Atkins Opinions

Anyone here have opinions about the Atkins or other low-carb diet? I have 100 or so pounds to lose, and though I know that learning to eat properly for all time is important, I am tempted to follow this diet for about six weeks to lose weight quickly, in combination with my exercise regimen.

I have followed Atkins before with good results, but never in combination with exercise. Since the road is so long with the huge amount of weight I have to lose, I thought I might be able to shorten the road a little this way.

Any thoughts?

Personally I have followed my own variation of the atkins diet as the high-fat high-protein approach of the original diet leave the body unable to distinguish between the fats you are consuming and the body fat to burn.

I have shaved off a bucketload of weight by combining vigorous exercise and a caloric deficit diet (high protein, low carb and minimal fats) with multivitamins and fish oil supps. I can count on one hand the number of times i have had a bowl of rice, noodles or pasta though I have bread/cereals in the morning. If I'm to have any carb its never after 4 p.m.

Low carb AND minimal fats? I'm not sure I see the value in that approach. Healthy fat is an essencial and beneficial part of our diet.

In January if i continue at the same momentum i will walk into my G.P be measured and I will have lost 10 kg since my last measurement on their scales. That is beneficial as I avoid the high-protein + high fat approach of the atkin diet. How is your body supposed to burn its fat if you are consuming high fat?

Fat doesn't make you fat, tribal.

And I know what you're going to say that people eat high amount of this stuff will get fat. While you are true, you also said, "those who eat higher amount." Fat provides 9 calories per gram, double what protein and carbs provide (4 calories per gram each). So basically, for each gram of fat you consume, you get double the calories if you were to eat the same amount in protein and/or carbs. So basically, a diet high in fat will provide you with more calories if you're not careful. However, if you are watching your calories intake, a calories deficit, no matter if the diet is high in fat, will cause weight loss.

I'm not trying to be mean, but you have no real concept of human anatomy. Your body does understand the difference between dietary fat and body fat. It's not like there's a system out there that are fat busters and if you eat some it has to go deal with that before they can go back to your body fat.

If you have literature on the web to back this up I would be interested as I read from a number of sources the criticism against the original atkins diet. Atkins I believe faced malpractice charges.

Harvard nutritionist Fred Stare said:
"The Atkins diet is nonsense.... Any book that recommends unlimited amounts of meat, butter and eggs, as this does, in my opinion is dangerous. The author who makes the suggestion is guilty of malpractice."

To the other poster see an article High Fat, Low Carbs, What's the Harm?

I never said the Atkins diet was good; I just said you were wrong when you said fat turns to fat in your body.

Derwyddon, I would be interested in any authoritative sources you can point to on the net and not claims that you did biology in the fifth grade or whenever?

Tribal - Just curious, do you track all your calories? Could you break it down and just tell us what you eat everyday?

Everyone is using words like "minimal" and "low" which means different things to different people.

Good question.

Hey tribal !

Of your ' typical ' total calories per day on supporting your " combining vigorous exercise and a caloric deficit diet ( high protein, low carb and minimal fats) with multivitamins and fish oil supps " regimen...what is your typical breakdown of macronutrients as in.....

- Total calories ( 100% ) per day ?

- " high protein " ...what % of total calories came from protein ?

- " low carb ".......what % of total calories came from carbs?

- " minimal fats ".....what % of total calories came from fats ?

One of the reasons I started dieting was because my cholestrol level was borderline high (not to mention my weight) but when I started dieting and got retested the doctor was surprised. I do log everything on one of those online websites buts its too much to regurgitate here.

Then send us a link to the site. It's not that hard. Or give Wrangell the numbers.

Since you ' log everything ' - how about just some 3 basic pieces of info.

For example, when you went on your " high protein, low carb and minimal fats " nutrition regimen, what would be a typical intake of.....

- % of calories from carbs ?

- % of calories from proteins ?

- % of calories from fats ?

And by way of comparison / benchmark, since you tracked everything from yesterday...what where those corresponding % breakdowns from your total calories yesterday ?

Wow--definitely got some conversation going here!

I understand that in order for the weight loos to be permanent, I need to re-learn how to eat properly. Since I have ao many extra pounds, would there be any harm in "tricking" by body for say, the first 50, and then slowing down and learning all the right stuff for the last 50-70?

I thought, when I embarked on my weight loss joruney, that the pounds would "fall off" at the beginning just because there were so many of them. However, my body is "recomping", which is great, but I have only lost a pound or two in 3-1/2 weeks of working out (cardio, weights) 4-5 days per week. I journal what I eat so I know there is a calorie deficit.

I am eager to see progress on the scale!!

Tribal, you are backing out without actually addressing anything anyone said to you. What about the links I sent you? What is "minimal"? What is "low"?

These are some of the links you sent :-

If I eat fat, will I get fat?

Yes, excess calorie and fat intake will allow your body to collect fat. But fat that fits within your daily calorie allowance gets burned. Some people are better able to lose body fat when they eat a little fat with each meal because fat satisfies and curbs the appetite. Fat takes longer to digest than carbohydrates and helps keep you from feeling hungry.

If I eat fat, will I increase my risk of heart disease?

The answer depends on what kind of fat you eat. For health reasons, you want to eat more unsaturated liquid fats found in plants, nuts, oil and fish rather than hard saturated fats found in meats, butter and other animal foods. When appropriately included in the diet, unsaturated fats do not elevate your risk of heart disease. Also, limit processed foods such as crackers, commercially baked goods and stick margarines that list partially hydrogenated vegetable oils among the ingredients on their food labels. Hydrogenation converts the "good" oil into harder fat, which has characteristics of saturated fats.

That is pretty much what I knew beforehand but I have not seen any of your links stating that your body is able to distinguish between consumed fat and body fat.

Green - Listen to Der. If you "trick" your body that you may just gain it all back.

Tribal - For the love of god just answer the questions or stop posting.
