Are Hammer Curls More Effective Than Regular Bicep Curls?

They focus more on the forearm and the bicep peak than regular curls - I'd recommend doing both.
 
Agreed. You need both, along with barbell curls, preacher curls, and lots of heavy back work. That...will build thick biceps.

But don't neglect the tricep...for many reasons, including the fact that its about 60% of the upper arm muscle area.
