Big Mac's Lifestyle Change

Haha, ok Tyly, I like the name! I'm Shaun.

Yeah it tastes pretty good I think. You can even put a scoop in unflavored nonfat yogurt for a chocolate pudding type substitute. I usually just do 2 scoops in skim milk. My protein requirements are a lot more than yours though I'm sure.

Ok, now here's a stupid question. I've never done the protein thing before (shakes, powders, etc)... when is the optimal time to take it? Pre workout? Post workout?

You can't really go wrong either way. I'd say you're better to do it post-workout though. I'd go higher carb pre-workout for the energy. Then protein post-workout for the muscle building.

You know Shaun, us women hate the words "muscle building". We immediately think of bulking like men do. Most women don't know that they can't physically bulk up like a guy, and that's why they always use light weights more reps. Hell, even I thought that till about a month ago, then I started to up my weights. But you still have to sugar coat it for us. I think "better/quicker muscle recovery" is a much more accepted term haha.

Well women like that probably aren't gonna do protein shakes anyways. :D Anyone, man or woman, that thinks if they lift weights a couple days a week they'll look in the mirror one day and be a bodybuilder. Well, they just don't know what they're talking about. :D Your muscle requires food, it likes protein... so eat/drink some. It would take YEARS of heavy training and some lucky genetics to end up like you ladies imagine.

And women that think that DON'T do protein shakes. I didn't think protein was a big deal a little while ago, but now that I am losing a lot of fat, I want to see some definition in my arms. I want to be "cut" GRRRR!!!!. I think that protein would play a very important roll in this, as well as incresing the weights and whatnot. I plan to buy some whey this evening, and your low cal whey protein sounds like a perfect fit for me :)

Oh and I didn't say they avoid the weight lifting altogether, but they just fear the 15 lb and 20 lb dumbells. I'm sure they would still weight lift, but just use 5 lbs and do 50 reps.

A lot of that stuff is myth as well Amanda. About the weight/rep ratio. I'm trying to up my protein, I'm not getting enough. The other great thing about protein is that it satisfies hunger better than other alternatives.

I know Amanda, other people read here though. Maybe these ladies will take your advice and realize that lifting a good amount of weight and increasing their protein intake for "muscle recovery and rebuilding" isn't a bad thing. :D

Let's cross our fingers and hope. There ain't enough defined and toned women in this world. Sheesh!!!

I have a question... do you think that men in general do not like their girls to have bigger muscles than them??

It all depends on the guy. I would say for the most part, no... they don't want women with bigger muscles. With saying that though, you're kinda playing back into that false belief that you can build muscle as fast as a man. Testosterone plays a big role in muscle building, men obviously have a lot more of this. Also mens bodies are naturally built to be lower bodyfat percentage than a womans body. Knowing these things, if a man and woman both do the same amount of strength trainging 4 days a week for 8 months. The man will be a lot more likely to get bigger muscles, and the woman get toned. It's just the way our bodies work. If I were a woman (heh, what a funny thought) I would train with reckless abandon. I'd never worry about having big muscles. Your body isn't built to do that and regardless it won't happen overnight.

I think that it's the very rare exception that a man would like to have his girlfriend/wife have bigger muscles. Good muscles are almost always appreciated, but it's very rare that the woman would be bigger.

Like Shaun said, don't sweat it much. You can get some serious muscles and if the guy is a skinny twerp then you just kick his ass into shape. :D

Yeah, getting "big" naturally is not something you really have to worry about. Your body will want to naturally tone as you lift weights, even at high weights/low reps. The way those female bodybuilders get big is through taking illegal supplements, and legal ones as well. Supplements that block the flow of estrogen and increase the production of testosterone.

Today's food:

Breakfast: 1/2 Grapefruit, FiberOne Raisin Cluster w/ 1% milk
AM Snack: Nonfat yogurt, a few almonds and baby carrots
Lunch: Tunasald on a Lowcarb wrap w/ tomatoes
PM Snack: (Thinking about some more Tunasalad)
Dinner: Grilled chicken breast w/ wild rice and black beans (already prepared :D )

40oz greentea
100oz water so far...

Ha I think it depends on the guy... but I would say yes I don't think men want their women to be bigger or stronger than they are. I myself would like to have cut arms as well... but only to a point of still looking femine... I think Jillian from the biggest looser is a little "too" cut... maybe just a notch below that would be nice... Know what I mean Jelly Bean???:biggrinjester:

Well shit I'm on birth contol so there aint any blockage of estrogen here haha.

Ya I was just wondering. My crazy mother mentioned that, and though I figure it's true, I don't think she took into consideration at the time that women don't bulk up like men do. And I think when I heard it I wasn't really taking that into consideration either haha. Either that or she meant men don't like their women to be stonger than them. Whatever she meant, I just said 'I don't really care cus I'm gonna keep working out and lifting weights' I may have actually said too that if they didn't like it, it would then be a challenge for them to start lifting to :D

Jillian works out for a living, so shes almost on another plateau, haha. I don't think many of us will ever look like a celebrity personal trainer. What do you think MissD?

Ok, so here it goes...

So, in the last 7 weeks I have somewhat created my own diet. Diet being what I eat for the rest of my life, not what I eat for a few months to loose weight. I completely cut out HFCS and fried foods. Stay away from the bad fats, heavy starches like corn and potatoes, and away from the bad carbs like white breads and pastas. Pretty much doing a throwback to the old days of whole wheat, whole grain, lean meats and cheeses, fruits and veggies, and an ass ton of water.

You guys and gals seem to really motivate eachother and I'd really like to get in on that to help push me to my goal. Nothin is taboo hit me up with whatever questions or comments ;).

Hello Mac!

My first time here, I didn't realize you were so new to the forum. You seem like an old pro at it.

I like your lifestyle change in both the food department and the exercise. You're doing amazing so far, I really mean that.

Keep up the great work.

Nothing happens overnight, that's for sure. So keep at the workouts, don't be afraid to strength train. When you get to a place that you like what you see... don't lift as often and go into a muscle maintenance schedule. Or just run a little more. Muscle breaks down on its own pretty easily.

Thanks MJ! Its a long road ahead but every step is one in the right direction, ya know? I wish I was an old pro, then I'd already be down to my goal weight :D. Yup, I'm just a newbie. :blush5:
