my sister has recently talked to me about workin out and said we should work out together so i can help her. one of her goals was to strengthen her lower back. i didnt have an answer for her becuz i dont know of any lowerback-specific exercises... any strengthening of my lower back is without my knowing. any ideas on some basic exercises?
 
deadlifts all the way. if shes never done them before, start with low weight and have her work on form and gradually move up as the weeks progress.

i cant stress how much form is important in this exercise.

be sure to keep the natural arch in the back at all times, keep your chest forward, and dont lean forward when lowering the weight. keep the bar as close to you as possible. you may have some scraped up knees when you are done, but its better than a blown back.
 
Yep, deadlifts are magic for lower back. Of course, the first time i tried a few sets i was walking around like an old man for a few days from my lower back being insanely sore :D
 
and all variations of deadlift, like stiff leg deads, and romanian deads. they all hit the same basic muscles (lower back, hip flexors, glutes, hamstrings...the posterior chain), just with different angles, and degress of stress.
