Bad Elbow

My left elbow has been making a clicking sound a lot lately which sometimes causes slight pain. When I do Tricep exercises such as skull crushers i sometimes get pain in my elbows although I have always had that, it seems to be worse recently. I am only 15 and wonder if i shouldnt be doing weight lifting because of my age and what a lot of people say about weight lifting at a young age although i wonder if i am just getting paranoid.

Can someone please tell me what could be causing this and how i can stop it?

Thanks in advance

If this were a muscle ache, I would have downplayed it, but there are no muscles in your elbow, only bones, tendons and ligaments, none of which should be hurting. Your orthopedist (MD who specializes in bones, joints and muscles) can help you. Tell your parents about this problem.

Pain is the body's way to tell you that there is something wrong. Heed it.

My elbows always click...if I throw them back ( ie. extend my arm very quickly), but it never hurts.

I wonder if the clicking you are describing is the same.

But yes, hurting it should be not.

Thanks for the advice but i don't really want to go to the doctors or orthopedist because as soon as i say i do weightlifting they tell me that i shouldnt and then my mum won't want me to weightlift. It isnt hurting today and has only cracked a couple of times. I'll be working out today so i will see how it goes.

Do you think it could be a muscle imbalance, etc. Maybe the tricep is stronger than the bicep?

Listen to your mum. Continuing to work on that elbow while painful could lead to permanent damage that would prevent you from EVER working out.

I worked out last night and had no problem with it although i didnt do any direct tricep work (I only did Bench press, Bent over rows, Rear delt flyes and dumbell side bends.

My elbow has clicked a few times today although it didnt hurt.

Do you still think I should stop lifting and go to the Docs?

If your elbow clicks, that means you are not doing it right. My elbow clicks only when I am holding my arm wrong. Knees do that too. Make sure you are not using too much weight as well.

tricep exercises.

By the way - have you ever done any wrist, forearm, wrist turn exercises? Have you also done tricep extensions (overhead) one arm at a time with a dumbbell in one hand and your other hand holding onto your elbow as your doing it? How about a slow bicep curl? (make sure you are using light weight though). If so, does it hurt when you do them? If so, then it's a good idea to go see a doctor before you do anymore lifting because something may have happened with the elbow. Also - there are elbow sleeves availible in the stores that you can buy.

I just tried doing tricep extensions and slow curls and i had no pain in my left elbow but i did have pain and clicking in my right elbow when i did tricep extensions with my right arm:confused:

I don't understand why the pain has swapped to the right arm. Maybe its growing pains?

I have done some forearm exercises such as grippers and pinch grip and niether hurt although i don't think i've done any "wrist turn exercises"

Actually there is a muscle located at the elbow the anconeus and some do pass over it.. But more likely its due to improper from or lifting to heavy stressing the elbow joint which i would assume to be more specifically the ulnar-radial jnt if the clickings more on the side?.

Try not to twist your forearm if your already doing that, use proper form and perhaps lighten the load..

Ok, thanks for the advice. I will do my best to correct form and hopefully it will stop hurting and clicking.
