Strength Training

TUESDAY
Warmup: 70 jumping jacks
Upper: 1 set, 12 reps, 8 lb weight - *lateral raise, bicep curl, shoulder press, *tricep kickbacks - did not alternate, did all on one side, then the other. 14 modified pushups
Core: *40 seconds - plank, 25 crunches
Lower: 1 set, did not do abduction and adduction, 15 reps - *walking lunges

*Did some of these this morning. Started last night but got sidetracked in the middle of it putting kids down and never finished. Did the crunches yesterday morning after my run. So I guess last night all I did was the jumping jacks, bicep curl, shoulder press and pushups. Oh well, those are my favorites anyway. That's probably why I did them first.

Plank is getting easier.

I understand. Actually see myself doing a marathon. My goals go as follows:

Spring- Mini Tri- 2-3 of them
Fall- Olympic Tri

Spring 08- Oly Tri- 2-3 of them

Fall- Marathon

Spring 09- Half Ironman Tri

Spring 10- I am Ironman.

I have 3 years. I am enjoying the trip.

That is awsome with the excercise you go girl and rock it all offffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Thanks you guys!!! Bobby and Redneck I REALLY appreciate your encouragement. I also look forward to seeing your continued success.

Hi OHD and Pequin. I missed your posts before. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey M2M, can't wait to visit your diary again - and everyone elses....

Tri, that's an amazing plan. I can't wait to see you hit the first one.

Enjoy your weekend with your daughters at camp !! I get weepy thinking about all the years I missed out on the road for events like that but it does my heart good to see good parents doing great things with their children.

You are a classy mom Patty, I'm proud of you.

T2 I forgot to say THANK YOU for this. You are a sweetie.

I did not get to walk today. My husband went to a thing at church at 6am today called Morning Charge. It's a men's monthly breakfast. The topic was Men's Sex Drive (hopefully it taught them something about men vs women, how different we are). Thought I should let him go!!!!! :)

Thought about going back to jog at Memorial Park, but I am so tired. I've been writing a 3 page letter to the school for the past 2 hours....

Now I'm off to battle my daughter's school. I don't normally complain in here too much about my life (outside of the weight battle), but my daughter - the sweet, dear angel - has trouble learning. I think she has a mild learning disorder, someone suggested it might be a language processing problem. Anyway, at Kinder and 1st the teachers said don't worry, but I did. Now it's 2nd and she's falling behind. 3rd grade is a big testing year here in Texas and I don't think she'll pass. She has a terrible language arts teacher, no empathy, not sending home complete homework the last 4 weeks in a row. I've talked to the guidance counselor, left a message requesting an appointment for the 2nd grade AP (with no reply). The district cut the reading recovery program and after school tutoring from the schools due to lack of funds. That's nuts, we have one of the better funded districts in this country (must be that stupid new $38 million football stadium we built) - CFISD. Anyway, I've put my concerns in writing, including requesting that she be tested. A good friend who is a reading specialist teacher in the district told me to put it in writing and they have to respond and act on it. I've attached her report cards, literacy scores, and all my emails to and from her teacher. I'm trying not to attack the teacher (I have teacher friends), just trying to state the facts to get my daughter help. Wish me luck.

P.S. My other daughter (kindergartner) is a little Einstein. It's kind of scary. Just didn't want to leave her out. :)

Good luck Patty, I hope you can get the support your daughter needs. My little brother had a similar problem, and after a bit of persuading the school were great. He now has extra help twice a week, and will have extra time in his exams when they come round. My other brother is dyslexic and his college bought him a laptop to help him! I hope your little girls school will be as good. And well done with your diet and fantastic exercise plan too!

Hi Patty Cakes - just stopping by to say hello and keep up the great work. I hope your daught gets the help she needs - don't let her fall through the cracks. (you seem like a great mom - I know you won't) Have a great day!!

HI peq - I like Patty Cakes. A couple of friends have called me that. It's such a happy nickname. Thanks for the support.

Kez thanks for sharing your story and support. I hope mine works out as well.

I ran out of time to go to the school, but will stop by the copier in the AM and then go there.

