Bent over row - Makes me feel ill - Nausea

I was just wondering if this affects anybody else or if it is just me who gets an ill feeling in their stomache when performing a bent over row with a dumbell. I don't know why it makes me feel like this but i just feel sick when doing it usually lol.

Is there anything to replace it with that could even be better for me aswell as getting rid of the nausea feeling??

Just switch them for pull ups/chin ups if your having trouble.

What are you eating pre-workout, if anything?

Get rid of them if they make you sick. Replace them with standing BB rows. They are a better exercise anyways in my personal opinion.

Fly, I don't believe that one should replace a rowing movement with a pullup/chinup since they focus two different areas. A good back workout should have BOTH pullups/chinups as well as a solding rowing movement to have a well targeted back.

I don't like standing BB rows due to the shoulder issues and rotator cuff issues the can present in some trainees.

I do agree that a pull-up doesn't replace a row though...both types of moves shoudl be incorporated into your routines. pull-ups/lat pulldowns for the lats and general back, while rowing will hit the rhomboids and general back.

bent over db rows shouldn't make you sick. are you holding your breath? not eating enough? leaning over too much and making blood rush to your head?

the idea is your back should be amost flat/parallel to the floor.

bent over barbell rows work the back pretty nicely too, and is essentially the same as DB rows.

the only exercise that makes me ill is too many squats/lunges.

maybe he meant replace them with standing bendt over bb rows? dont see why you would replace horizontal pull with a vertical pull (did i get that right now?)

I bet 10 to 1 they are making you sick because you have a rounded lower back. With a excessively rounded back, all your intenstines and digestive tract is getting "squished" by teh pressure of otehr organs because your back is rounded. The solution is to arhc your back and DON'T EAT HEAVY before a workout.
Also, keep yourslef hydrated...

Yeah, hydration is a good point. Heavy compound movements can easily make you a little dizzy or sick feeling if you doing keep yourself hydrated well enough. Holding your breath can especially do it to you as well.

bent over rows can be done in many different ways. it can be one dumbbell. "One dumbell row" or "cable one arm row", or seated row. all does the same muscles. I did it with the dumbell today (2 dumbbells in each hand. 12 pounds each hand) I changed my routine to mostly dumbells because of the advice I got. dumbells are freeweights; therefore, it works stabilizers as well and is better for the muscles.) Barbell keeps your hands in one place and works a certan muscle. I also like deadlift better with dumbbells too and I get more of a workout with them, and its faster too.

Before i workout usually a piece of fruit one hour before starting.

Although last night i had plain pasta one hour before (probably a bad thing lol).

I usually use a single dumbell and with a knee up on a bench, it could certainly be my posture/technique with my back so i'm going to try adjusting it. Or maybe switch it for something else instead pretty soon.

Its annoying because the times i can get to the gym are the busiest lol. It was packed full last night :-( Really slows down the workout.

Are you trying to bulk or cut? A piece of fruit isn't enough to sustain me for a whole workout. I generally eat oatmeal and a protein shake 1-1.5 hours before a workout. Fruit's carbs only give you quick energy...not enough for an hour long workout

Im trying to get my body more defined, don't really need to get huge. I don't think im muscular enough to just cut the body fat, i need to build up muscle aswell. I hear its difficult/impossible to do both at the same time though lol. I can't gain any more fat though, I'd prefer to start by cutting body fat if i had to make a choice between building muscle or cutting down the body fat.

I have a protein shake after a workout. But some oatmeal might be a good idea about an hour before my workout. I'll try that before i go to the gym a bit later tonight.

Dan, you should notice a pretty big difference. I burn out really quick when I just eat fruit...but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
