After poking around for a little while I need to say that many of you on here are a great inspiration! I hope by journaling my progress and thoughts, etc. that I can be an inspiration to others as well. I'm 27 years old and I'm just sick of feeling unhappy with my appearance. I began gaining weight near the end of high school and have gone up and down and even further up to my present weight! I know that I need to stop abusing my body and I'm ready to change my life - not to "diet." I've already taken some small steps to begin my journey and have dropped a few pounds. Overall I need to lose about 120 pounds, but I will know when I have reached my goal based on the clothing I am able to wear. I am just shy of 5ft11 and would like to fit into a 12 or 14.

I renewed my gym membership and started working out again last Monday. My current goal is to make it to the gym at least five days a week. Today was day five for this week. I did the "weight loss" cycle on both the treadmill and the elliptical. I was a sweaty red mess when I finally left, but I felt great - I always feel great when I start working out regularly - that's not the problem. In the past I have "fallen off the wagon" and stopped working out for pretty lame reasons! I'm determined that this is going to be the time I stick it out.

Diet wise I have also started making changes. I gave up the sugar-laden coffee creamers that I so love in my morning coffee. I have also sworn off all fast food and am really trying to stay away from processed foods.

So, with my Ipod loaded and a new gym membership I begin this journey optimistically!!

Welcome and best of luck to you! :)

My one piece of advice for starters is, realize that weight loss is purely a function of energy balance. While its great that you have taken the steps to clean up what you are eating now.... if you are eating too much, even of the right things, you will not lose, and maybe even gain.

What are you doing in the gym?

Hi Steve - Thanks for being the first response to my first post! I have been reducing my portions and watching my calorie intake, it's something I know I'll be working on for a long time to come. As far as my fitness plan goes - I'm doing at least 30-45 minutes of cardio five days a week and strength training 3 days a week. If it works w/my school schedule I may try a pilates class also.

Hi, and welcome to your diary! I found that it has been easier for me to stay true since I am posting daily what I eat. There are days I screw up, but I continue to post my calories. It doesn't do me any good to lie about things because the scale is a pretty good idea of what's going on, however, I busted my tail for almost a month and didn't lose a lb until recently!

Don't get discouraged and and keep up with your diary! We are here to help, not to judge!

Welcome, I'm pretty new here too. The diary is a good way to keep yourself honest. I would have to say that I recommend you weigh yourself now to find out where you are and then once a week(or more) to know where you are when losing. Judging by clothing will not be very helpful. Also, it is inspiring when you see that you've lost weight and you can see the numbers in front of you. This is one of the best things you can do to stay on track.

Thanks for the posts Photocrazed and Stuco. Today was a tough day for me workout-wise. I did my resistance training first and felt okay - the elliptical just wasn't my friend this evening! I've felt a little on edge today though and overtired. In general I have trouble sleeping and it seems like it's worse since I started back to the gym. In the past exercise has really helped regulate my sleeping - hopefully that will kick in soon.... In any case, I made it through the weight loss cycle on the elliptical and spent most the of time in my cardio zone.....

Calories today - 1550

**tried a new cereal today from Trader Joe's - Organic Golden Flax. Not so great - but I'm always up for trying new things!!
