This is what I have been told at certain gyms. You do weights straight after cardio in order to turn the burned fat into muscle mass.
Don't worry about bulking up into a weird muscle body builder. It takes lots of protein and lots of massive weights in order to get VERY big.
I've been going to the gym for about 9 months now and while I have bigger muscles than before, I wouldn't say I look out of proportion or odd.