I happened to get a call from a friend today who is heavily involved in school volunteering. She told me she spoke to the 2nd grade AP today and told her that I and another mom were looking to help the 2nd grade readers who are struggling. The AP said we could do it if we went to training on Oct 19. So we'd be volunteer (read: unpaid) tutors to students.

I told my friend I'd just written a letter to the same lady, but hadn't brought it in yet. I told her I'd called the AP, didn't get past the secretary, and hadn't received a call back (from two weeks ago). She told me the school is a mess, just so disorganized - that putting my concerns in writing is a good idea. It is a new school that just opened this year. Anyway, she's pretty good about buzzing in people's ears, so I know she will prepare the AP for my letter.

I've been a volunteer in the art room recently, and library and homeroom volunteer the past two years. I've never complained at the old school, so hopefully these people will understand I'm not trying to be one of those difficult parents, just trying to get some help for my dau.

Well the reading program just might be the solution. And I'd love to start it.

Luckily I work from home for my husband's business, so I have flexible hours to go to the school.

Oh Patty,
Good luck with getting this all worked out. You truly are your children's only advocate - you're doing your job to make sure they get their needs met.

That doesn't mean you're just a PITA parent bugging the school - which really, when it comes down to it, doesn't matter, you're there to make sure your kids get what they need!

There's no better fight then that!

Met with my chef friend/neighbor this afternoon. He reminds me of Mario Batali.

Anyway, I'm leaving town Fri am for a girls' weekend. It's a surprise 40th birthday party for a good friend of mine.

I'm planning Friday night appetizers and dinner. That's why I met with the chef friend. For ideas.

Dinner will be easy - pork tenderloin (the other white meat, marinate Thurs in herbs, garlic and EVOO, roast in oven); grilled vegetables (lots - tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, asparagus, red onion, yellow and orange bell peppers, the herbs, garlic, pepper, EVOO - grill it here Thurs, serve it room temp Fri night); spinach pasta salad (organic spin is avail now, with feta, tomatoes, black olives, red onion, this yummy dressing made with a good oil - make it Thurs but without the dressing, toss and serve).

So there is a little olive oil involved in each item, but it really isn't much. That's the only added fat plus low fat feta. Portion control will be the key for me, but overall well balanced.

Appetizers - we came up with some BAD ones. I need to rethink some of them. Oh and there are wineries nearby, so we are off for wine tastings on Saturday.

Heaven help my October challenge team. Maybe I should bring my scale.

I'm bringing bran flakes for both breakfasts, my running shoes and my weights, and am not going to drink like the other ladies will be. Guess that makes me the DD.

The ticker slides down........ :p

This am, after my morning walk/jog (and yes we did do some jogging!), I have a brand new low weight. Haven't seen that in almost 10 yrs.

*does the happy dance* :)

Might not see it again after this weekend - girls' weekend - but will try to keep it under control while there.

31 minutes walking, jogging. 2.35 miles. average 4.55 mph, 13:11 pace

Now I'm going to the copier and the school....

Hi M2M, thanks again for your kind words. The asst princ called me back, but I'm unimpressed so far. We'll see how it goes. I'll keep pushing.

Hi Patty!!

Hi Speedy! I started walking in March a 2-3 times per week about 20-30 minutes. Eventually upped it to 5-6 times per week 30-45 minutes, and started adding in jogging. I am not a good jogger. I think I walk almost as fast as I jog, so I'm not actually too pleased with my progress in jogging. I'd say you can try two things with jogging.

1) Jog slow (just a little faster than your walk) for as long as you can (2-7 minutes), then walk for 1-2 minutes, then jog again, etc.
2) Jog fast for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then walk until your heart rate slows down (1-3 minutes), alternate

*missing Patty Cakes already* have a great weekend!! :D:D:D:D

Thanks pequin, you are a sweetie.

Love That Ticker

Yeah, me too. Thanks. I gained one pound this weekend, but for a girls' weekend with fabulous food and wine, I think I did very well. And who knows it could be from all the salty food.

Enjoy your weekend Patty !!

Thanks T2 for checking in on me.
