't lose weight.
EDIT: I've just realised that I've lost 5lbs this week. Amazing.

This weeks evening meal menu:
Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast Lamb, roast and steamed veg
Monday: Shepherds pie
Tuesday: Chicken stuffed with camembert wrapped in parma ham
Wednesday: Gammon and potato rosti
Thursday: Spag Bol with garlic bread

On Wednesday I had half a mince pie (naughty)

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 18 stones 5lbs

Next target: 18 stones 0lbs

Weight lost: 2 stones 2lbs

Nightmare week this week. Been was ill Monday to Wednesday, so no exercising, and the diet fell apart.

I didn't eat any bad stuff, I just missed out on breakfast because I couldn't face it.

Back in training today. One more week and then Christmas, dreading that. Worst part about this diet has been the lack of alcohol. I can live without the fatty foods to be honest, but while I'm not an alcoholic, I do enjoy a drink. So Christmas day I plan on getting SMASHED. 2 months without booze, I feel I deserve it.

However, the last time I fell off the wagon, I also gorged on certain foods, I put on a whole HALF STONE (7lbs) in one DAY. The problem with booze is that after a few too many, you require fatty foods. ANYWAY:

Dinner:
Friday: Spag Bol
Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast Chicken and veg
Monday: Chicken stir fry and rice
Tuesday: Sausage and mash potato with veg
Wednesday: Spag Bol
Thursday: Pork Chop with either cous cous or jacket potato

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 18 stones 2lbs

Next target: 18 stones 0lbs

Weight lost: 2 stones 5lbs

heya!

are you doing any calorie counting? it helps a lot and sometimes it can help you make some changes that are gonna be good for you in the long run. i suggest along with the exercise, to keep track of exactly how many calories goes in each of the meals and plan ahead!

x

To answer your question, I'm quite lazy, so haven't bothered calorie counting. Just because what I'm doing seems to work, so haven't bothered doing anything like that/

As it's the Christmas week I've had a couple of chocolates and sausage rolls, nothing overly excessive, but it probably hasn't helped.

EDIT: Exercise: I did all the usual walking, apart from Friday and Wednesday I went swimming in the afternoon instead. Made a really nice change.

Dinner:
Friday: Shepherd's pie
Saturday: Chinese Takeaway
Sunday: Roast Lamb and veg
Monday: Steak and chips
Tuesday: Fish and chips
Wednesday: Sausage and mash potato with veg
Thursday: Spag Bol
Friday: Roast beef, Christmas dinner

Tonight I'm going to have a few beers, as it's been 2 months since I last had a drink. I will also be drinking on Christmas day, then a week later on New Years' Day. I then plan on going without drink until March.

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 18 stones 0lbs

Next target: 17 stones 7lbs (My current target is for next week to not have gone backwards)

Weight lost: 2 stones 7lbs

If you are not too lazy to walk 3 hours a day, and you are not too lazy to come here and list what you have eaten in a day, then you are not too lazy to input the same information into a free online diet journal, like fitday.com, my-calorie-counter.com, etc. I think you would find it beneficial. Yes, you are doing well with your weight loss, but you might find you are missing out on some important nutrition.

As you continue to lose weight, and get closer to your final goal, I think you will find it a little harder. At lower weight you will burn less calories, and as you have less excess fat to lose, you will get hungrier. At least that's the way it's gone for me. So the margin between what you burn and what you eat gets less. This is where the calorie counting becomes more important.

I have never counted calories. Honestly, I'm pretty good at eye-balling and I usually avoid high calorie foods.

OP: You're doing wonderfully. Keep up the good work.

Although I missed last week (somewhat disproving your point haha), didn't do as much exercise over christmas, and ate alot of shit.

I think you probably will be right about losing weight at a lower weight. But still at 18 stones, there's about 8 stone left to lose, so it shouldn't be a problem for the mean time.

And I still look into looking the calories of what I eat, but a quick question, on these websites, can you put in all the food you make in a meal and then divide it by the number of people that ate this meal.

So for example, if I make shephard's pie, it'll have two carrots in, but I won't be eating two carrots, I'll be having 1/4 of one. You see? This is quite confusing to explain, but the last time I went on one of these sites, it just had generic stuff and was hard to fit to what I ate.

Anyway, as I said, it's not been brilliant for the diet. The snow hasn't helped with being able to leave the house.

ANYWAY:

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 17 stones 13lbs

Next target: 17 stones 7lbs

Weight lost: 2 stones 8lbs

So a 1lb lost in two weeks, is pretty crap, but next week should be a better improvement.

It seems like all I seem to do is come on here and use excuses about not doing everything I could and should be doing but the snow and icy weather has basically meant I can't go out and do the walks. It's just starting to disappear now, so I will start again tomorrow morning.

