ive been doing box pulls recently form ABOVE the knee for a change up because i thought this was a weak point, turns out its my strongest range rather than of the floor. ive been improving last couple weeks but im capable of lifting more than my grip can take. i train for strength so im not wanting to use straps. ive been doing timed holds at the top 1-5 secs and this brought my grip up but i feel its slowing. should i maybe go back to this in a week or two and do full range? or continue with what im doing?

thanks

Almost everyone reaches a point where they can deadlift more than they can grip. Are you using an overhand grip or an alternating grip? You may need to reset your grip on every rep, even using an alternating grip, but at some point if you have average hip and back strength you will be able to deadlift more than you can grip for more than 1 rep.
You can try to do some assistance exercises for your grip, preferrably immediately after deadlifting. Try hanging leg raises, wrist curls, hand grippers, etc.
