Before / Middle / After ... 19 year old male

Hey all, just wanted to post some pictures of my before and after. So, I'm a 19 year old male, turning 20 in April, and I decided to do a combination of the Bernstein Diet and a LOT of exercise.

I started by running daily for at least 30 minutes and lost 30 pounds by myself in approximately 4 months. After this I went on to do the Bernstein Diet, where I lost another 40 pounds. I've been off the diet for some time now, and have lost another 10 pounds, brining my total to 80 pounds lost.

These two different approaches were the hardest things I've ever had to do with my life, and I would never recommend the Bernstein Diet to anyone. Although this is so, it did do wonders to bring my weight down. Unfortunatly, since I lost a lot of weight over a fairly brief amount of time, I am forced to up my exercise to deal with the increased "looseness" of my body (particularily in my abdomen and thighs).

There have been a lot of negative setbacks because of the Bernstein Diet, which I could go on and on about the negative aspects of it, but I have gained so much from loosing weight. My girlfriend and me are happier than ever before, I'm living a more healthy lifestyle - going to the gym, running for fun! and also trying to influence those around me to make better choices in their nutrition and fitness.

I just wanted to share some of this insight with all of you. If you have any questions about anything, please let me know and I'll be sure to answer them. Also, if anyone has any advice on how to tighten up skin and my body that would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you know how long it usually takes to tighten based on an intense exercise regime. Thanks guys for your support and I REALLY wish you luck. Don't ever give up and just remember "A moment on the lips for a lifetime on the hips" (haha at least that's what my boss always tells me now!
 
That's impressive, I'm also 19 years old, I've been running now for almost a month for 20 minutes a day without missing a day... I haven't noticed a difference in anything yet, except I find it easier to just run longer...

I was just wondering, was it like that for you for the first bit, or should I increase my running time to at least 30 minutes a day.

Yes, that's the wife. Haha, our relationship has definitly gotten a lot better since I lost all my weight. It's not like looks were a major factor in our relationship, it just makes a huge difference to both parties when you look and FEEL a lot better.

To snowJT, that's awesome that you're doing that man. The first couple runs are always the hardest and it tends to get easier as you progress and continue running, therefore you should try and either increase the amount of time running or exert yourself just a little bit more for every week you run. As a general rule, it's best to increase either by 10 minutes or 1 mile every 1-2 weeks. Another thing you may want to try is high-interval training, which does wonders for your body. When you run at a steady pace for a long period of time your body adapts to that pace and burns calories at a constant, steady pace; if you were to change things up a bit (i.e. run for 5 minutes at 70%, then go down to 30%, then run at 90%, then down to 50%, then up to 130% ect ect.) your body cannot adapt to a steady calorie burning process so you end up burning more as you increase your spead every time. Also, your body doesn't reach it's peak fat burning power until after 20 minutes of runing. Your body uses up its temporary store of energy in the first 20 minutes, and everything after that is fat energy. So definitly try and keep your running at least over 30 minutes.

I'm not really a professional at all when it comes to working out, but I've read a lot of books and magazines and talked to many kin students and nutritionists about how to loose weight and how the body works.

Do you run for a certain amount of time before you mix up your speeds? or do you do it from the start.

Great job on the weight lose, I wish I could follow in your foot steps. I run each day on the treadmill for 1 hour and dont seem to loose anything so far, its been two weeks.
