Asheraa's Diary

Hmmm, this has been a long time coming. I've been overweight (badly so) since I was about 5. I have always been fairly fit though, going to the gym regularly, jogging etc untill about 2 years ago.

I ruptured 2 disks in my lower back at work and could no onger do the gym, yoga, dance etc that I used to do to keep fit. My stamina went down and my smoking and weight went through the roof.

I am now going to be thirty in about 11 months, and I am more unfit than ever, I have asthma from smoking, and I have never been my preferred weight.

Last week I was given the all clear from my GP to start excersizing again, so now I'm on a mission.

Over the next few months I will be hitting the gym, starting with hydrotherapy and water aerobics.

My diet is getting an overhaul next shopping day and I aim to be fit enough to start a specialized weights program by february next year (I can't go back to my old program, because of the injury to my back).

For my birthday next year I'd like to be able to give myself a present of cosmetic surgery to remove a heap of loose skin and stretchmarks that I have had since I was 8 years old, so I need to get down to at least 95 KG before I book in to the surgery.

Sooo, there are some fairly hefty goals there for someone who has only done very gentle stretching for over 2 years, but I need to do this.

Man, I'm nervouse lol.

Good for you! You are very brave to step up and make all these changes. You have definitley found the right place for support. Just take it easy. As much as you want to jump into it, you don't want to push it too hard and reinjure yourself. Hydrotherapy is a great way to start. I'm glad that you are focusing on doing things right.

Hello!

Just wanted to say Welcome!! You will find alot of support here and having a diary is wonderful so we can all keep a check on each other! I agree with 2big.. you dont want to jump right in at first and reinjure yourself.. Just take is slow until you feel comfortable enough to increase your exercise routine.

mmm, I'm having to use a lot of self control now. I've done weight lifting for years before my injury and it was so tempting when I joined my local gym today to go do some weights. I've asked the manager to suspend the weight room part of my membership for 2 months, so I don't get too tempted before i have rebuilt my stabilizer muscles to a point where I can safely do the excersizes again.

Its frustrating having to go slow, but I definately had the fear of god put in me when I injured my back. I had noticed a bit of pain but didn't realize I had done that much damage untill I woke up after work one morning and couldn't move my legs. I'm just glad I can actually do hydrotherapy and water aerobics again. Its definately taught me patience and respect for my body.

Thanks for the comments guys, I think this forum might be just what I need :)

you are definately taking some great steps to make sure you stay healthy!!! that was a great idea to limit your options so you aren't tempted!!! that's what it's like to throw out the goodies from the closet so that you don't eat all of the double stuffed oreo cookies!!!
