Calves.

Hi all me again.........
When I have been doing my strangth training on my legs, I avoid doing my calves like the plague as they are quite large. Eben tho I am an average dress size, if I buy knee length boots I have to buy them from the outsize shop so they fit over my calves. They are about 14" at there biggest.
Yesterday I was advised to do calf exercises to get the fat off them and get more definition. Does this sound right? I know you all say girls wont get muscly, but will doing calf excersises actually make them look better instead of bigger?
Thanks again.

By the way I have lost 1lb this week...... I am still not managing to eat 1500 cals a day, But I am eating in the region of 1200 (some days I have hit 1400). Is 1lb a week ok or would I maybe lose 2lbs a week if I can up my calories. I have bought some whey protein, only problem is my lads are now off school for a week so I cant get to the gym. :(

Doing calf exercises will not make the fat disappear from there. Reducing overall body fat is the only way to make fat disappear from a certain place. Some people have large calf muscles and that sounds like you. I wouldn't worry about doing strenuous calf exercises. They get worked while walking and doing anything involving the legs. You can do standing calf raises without fear of making them bigger. If you do weight bearing exercises (weight calf raise, toe press) then you could increase calf size if you gain muscle there fast.

1 pound of weight lost is good for a week. 1-2 pounds per week is a safe zone. Kids home from school? Don't let that stop you! Take those kids for a walk or a hike. Play tag with them. Reconnect on a physical level with them. Be their role model! Create a "kid friendly" boot camp workout that you all can do. Get that exercise in there!! :D

Katey - you can do calf exercises without fear of them getting bigger. If your only eating 1200-1400 cals perday there is noway your gonna gain any noticable muscle mass throu weight training.
Stick to the 15-25rep scheme.

Are your calfs big from muscle or fat?

to test, stand on one leg, now lift the heel of your standing foot so you are standing on the ball of your foot. (use one hand on a table for ballence.
now bend down and test with your hand if the calf is still soft or hard.

Thanks guys.
I will be out and about with the lads....... can't sit in all day it will drive me insane!!
I suppose my calf muscles are quite big, but there is also fat there. Although I am 170lbs I am not really fat, I look ok if you know what I mean, dont look all flabby. Im one of these who stores solid fat rather than flabby fat (I know what I mean, sounds odd when you say it tho) does that make sense?
Hopefully it will go with this healthy eating plan..... I know you cant spot reduce, but theres not alot of places it can go from so my legs must be the first!
Onwards with the diet then.........lol
