Another good day today. Lost three pounds since last week, which is nice. I gave blood today, though I had to be tested for West Nile virus, as I'd been to Canada within the past year...appearently, Egypt was where they first found the virus.

Couldn't sleep tonight though, so I think I'm pulling an all-nighter. Watched some House and Criminal Minds, and I fixed my chainmail hauberk...it got mashed pretty badly from the last time I went LARPing, and I never go around to patching the holes/giant tear down the left shoulder.

I call it man-knitting, weaving all the individual rings, hehe. It's my birthday Friday, hopefully I can find enough cash spare to buy another few kg of rings - I've more things I'd like to make, including bracelets - would be nice to try and sell some stuff. With the galvanised steel rings I have, they'd get oxidised and dirty, so they're only good for practice runs of things like jewelery.

Physiotherapy appointment in...10 and a half hours. Will be nice - my second trip to see Katie, hehe. Let's hope she approves of my week's activities, and whether she'll let me have a day off for my birthday...I heard rumours of my mother making me a strawberry pavlova.

good effort :)

we don't get many interested in LARP where I live but knitting mail it certainly time consuming, I am better working with leather.

Hehe, it's been a while since I went LARPing. I couldn't wear all my gear and still breathe at the moment, heh.

Never worked with leather, but I'm interested in it - I'd like to make some pauldrons, that would involve three layers of leather on top of each other - how thin do you think I should go with the leather?

Are you going to harden the leather or just rely on the layers of soft leather ? my leathers were made mostly from vegetable tanned saddle leather (managed to get some cheap offcuts :) ) which was boiled in wax and shaped onto a mannequin before it hardened.

At some point I would like to tan my own leather to make a suit from scratch.

Wouldn't harden the leather - it only has to be able to turn a latex sword after all. Two layers attatched to sleeves of chainmail, with a third layer on top, covering the joins between the two materials was what I was thinking.

that sounds like a feasible way to do it, the thickness of the leather used in saddles should meet your needs (not sure how thick that is in cm or inches) and If you visit a saddle maker you may even be able to pick up off cut pieces which are large enough for a cheap price as good leather is expensive. thinner chemical tanned leather would probably be to soft even for a LARP sword.

Mm...been looking at a company online called LePrevo. There is a saddler in the town I live in, but I visited him before, and he's an unhelpful arse, basically. Told me he didn't have the time or will to find something to sell me, heh.
