Athala's 100 day cut -- Looking for abs!

So for the last couple days, every time I've wanted to screw things up, I've had to remind myself that the world will not wait for me to be done losing weight. And so that's the reason I'm starting this diary. I'm giving myself 100 days and at the end of it I want to be able to see my abs (Or at least get rid of all that nasty visceral fat).

Start of this diary; Friday, September 26, 2014.
End of this diary; (I'm yet to check the calendar)

Some stats;

Start of my journey; August 8, 2013.
Starting weight; 102.6 Kg. (On august 14 of 2013)
Current weight; 73.6 Kg (Today, Friday 26 of September 2014)

Measures; (I haven't taken new measures but there are the last ones I took)

Chest: 39 Inches. (Before when I was bigger, my stomach was the biggest problem, but now that it is smaller, my chest is the annoying one)
Waist: 34.5 Inches.
Stomach: 38.5 Inches.
Hip: 37 Inches.

Yesterday I decided I'd do a keto diet to help me with hunger a little, and today is the 'official' day 1! I have become vegan too, so the diet will be lots of nuts, avocados, and seeds, along with veggies, pretty much. So far so good!

I'd normally would refrain from posting pics, but not this time. It'll help me get motivated. :sifone:

And this is it for the intro post. I'll probably be logging food every day and post update pics once in a while.

Day 1.

I used to log food manually with pen and paper and then post the totals, but I've updated to the digital format now!

Note: I haven't adjusted the 'goals' on MFP yet, so ignore what it says at the bottom about carbs / fat and protein.

I didn't log the veggies for today, but I couldn't get many in. I really need to have them prepared before hand. For today I got an extra 200 calories on cocoa, so the total calories should be around 1500 or so.

My first priority right now is to keep losing weight for 100 days (that's goal #1) and second one is to adjust that to a good rate of weight loss (This is goal number 2). At the moment I want 1 Kg / week, and since I estimate my maintenance to be around 2500 - 3000, I'm eating around 1500. I'd assume I could get away with 2000, but I don't want to 'gamble' right now, and I can't quite make up for more calories with extra activity.

I don't really have anything scheduled as far as exercise or training goes, but I'm trying to do something every day, and so I will update as I go.

Day 2.

So today's day 2 of my cut and day 3 of starting a keto diet. I weighed at 73.0 Kg today.

I woke up pretty tired (since I'm just starting keto) and also woke up several times during the night, so my energy levels were pretty pretty low. Had some second thoughts already, but it has been only two days and you can imagine the shame that would be quitting at day two!. In my experience day 2 and 3 are the worst when on a ketogenic diet, and then it gets a bit easier.

As far as food goes, I did log in veggies for today and I could get a much more reasonable amount than yesterday. The quick added calories were 40 for cocoa on my first meal (Which I'll have to replace with tea, since it has way to many carbs for a keto diet) and I also went to the mall and got an ice cream while in there, which I believe (and hope it's not more) around 500 calories.

Now the problem with the ice cream wasn't really the calories, but the carbs and the fact it made me hungry and it will actually make me feel worse when I'm trying to enter ketosis. Family brought all kinds of bad foods to the house today, so being hungry wasn't fun. I realize that chances are I will not be perfect 100% of the time, but I can do is to get right back into the program if I do screw up, and try limit the damage, which is what I've tried to do today.

Got 40 mins of cardio to hopefully help with the extra calories of today, but it left me pretty wrecked, so other than that, no further exercise for today.

Tomorrow's day 3! and I hope to be able to 1) to manage the calories better 2) not feel so tired and 3)to be able to get both some cardio and weight training in. I need to also be watchful of the carbs and hopefully get them under 50.

So, day 3 of my cut and day 4 of keto diet. Today I weighed in at 72.3 Kg, which means I have FINALLY (I have been trying pretty much the whole year) broken the 30 Kg milestone. However this is while on a keto diet and I have also not been adding any salt to foods, so I need to drop down a little more before I can safely say I've lost 30 Kg.

Woke up tired but after a while I wasn't feeling that bad. Still feeling a bit lethargic, but now I've started to pay more attention to food and carbs, so hopefully I can adapt to ketosis soon.

For today I tried to not go over 1200 calories. I've replaced cocoa with black tea (Mostly because of the carbs) and I'll need to be careful with any veggies that aren't green ones. It's not that I can't have them, but I don't have much budget for them and if I do have them, need to plan the rest of my food accordingly. Most of the calories came from walnuts today, and I added a bit of avocado just to add a tad more calories.

On the exercise front, I got some sets for biceps, triceps, shoulders and pecs done on the morning, and got 1 hour of brisk walking later on the day. I also mowed the lawn in the afternoon (With one of those manual machines that you gotta push) to add a bit more activity. As a general rule I've tried to stay on my feet and moving as much as possible and tried to reduce the time I spent either sitting or lying down (unless I have a really good reason).

