Buying a laptop

So I think I am going to buy a laptop for basic business usage. I love my Dell Desktop with its 19" monitor, so a laptop is going to be sacrificing a lot.

I think I have found one, its an IBM Thinkpad T30. Its older, but I dont really need anything except email, web, ebook and web site creation. So I found one that is $250. The T30 had great reviews when it came out and was close to $3,000.

Anyone have one?

I don't know how barebones the T-30 is, but I have a T-60 & T-61, and I LOVE them. Only good things to say about Thinkpad (IBM and/or Lenovo).

I've had an old skool Toshiba & a machine in the Dell Inspiron series some time ago. The Toshiba was nothing special, and I literally destroyed the Dell (and I know the correct definition of literally - hehe).

Good luck!

Well I type this from my new T30.

Price range was cheap. I will upgrade but I needed something decent and at a low price. I didnt want to get something new and cheap, because then you get ****.

Just ordered two 512mb cards to increase the RAM from 256.

The wireless card is an 802.1b and I am thinking of getting a g card. However they say IBM's are tricky when it comes to upgrades. 11.0mbps is alright, but more is always good.

I would not have advised anyone to get an old computer. Get a future-proof computer/laptop unless its a free donation from your friends/relatives.

Something new/up-to-date now will not need major upgrades/financial outlay. Getting a used computer and then upgrading graphic cards, RAM, wireless, network cards, HDD is a waste of money IMHO.

I missed this thread.

That's actually a very decent buy for starting out, tony. You don't want a lot of heavy duty hardware on a road warrior rig. Just eats up the battery like mad.

I dont actually need to update anything really. I am updating the RAM out of convenience.

Funny I actually ordered the RAM (2x512) off the IBM specs site. Got it and only 1 slot would read. I called the place about using a single 1GB chip since I figure maybe one of the slots is out. He says thats not the right kind according to their stuff. So he is sending me 2 new 512mb and 1GB card to try out. I was using the 512mb chip and could not connect to the internet to save my life. Reinstalled the 256 and no problems. Hopefully the right cards (according to them) will work and everything will be okie dokie.

I didnt want to spend more then $300 so this was IMO a good buy.