Although yesterday afternoon I did go swimming, so I have done something this week.

Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast pork and veg
Monday: Stir fry pork and noddles.
Tuesday: Woodcock and pheasent with roast veg
Wednesday: Sausage and mash with veg
Thursday: Chicken, cous cous and roasted veg.

Still been eating really well, which probably explains the weeks weight loss of 4 lbs. While some people might look at that and think exercise isn't important, I will ignore this and carry on as before.

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 17 stones 9lbs

Next target: 17 stones 7lbs

Weight lost: 2 stones 12lbs

Went the whole hog and joined a gym. Started on Saturday had a woman guide me round the machines and provide me with a work out plan. I nearly died. I mean bloody hell it was intense. But I guess it gets more results than gentle exercise.

The woman was quite fit, so I battled on in order to look good. But I was basically dying. The next day I was aching, but I guess that's all part of it (no pain, no gain). Monday I still felt tired. Partly because I didn't get to bed until late on Sunday, so only walked in the afternoon.

Due to busyness and other such reason, only managed to walk twice each day. But back to the gym tomorrow, more pain.

Main meals each day:

Friday: Spaghetti Bolognaise
Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast lamb and veg
Monday: Shepherd's pie
Tuesday: Chicken, stir fry, rice
Wednesday: Fish and chips
Thursday: Steak and ale pie, mash, veg

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 17 stones 7lbs

Next target: 17 stones 0lbs

Weight lost: 3 stones 0lbs

EDIT: To add to this a little bit, some t-shirts are fitting me that I haven't worn in 3 years, which is nice.

You're doing awesome! I'm just doing walking at the moment and lost 6.5lbs last week :) Walking rocks! Well done on joining a gym as well! xx

Thanks, looks like you're doing well too. Did you just start? I lost loads in the first couple of weeks. Maybe could have been 14lbs.

I did just write out loads of stuff on here, but for whatever reason I've lost it. Not fun.

Went to the gym again last Friday and swimming on Wednesday. The gym didn't hurt as much this week, must be getting used to it. So at the gym I basically do 30 minutes of cardio first and then work on muscles afterwards.

So I do 10 minutes on: treadmill, bike and skiing thing.

Then do 2 sets of 12 reps for: biceps, back, chest and shoulders.

Not a great deal of difference has been made, but it is only my second time.

One thing I did notice at the gym was that they have a set of scales there. Now whenever I got to the toilet at home, curiosity comes over me and I have to hop on to see what I'm doing. I'm mostly disappointed obviously, because I want to have lost a lbs everytime I step on. So anyway, at the gym they have a set of scales, I got on and found that these scales weigh me at half a stone lighter than the ones I use at home. Bit confused by that.

When I went for a walk yesterday I decided to jog for a bit. Mistake there because I jarred my knee. Seems to have got better already, but I probably won't be jogging again for a while.

I've also decided to cut down my daily walks. Basically I've decided to do two walks, but walk much faster. So now a walk that I used to do 3 months ago takes 45 minutes instead of an hour. I feel that two brisk walks is better than 3 normal paced walks.

Meals for the week:

Friday: Pork chop, baked potato, veg
Saturday: Chicken carbonara
Sunday: Roast Beef, veg
Monday: Sausage, mash, veg
Tuesday: Gammon, egg and chips
Wednesday: Lasagne and some garlic bread
Thursday (today): Chicken stir fry.

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 17 stones 3lbs

Next target: 17 stones 0lbs

Weight lost: 3 stones 4lbs

So a nice loss of 4lbs this week. Walking faster seems to be paying off.

I’m posting this on Tuesday instead of Thursday, due to me finally passing my driving test. So I’m going on a bit of a tour of England to see all my mates who are spread out back home from uni or at uni. This also means I can get to the gym more frequently.

Genuine question, is it a good idea to go to the gym every day? Or is it better to go every other day and let your body recover?

Anyway, went to the gym again on Friday and again today. Each time it's getting better and better and I always feel good after a workout. I used to think I was lazy, but I think it's just a lack of energy from eating shit food.

After finding the section on this website of before and after pictures (if you haven't been, go look it really is brilliant), it really does want to make you carry on. Even though I've lost about 50lbs, It really wants to make you reach your "final" goal. A lot of people seem to post their "during" pictures. But I really just want to see it against the old me (and it doesn't look nearly as impressive). I had a long look round that section and so many people have done so well. Everyone seems to get better looking as well, haha.

One problem that is becoming apparent is clothes. When I started the diet I used to wear XXXL (writing that makes me cringe) t-shirts. I now am down to XXL and XL in some cases. I've taken to buying cheap stuff of ebay, knowing (hopefully) that I'll have to get rid of them in a few months anyway. The couples of pairs of jeans I had when starting the diet, stopped fitting after a month or so. I haven't bought a new pair since.

