BugDude is back, and has a plan

Wow, very impressive after a 12 hour day to put in that effort!

Appropriate to my post yesterday, though it may not apply from what you were saying, this popped up on my FB feed later today:

Good read. Thanks. My wife has always been small and doesn't truly understand the weight challenge I've struggled with. She's been supportive and is asking me more about meal planning. Meals are tough since I eat a lot of lean meat and our daughter is a vegetarian. But I work with whatever and adjust as necessary.

We all miss opportunities to not say things or where we could have expressed things better, but we're fine. Just a minor bump in the road. I could have handled it better by saying "Because that's who I am and what I do. Probably not going to change after 46 years."

5/11....10.78 miles....54 minutes....12.1 mph....1259 calories

Miles 4,5, and 6 were high intensity (13.3, 12.8, 12.8) with moderate beginning and end. I almost hit a deer on my bike in the dark this morning. I saw the silhouette of a deer crossing the road up ahead and I know there's usually a second not far behind. I slowed down and as I turned up that road where the first came from the second jumped out right in front of me. Good size one too. Barely missed it. Taking the bike in this afternoon for its initial tune up which is due, so rest day tomorrow. After 5 days in a row I'm in need of it. Still doing well on my diet and staying at my daily calories. Lots of broiled fish and fresh vegs.

Thank goodness you didn't hit the deer. That could have really hurt! (and poor deer too, though she probably would have faired better!) Good job staying in your cals!

I almost hit a deer while riding my motorcycle many years ago, that was frightening. Can't imagine it on a bike! Glad you're not here to fill in my imagination.

3/13 Rest Day in terms of biking

Got to bed late last night and had to get up early for work this morning, then after work I went to the driving range and worked on my golf game and then came home and pressure washed the front of the house and about a third of my fence. I've got to finish the fence this weekend. But tomorrow my wife and I have a sitter coming from 12:00 - 4:00 and we're going biking together. I'm hoping she can do 8 miles, but at the pace she needs to go I'll have to stay in low gears. Maybe I can get in some hard riding when we get home. As much as I've been going at it, a couple days rest did my legs some good. I need a good long ride Sunday but I'd like to get a round of golf in too. I've got some upcoming golf outings with some buddies and I need to get my swing back in order. Still working the diet and still committed to not weighing until the end of March. Back on the bike tomorrow.

Enjoy the bike ride with your wife and don´t focus on the training aspect of it or you´ll get stressed out!

3/14....8.62 miles....61 minutes....8.5 mph....811 calories
3/14....9.06 miles....45 minutes....12.1 mph....1059 calories

So my wife and I went out to a trail this afternoon and did the 8.6 miler. I stayed in low gears and spun a lot but never really did get my heart rate up. She pretty much maxed out and we stopped often. But still, for her to do 8.6 miles no more than she's been riding is great. So when we got home and I unloaded the bikes, I went out on the 9 miler in our neighborhood and went after it pretty good. So I burned a total of 1870 calories on the bike today.

I was talking to my neighbor just a minute ago and he said, "Man, you've really lost a lot of weight!" I replied, "I've not checked how much, but I can tell a big difference." I told him how much I've been biking. It feels great when someone who doesn't know you're trying to lose weight or exercising notices and says "a lot." That's better than scales!!!

I had 2 beers today, the first beers I've had since the beginning of Feb, and still only went over my cals by 35 for the day.

I worked in the yard for 4 hours this morning and forgot to eat breakfast. Had a great lunch: baked salmon with a light bourbon glaze and a roasted spaghetti squash. And a fresh salad with light dressing. The family went to tour a restored WW2 airplane and then stopped for ice cream. I had about 200 calls of chocolate and I still have plenty of room in my calories for a good supper. Don't know if I'll get a ride in today since we have to take my wife's van in for service tonight. If not, back at it in the morning.

3/16....10.35 miles....51 minutes....12.3 mph....1222 calories

Back at it this morning. I didn't feel like I had a ton of energy after not biking yesterday, but I worked in the yard 4 hours each day Fri, Sat, and Sun.

You're a machine!!!

Quick question? How you feeling these days, physically? Better? The same? Worse? I mean I understand you're probably exhausted after doing all the working out, but are you otherwise feeling pretty good?

Anyway, great job on the biking and general activity levels. You're doing fantastic.

I feel great!!! Much better than I have in a long time. I have more energy generally and am getting out and doing more and being more active, I'm sleeping great, and I'm not hungry at all. I'm also not feeling deprived of any foods because I'm working things into my calorie plan. I'm also not being super rigid and am giving myself flexibility. I'm taking rest days, and having lighter workout days, and I'm giving myself more calories on days I'm extending rides. I've occasionally worked in some cookies, ice cream, and a little alcohol, so I'm not missing any of those things. And the food I'm eating is stuff I really like.

3/17....10.25 miles....51 minutes....12.0 mph....1194 calories

I'm tracking my biking on a spreadsheet and I really feel a sense of personal accomplishment to see the trends on distance, duration, and speed going up. I hope to continue to see improvement in my routine rides and also in endurance and distance in my long rides. At some point way down the road, I have a personal goal to some day do a 100 mile ride. Small steps, but I'm just hanging this out there as a long-term ultimate goal. My longest so far is 20% of that. I'm just going to keep chipping away and grind it out eventually. I'm not in a hurry, slow and steady.

I'm glad you're still destroying the cycle! You have a good trend, nice pace, and great work ethic. I really admire that. You're doing amazing. You keep winning the mental battle and putting up these numbers, that 100 mile ride is going to be seen in no time at all. Great job, BugDude!

Thanks dude. I'm channeling my obsessive compulsive tendencies (all or nothing as my wife says) and using them to my advantage to stay on the biking. I can get very task oriented and be consistent on hammering something out and getting good at it. I'm very hand/eye coordinated and can easily do things over and over again. That's why golf has been a good sport for me. Concentration, attention to detail, repetitive nature of the game and practice. Same with target shooting and teaching myself how to play musical instruments by ear. I can figure out how to play songs by sounding them out and then repeat playing them until they are burned in my muscle memory. Then I can play them without even thinking. Same with biking. I can just get lost in the numbness of hammering out miles with high intensity without even thinking about it. I enjoy that numbness and solitude. It's good physically and mentally.
