Back on Track

Hi Patty,

Thanks for stopping by my diary. You have a great sense of humor. Hang in there. I've been a bit down about the whole weight loss thing myself, but I'm ditching that funk! Hope you are having a great weekend. There is a new challenge starting, but you have to sign up by midnight tonight. If you are still on line, you should check it out. It is in the Club section of the forum.

Take care.

1352 cal for Monday. Counted Sat and Sun but can't find my paper - in the same ball park or less though. Kids go back to school tomorrow, so have been running around doing back-to-school shopping. No longer fall for eating on the run temptations, so that's big for me, but took about the past six months to form a habit (or non-habit) that really sticks.

Have couple of job opps on the horizon. Have been stay at home mom for 7 1/2 years, working a little on the side. It's scary to think of re-entering the work world full time. Prior to that I worked for the same company for 8 years, so I haven't had an interview since 1991. Weird. I like the idea of financial independence though.

Walking or jogging every day. I'm talking my friends into doing a 5k on October 28th - The Great Pumpkin 5K at the (Houston) Zoo. Should be fun. October is one of Houston's best months. I want to jog it all but told them they could walk/jog it. We are finally feeling fitter. Never thought we'd get past just walking.

We are also joining a free 30 day thing by self.com (click on Reach your Goal) that starts Aug. 21. You choose one of four goals - start an exercise habit, drop 8 pounds, sculpt sexy muscles, -or- go from walking to running.

Though I'm not at the weight I'd like to be at yet, today I'm proud when I look back over this year and see the little changes I've made that I now consider to be a part of my lifestyle. No longer a struggle or temptation.

It's not a diet, it's my new way of life.

So today is a good day. :p

Wed 08/16 Calories - 1095

Here is the link for stretching, core exercises, upper body and lower body exercises:

http://sparkpeople.com/myspark/ex/all_exercises.asp

It includes a pic and description for each stretch or exercise. Very clear and concise. Think I'll lift some weights tonight.

It's been a week since I've started counting calories. It's something I never wanted to do, but I'm glad I did it. It makes me accountable. It makes me think before I put something in my mouth. It makes me measure. It's not something I would do forever, but will do until I reach my goal weight.

When I measure by weight or volume, it's shocking to me how little a tablespoon or 3/4 cup (etc.) is. I feel like I'm retraining my eyes as to how much a serving really is. That's a big thing here in Texas, where portions are HUGE at most restaurants and we were taught not to waste food, to clean our plate.

One for the guys

Here's one from a list of guys' rules:

If something we said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you said or angry, we meant it the other way.

I have a new lowest weight. Hooray. This past week has really paid off.

Sounds like you're on the right track Patty! Jogging is an amazing way to lose weight. I did it for a little while and actually started to like it (I always hated running), but then I developed some shin problems, so it's been a couple of years since I ran.

Keep the jokes coming too! You have a great sense of humor.

I read through old joke emails I get because they crack me up, and it always lifts my spirits. I post them here now because I don't want to spam my friends with a barrage of joke emails. haha. Thanks for your comments 12pack.

I call it jogging because I've never been fast enough to call it running. Of course I mainly do it in our neighborhood, which has the worst surface possible - concrete.

I think there are a couple of stretches that will help prevent shin splints. That and decent shoes. And not running on concrete.

There is a place called Memorial Park in Houston where many, many runners go. It's about 25 minutes away, and I try to make it once per week now on Sat or Sun AM. It is a 3 mile track (plus longer runs, though haven't tried those yet) through beautiful trees on decomposed granite serface (that red stuff). It is so inspiring to go and see all size people at all levels of fitness moving their butts.

Dr. John Pagliano is a podiatrist quoted in a Men's Fitness article, June 2002. He comes down against concrete, saying that "if you switch to softer surfaces, you can cut your injury risk by 50%." In this particular article, the magazine rates ten running surfaces (1 being worst/10 being best) --

Asphalt: 6
Cinders: 7.5
Concrete: 1
Dirt: 8
Grass: 9.5
Sand: 4
Snow: 2.5
Track (referring to synthetically made tracks): 7
Treadmill: 6.5
Wood Chips: 9

I found this on: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=144092

Wait, I think I have a quip about shoes. Oh, here it is:

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. :p

Great stuff Patty!

I'm waiting for the rain to stop to get out on my bike ride today. Interesting info on the running surfaces, although I'd think I'd end up with a twisted ankle running on wood chips!

Several of us ate and drank at friends last nite. Lots and lots of calories. oh well, today did better.

This past week was a bad one. Weight never came down from party at friends. We missed workouts on Sun, Wed, Thur, Fri, Sun - only got it in Sat, Mon, Tue, Sat.

Three of us did go jogging today (Monday) and I really pushed us. We almost never miss more than one day a week, so this was a big shock to our bodies.

Look and feel like ?!@#%$.

50 minutes walking/jogging, 15 mins abs and shoulders/back/arms.

We have committed to a 5k jog. Its in 9 weeks. I told my friends we have to push ourselves to get ready. I'm not fast, never have been. But I want to jog continuously and it's time to step up the workout to make that happen.

We often walk and talk as much as or more than we jog. And we jog slowly. I want us to intersperse some faster bits of jogging (I'm not sure I'd call them sprints) with our walking. And add a few lunges before, during or after.

The girls did agree we should do something post workout, like work abs together. Put mats on the driveway or lawn. I think people tend to push their abs harder when around other people, so that should be interesting to try.

Hey Patty,
It sounds like you guys have a great plan ahead of you. Sometimes it is hard when working with other people, especially when you get together and like to chat, but at the same time, there are motivational aspects that make it all worthwhile!

Good luck with the 5K :)

thanks m2m, i was just reading some of your posts on other peoples' diaries. You are so sweet and encouraging to people. ty!

Hey Patty - that's awesome that you've signed up for the 5k. I find it's a great motivator. Keep up the jogging!

Hello Patty!
Way to go on the planning for the 5k! Good stuff! There's motivation for you and your friends! It's great to workout with friends as long as they are driven and you all can feed off of each others determination. You have quiet a plan to set in motion! Good luck with it!

Patty working out with others is a good thing..... sometimes. I always get behind the friend to wont let you pass. Once I can trip him without getting caught lol...... keep it up

Cannibals

want-a-be - thanks for the encouragement.

hillbillylee - lmao. i'll try that tip about tripping, should be very helpful.

12packabs - i appreciate your bean salad recipes and your encouragement.

Had a job interview today. It went very well. I'm pretty sure I got the job. Bought new blouse, pants, shoes and purse for the interview. Ended up wearing old pants I like better but had to pin them up - too baggy. tehe

Jogged this am with the girls; ran ahead of them a little and jogged back. Not sure they cared for that. Did pretty good on calories food choices, but did have some (Blue Bell) chocolate chip mint ice cream. omg is that stuff good and not at all good for you.

Speaking of eating....

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other, "Does this taste funny to you?"

No groans please from the audience. I think it's a funny one.

Had a salad early for dinner last night, went to a meeting. Came home after 8pm. Normally would have noshed until bedtime, but I resisted. yeah

Walked this morning with the g/fs, 42 minutes. Should have jogged, but didn't feel like it. Still worked up a bit of a sweat, though a cool front came in last night. Okay for Texas it was a cool front, it was about 69 degrees instead of already in the upper 70s by 6am. ha

Did a couple minutes of lunges. Love those because you can feel them while you do them and feel them again the next day. Anything that gives you that quick feedback that you pushed your body - it's a good thing.

It is a beautiful morning.

thanks m2m, you are a sweetie