I'll try to brisk walk for 1 hour every day, and tomorrow I'll start a more structured weight training program. Most of the weight loss at the moment should be water, but I should be done losing water by now, so further weight loss hopefully will be mostly fat.

I think I will post update pics every 2 Kg. I think I need to lose about 10 kg (so that's 5 updates) and then I will re-evaluate at that point. I could possibly be done before 100 day, and If I can do that, it would be really really great!

I am no expert at all and have never tried keto diet and I know that in this diet carbs should be reduced to minimum and protein should be reduced as well. But I wanted to ask you, isn’t your protein intake a little bit too low? Please correct me if I am wrong, I am just curious if this diet requires this low protein intake.

Anyway, good luck with the diet and hoping for the great results :)

Hello Cheeselover!

You are right actually. My protein intake is indeed a bit low and something around 60 or 80 grams or even 100 grams would be better. What happens is, on a regular keto diet you would add some meat or other animal source of protein, but I've been trying to stay vegan, and so the source of protein I have is limited. Also the calories I'm aiming for are pretty low, so that further limits the amount of protein I can get (things like nuts do have a good bit of protein, but also pack a good deal of calories with them).

So doing this isn't really optimal and I'm pushing it a bit. but it's a bit of a compromise I made, since I wanted both to stay vegan and keep calories fairly low. On a regular keto diet, the protein intake would be either a 20 or 25 % of the total calories, or 0.8 - 1g per lb of LBM.

Day 4,5,6 and 7.

So on day 4 I stayed with keto for the most part of the day, however in the afternoon I was still feeling tired and lethargic and I also got symptoms of low blood sodium (You DO NOT cut salt on a keto diet. This was my own mistake), so I eventually decided to switch back to the McDougall WOE (Low fat, Starch-based vegan diet).

I ate around 3000 calories this day. Around 900 (IIRC) in the morning from fats and the rest in the afternoon from high carb foods. I should mention that it was a very abrupt transition. I also ate only in the morning and had been fasting for several hours, so when I got home in the afternoon I had the wonderful idea of drinking some diet coke (I had already made up my mind that I'm switching diets) and I got a pretty pretty pretty bad stomach ache because of that.

kind of traumatic it was, so I'm not gonna be drinking any kind of sodas in a pretty long time . :willy_nilly:

Day 5, 6 and 7 my calories have stayed between the 1500 and 1700 range. I didn't log for these days, but again, the foods are high carb - low fat stuff. The emphasis of this WOE is on starches, so most calories come from those, along with some veggies and some fruit.

I still don't have an schedule for exercise, so most of the stuff I do is not structured. Will try to sort that out sometime on the future.

Today's day 8. Will post later in the afternoon!

Day 8.

Not really much to say for today. I'm a bit sick, and I hope it wont progress to anything worse. No training for today.

I weighed at 72.4 Kg today. This is good, since this is the first time I hit this weight without being on a low carb diet.

The calories for today were around 1700. I tried to stay on 1200 since I wasn't going to train or move too much, but failed to do so. No food log for today. Tomorrow I'll try to make one.

My two biggest issues right now are that I need to start drinking more water (a lot more than I'm currently doing) and that I need to start paying attention to hunger management (drinking more water should help). I'm not a very patient person, and when I start sabotaging myself (I.e: having more calories than I wanted to), it really gets to me.

That's all for today. Take care everyone!

Day 9.

Today's day 9. I won't be logging food, but will aim for 1200 calories, excluding veggies (so in reality it would be around 1300 - 1400, perhaps a little more). Got 700 down, another 500 to go.

Might do some easy cardio later. Possibly just walking a bit. Wouldn't burn many calories but I'd do it mostly to improve my mood though. Walking helps a lot in that department.

I never imagined that the slow progress after losing most of my weight would be so frustrating. I really have a problem with trying not to obsess with weight loss anymore. I do tend to obsess quite a lot about it, and since it's a long process, even when I do my best any results will still take weeks or months whilst I'm trying to do everything perfect and see changes on a day-to-day basis.

Arrggg. I'm a lot closer to my goal than I ever was before (Even when I tried to lose weight as a child, I didn't quite make it up to this point, so this is the 'leanest' I've ever been), but ironically a lot more frustrated and impatient too! Also the fact that I've lost only a little amount of what I wanted to lose this year, and that it has taken me so long just adds even more frustration.

Damn it! :banghead::banghead:

Hopefully, and if I don't screw things up this time, I should be a lot closer or even done by the time the 100 days end.

Weight loss is a long and frustrating process, I agree. It can be incredibly hard to do everything you can and still not see the results you expect, let alone want.
It is important to learn patience though (easier said than done, I know!) but it's a long learning curve. You will get there if you keep at it. Don't lose faith, or motivation :) Keep going!
