Cannon's Journal

The biggest problem I face is a lack of a chance to go to the washroom or the ability to drink the large ammounts of water I need during the day :(. I haven't figured out how to deal with those two impediments.
Well... If you drink 2-3 cups in the morning. 2-3 during lunch. and then 2-3 afterschool. And then the rest when you get back home during dinner or whatnot? As for washroom breaks... Don't you have recesses? Or short 5 min intervals before the next period?

I have been taking water with me to work to drink at lunch. I don't like eating or drinking in front of the students who are stuck without food or drink, but I sneak in some water where I can.

Unfortunately, I did gain weight. I am up .8 pounds to 430.4. I am determined to have a much better week this time.
Wow. That's mighty considerate of you Cannon. Don't be too disheartened about the 0.8 pounds. It's barely a pound. I'm sure you can easily loose that within a week. Just keep at it! p'-'q

Have a nice weekend Cannon!

Unfortunately we have no recess or 5 minute break. Basically, I go from 9AM to 1PM. If I need to go to the bathroom I need to call the office and have them send a teacher aid up to cover my classroom. I then have to spend 4-5 minutes walking down the stairs and out to the other building where the men's room is located. At 1:00 I get 10 minutes for lunch and I can usually go then.

I just checked out Sparkspeople today--pretty interesting, but I need to register. I don't count calories because it makes me eat junk to get up to a set number. I do know that my calorie count was fairly accurate because I googled comparable items.

I would love to let my students have water, but they don't allow it for some liability reasons (Stupid I know, but it's a big city school district without 2 brain cells to rub together). You are completely correct about the effect of hydration on learning.

 That's gotta be against labor laws! They work you all like slaves in Chicago schools!

You're right, that is stupid. Remind me to never send my kids to school in Chicago.

Ok...I never thought I'd add hydration to the list of reasons why I like homeschooling, but there it is ;)

Cannon, I think you're off to a great start! Trying to incorporate all these changes into your life will take time. I know that I don't have to use the restroom nearly as often as I did when I first started drinking a lot of water, so maybe as you continue to drink a lot, the same can happen for you!

Thanks :). I can tell you horror stories. We have amazing teachers as well as any I worked with in the ritzy suburbs, but the buracracy we work under is staggering. They printed about 500,000 calendars which they gave out to students, teachers, and community members this week and just discovered April only has 30 days. Oops, lol

ROTFL :D :D I'll bet that went over well!

Yesterday was partly a bizarre scale reading I think. I weighed myself this morning and I was at 427.6 which is 2 pounds less than last week and almost 3 pounds lighter than yesterday. I've been limiting my calories to about 1500 to 1700 usually, but when I get one of those 2000 calories days its amazing how fast the scale creeps up. That's annoying since I know it takes over 5000 calories for me to even maintain teaching at this weight.

Next week has its own challenges. I will be going out after work Friday. I try and organize a get together early in the school year for the whole faculty. Tonight we're playing poker and I will not have beer, but poker chips aren't the only chips that will be flying so I'm prepared for that as well. Even though I know a daily scale reading isn't very important since weight fluctuates quite a bit from day to day it feels great to know I lost for my first school week with kids despite some less than perfect choices. I can do this.

I understand completely about not being able to go to the bathroom during the school day!!

Project C: Most school schedules have the classes back to back with only passing time in between for the students....and since it's illegal to have students in your classroom without the teacher there, there really is no time for a teacher to pop out and pee. Maybe on a rare occasion or an extreme emergancy but on the whole you'd better be in your classroom if kids are there.

Cannon: Sounds like someone has to teach the administration the calendar song... 30 days hath September, April, June, and November!!

Keep up the good work!!

Things are a little complicated for me by the fact I'm a male and I'm 6 feet tall. The boys bathroom is next to my room, but it's sized for children and me trying to use one would resemble something done by Chris Farley in Tommy Boy way too much for my comfort. There is a faculty bathroom on the floor, but it really is a women's room and since there aren't a lot of male teachers we wind up having to go outside and to the other building.

Why don't you get one of those male/female signs and stick it on the faculty bathroom door - that way it is NOT just for women!

Hey Cannon,

Must say those working hours seem a little extreeme. And if you don't get breaks for trips to the bathroom it doesn't sound entirely legal. maybe get a union to tell you wether or not it something to pursue, at least look into it:)

Hey, I kind of like M2M's idea, but I'd have to approach it carefully. Some of the female faculty isn't fond of sharing anything. As for illegality--I don't know. I think it is pretty much the way for teachers everywhere. I could get a break to hit the bathroom, but it'd be a big production number. In the old days, teachers would leave the room and put a student in charge and the students would be mostly quiet. If you did that today you'd have a lawsuit so fast.

I am off to work now. I couldn't walk today cause it is nasty out, but I got up and made the effort. I will visit journals after I get home today so all better be on the straight and narrow. Don't make me get all teachery on your journals ;)

as long as you leave the seat down.. it shouldn't be an issue :D if not take it up with the ACLU... besides, women are far more disgusting in public restrooms than men ever are... though they'd probably be insulted if you said that :D

Well Mal, I don't know if I would agree *entirely* with what you said, but I definitely think making it an official male/female bathroom is in order. It's in the faculty room.

Hey Cannon! Hi 5 for getting up this morning to walk! Sorry the weather wasn't consisten with you motivation today though. Hoopefully tomorrow the weather will be better.

cannon all that when I was in school was the norm. I remember some teachers pet sitting and taking names and well they didn't get invited to best parties that was for sure. Now everything has changed and it's just no fun any more. Alot of it with the restroom is your an educator and they assume you will go with the system. See me, I couldn't go with that I would go into the principals office in the middle of some hi palootin meeting and sit a tin on his/her desk and announce to the whole staff that when I need to go this is where I'm coming to do it till I'm get my own place to go. Though I wouldn't be working there long, you have to love those last great acts of defiance lol.

OMG -
What a great image Randy - and yes...Last Great Acts of Defiance! LGaD
Too Funny!

Thanks everybody for stopping by the diary. I may see what I can do about the bathroom. It really isn't a teacher's lounge though it once was. It is now 2 special ed classrooms. We really have no break room so to speak.

I miss Crunchie and Beagle!! I just got over Val vanishing. I know this will happen with a forum dedicated to weight loss, but I really hope Crunchie and Beagle didn't give up.

I really want a good week, but I'm not even focusing on the scale as much as keeping those changes going. I really have been doing great with that 7 hours of sleep (8 on the weekend thing). It does make a difference. Now if I can keep the diet going and the weather cooperates I'll have a very healthy week.
