BugDude is back, and has a plan

3/30....10.34 mies....51 minutes....12.1 mph....1213 calories

Cold out this morning. Weigh-in day tomorrow.

3/31 Rest Day (unless I have time to bike this afternoon)

Official Weigh-in Day.

Start Weight 2/6 326
Weigh-in on 3/31 310
Total amount lost -16

Looking back, I've lost 7 pounds since 2/14. So, 7 pounds in 6 weeks.

As hard as I've been working on the bike and watching my dietary intake I'd be fibbing if I didn't admit I'm somewhat disappointed in the 7 pounds since Valentine's Day. A pound+ a week still isn't bad though over time considering I've got sustainable flexibility in my approach. Consistency wins the battle.

This does bring into question something I've been wondering since I started biking. I'm suspecting the mapmyrun app is overestimating the calories burned biking by a considerable amount. Mathematically speaking 1 pound = 3500 calories. I've tracked them all going in and out each day and based on the caloric deficit from my BMR and intake and the additional calories burned from the app it would suggest the actual calories burned are actually about 60% of what the app calculates. I could manipulate my weight in the app to adjust for that or just know in my head and on my tracking spreadsheet to take 60% of the number it says. Or just keep doing what I'm doing and let it all take care of itself over time. I'm not going to stop biking or watching my diet either way, so it really doesn't matter.

4/1....9.83 miles....43 minutes....13.8 mph....1203 calories

I rode this evening instead of this morning and had lots of energy. 13.8 mph is my fastest average yet. I've adjusted my tracking spreadsheet to calculate 60% of the app calories which seems to correlate mathematically to my combined calorie deficit and weight loss and makes more sense relative to calories burned on the treadmill. I'm going to keep putting what the app says here since that's what I've been doing.

After my initial disappointment from the weigh-in, I've adjusted my expectations (and tracking) and accepted it is what it is at the level I'm doing it and if I want more I'll have to tighten down on both sides of the equation. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing for now and slowly try to ramp up the exercise with shorter ride days instead of full rest days, mixing in treadmill, and resistance/weights.

4/2. Rest Day

I had an early meeting this morning and when I got home had to mow, trim, then spread lime and fertilizer on the lawn. I wanted to go for a ride this evening but I left work a lot later than I intended and then ran out of time. I'm having some oral surgery tomorrow, but plan on getting up early and hitting the bike. I may not feel like doing any biking for a few days after that. We'll see.

Accepting your body´s pace is so hard, but I´m glad you stick to doing it the healthy way!
Good luck with the surgery, don´t overdo things as long as wounds are still healing.

Just out of curiosity I got on the scales this morning. They said 304. 3 days ago they said 310. These are fairly new digital scales. Water retention maybe? That's what is so frustrating about living and dying by a number on the scales.

In any event, my curiosity got the best of me. Perhaps rather than weighing one day and that's it at the end of the months I weight several times over the course of a week to vet out any water retention variations. Or just ignore the stupid scales all together.

Something else interesting. I got an e-mail notice from this forum that someone has tried to login under my name 5 times in a row using the wrong password and locked the account up for a while. That's weird.

4/4....20.28 miles....1 hour 33 minutes....13.0 mph....2401 calories

Hit a bike trail today. Only stopped once to switch out water bottles and eat a quick snack. Well, stopped another time when I found $5 laying on the trail.

4/5....3.61 miles....18 min....12.2 mph....410 cals

I got caught in the rain, tried to keep going and then the bottom fell out and I got soaked. I circled back home and cut it short.

That happened to me about 6 weeks ago. I appreciate the fact that this forum, compared to so many others, are onto spammers & hackers. They do a great job!

I have to give them credit for trying to hack into your account because your thread is interesting. Mine, pretty dull really. Just a dude tracking how much he rides a bike. Not much else to tell. Of all the people on this board to pretend to be, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel with me. Perhaps they started at the top of the barrel with you 6 weeks ago and just worked their way to the bottom of the barrel?? :smilielol5:

About to be under 300, woooohooooo!!! Wonder why someone would want to hack into your account? Wouldn't accomplish much. I better check my e-mail. Maybe someone is jealous of your success :). Keep it up. You're an inspiration to me with your work ethic and pushing hard. Keeping me going. And you found five bucks... quite the fortunate you're having.

Thanks dude. My first mini-goal is under 300 and I'm getting close. Biking has improved the quality of my life both physically and from a stress management standpoint. I'm so glad I found it.y golf game has improved, my energy level has improved, my sleeping has improved, etc. my resting heart rate is down to 51. Two months ago it was in the 80s. Seeing and feeling such dramatic results has kept me motivated and excited to keep biking. And the improvement in distance and speed in biking has been motivating and energizing. I'm glad tracking it here is helping you. When you find something that clicks like biking has for me, it doesn't feel like work. I look forward to it and need to do it.

4/7....6.76 miles....31 minutes....13.0 mph....801 calories

I'm changing up my routine to do shorter rides rather than a complete rest day. I'll try this for a little while and see how it goes. Based on early meetings and weather I'll still have some rest days but trying to minimize them. Even if it's just 3-4 miles I want to try doing something every day.

I had a 7:30 am meeting this morning so I got up at 5:15 and then did a short ride. Made my meeting on time.

4/8....9.76 miles....45 minutes....12.9 mph....1148 calories

Taking the family to Busch Gardens theme park today since the kids are out of school for spring break. Should be fun.

Ha ha Bugdude! The only reasons anyone would try hacking into any of our accounts, I would imagine, would be to start posting as us & then spamming or to get our email addresses & spam us. There are some stupid, annoying people out there. Thanks for the compliment (I think) about my thread. I often think I must be boring people to death, rather than it being interesting, but figure it's not compulsory for anyone to read it & I find it very therapeutic. A lot of people are more into posting stat's, I talk about more personal stuff. We almost all have something else in common, other than wanting to lose weight and/or get fit. I find it interesting how biking is changing your life for the better & we also share an interest in golf. Cheers, Cate.

I used to be OCD about golf and was really focused on it competitively. I had a golf cub in my hand every day, practicing elements of my game for hours and playing a minimum of 4 times per week on top of the practice. In my early to mid 30s I was a 1.2 handicap and shot numerous under par and par rounds per year. The last 6 years (since my son was born when I was 40) I really kind of lost a lot of interest in golf. I went 2 years and hardly played at all and never practiced. Now I only play a couple times per month, more in the summer, and still shoot mid to upper 70s. Other interests took over, like restoring antique Volkswagens, going to car shows, target shooting and teaching firearm safety classes, painting murals on one of my old VWs, teaching myself how to play guitar, going to the beach (since we live 10 minutes away), and now riding a bike. I like golf, but I'm not passionate about it anymore. Sometimes I'll get back into it for a while but not like I used to be. Maybe getting in better shape and bombing the ball like I used to will give me the fire back for the game. We'll see.

The trip to the amusement park today...after several hours on my feet I was wishing I hadn't biked this morning. My legs are toast. I should sleep good tonight. Still plan on riding in the morning though. I can always cut it short but I still want to do something.

:D How do you even find time to eat!?