I think I've lost 8 inches off my waist. Lost 9 inches off my chest at least. Like weighing myself, I didn't bother measuring myself, so I'm unsure 100% of what I started at. With this loss it shows that it's all working nicely. The problem is wanting fast results and becoming impatient. I know this will work though, I just can't wait.

I'm still unsure of what my actual motivation is to do this. Doesn't make me want to stop and shows that you don't need one thing to drive you on. Maybe it's loads of little things.

Just had a look at some of the old pictures of me on facebook and I can tell a difference I think. And at a 50lbs loss, you should be able to really. A couple of people have noticed, but only said "oh, have you lost a bit of weight?". I'd quite like people to go "fucking hell!", when they see me. Even more so people that never swear.

Friday: Fish and chips
Saturday: Sausage, mash and veg
Sunday: Roast lamb, veg
Monday: Shepherds pie
Tuesday: Chicken, cous cous and roasted veg

Wednesday I’m off to see my mate in Manchester, so it’ll be eating out as he can’t cook. Thursday I’m off to my sister in Swindon, who is a good cook. And Friday off to a mates in Northampton, who lives at home, so I assume his mum can cook. So the diet shouldn’t be a problem.

Also because I’ve joined a “chain” gym, I can go to any in the UK. Thankfully there is one in Manchester and Swindon, so I am going to sample the delights of these on my travels. Not giving in for the sake of this travelling.

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 16 stones 13lbs

Next target: 16 stones 7lbs

Weight lost: 3 stones 8lbs

So another loss of 4lbs this week. I think the gym is working just aswell as going on two walks a day. So I may stop the walking and become a gym freak.

Decided to try going to the gym all of the 5 week days everyday starting Monday. Then possibly just swimming on Saturday or maybe a complete break.

Met up with a mate on Wednesday (the day after I did my last diary) in Manchester. We went to the pub and I resisted the temptation to have a drink, was on water. Which lead him to ask why. I told him about my weightloss and he seemed impressed and said how he noticed over christmas, but didn't want to say anything.

Wednesday I had the usual stuff for breakfast and lunch, but for dinner went to the pub for food and I had fish and chips. Because I was reliably informed that it has a lot less calories than any other take away style food. Not sure how true it is, but meh. It had peas though! Thursday morning I had to leave early because my mate was off to work, so had two bananas for breakfast instead of the porridge. And for lunch I had a pork and cheese wrap for lunch instead of soup.

Friday I had porridge for breakfast, but for lunch had a ham and cheese sandwich. Back to normal on Saturday and thereafter.

Monday went to the gym in the morning (planning on going everyday), came home too late to make a batch of soup. Had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich instead. Made soup again on Tuesday.

Wednesday went for lunch with my mum had a chilli beef backed potato.

9 day gap between the last time I did this and now, so should see a decent weightloss.

FOOD, evening meal:

Wednesday: Fish, chips, peas
Thursday: Gammon, mash, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potato
Friday: Pork, jacket potato with cheese, carrots, broccoli, apple sauce.
Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast chicken and various veg.
Monday: Chicken stir fry, rice, sauce
Tuesday: Lamb steak, mash, veg, gravy
Wednesday: Spag Bol, garlic bread
Thursday: Fish and chips

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 16 stones 9lbs

Next target: 16 stones 7lbs

Weight lost: 3 stones 12lbs

Got some job interviews lined up this week, everything is ticking along nicely. Going to the gym once a day beats leaving the house every 2 hours to go for a walk.

looking good and well done hitting the gym, your fish and chips may not be the healthiest meal choice but it certainly wasn't the worst :) a lot depends on how the food was cooked.

Screw the five week days. I have become a gym addict. Been everyday since last Monday and don't intend to stop. Although today I got a new "plan" and this means I'll be working on more areas and hopefully will feel the benefit more.

Last week I went to buy some smart clothes for a job interview (a job that I didn't get) and I found myself, for the first time in about 6 years, I bought clothes from the high street. While I'm at the biggest size, It's still a step up from having to get everything off the internet and the inevitable problem of nothing fitting.

Wednesday for lunch I had tuna/pasta salad but apart from that still soup everyday for lunch. For dinner:

Friday: Sausage, mash, veg
Saturday: Steak and chips
Sunday: Roast beef, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, cabbage
Monday: Chinese takeaway
Tuesday: Pork, cous cous, roasted parsnips and carrots
Wednesday: Chicken in a tomato sauce with potato wedges and salad
Thursday: Sausage, mash, gravy, carrots and broccoli

Tale of the tape:

Actual starting weight: 20 stones 7lbs

Current Weight: 16 stones 6lbs

Next target: 16 stones 0lbs

Weight lost: 4 stones 1lbs

Until next week.

PEACE x
