Alligatorob's Diary

However I do feel my digestion has improved with the new diet and things, I am just not sure why, too many variables...
It's been an elimination diet of sorts, except without a regulated way of reintroducing thing gradually to see how your body reacts. I'm going to guess that it was a case of too much of some things rather than straight up not being able to handle one thing. Too much processed stuff (the high-protein cereals and protein powder), too much dairy (all that yogurt) and/or too much fruit sugar. The dose makes the poison.

It was a good day, I ate on diet got good exercise and though I feel a little tired tonight I feel good. It was my first day in a long time without any gut pains, hope that lasts. Most days they are not too bad, usually worst in the morning, but nothing today. Exercise helps and this morning I did 2 hours and 30 minutes in the gym, I think that is a new high for me.

I think you are probably right Maria, and no I don't have a plan to reintroduce things, except a decision to wait until after surgery to start those changes. However on my week of vacation in Louisiana it will be hard to stick to this diet, not and eat out with friends and family.
The dose makes the poison.
Yes, one of my favorite quotes, thanks to Paracelsus, "Sola dosis facit venenum" I often say too much of anything will kill you, except maybe money, and I could be wrong about that one.

In ancient Egypt the rich were the ones getting diabetes and heart problems because they were the only ones who could afford white flour and regular portions of honey and dried fruit.

A decent day, I ate well, exercised and feel fine tonight. I have been experimenting a bit with my evening snack. It has always been the time I sat down and figure out how many calories I had left before deciding what and how much to eat, same now except the new diet has me eating a bit fewer calories during the day and not usually enough fat. So I need a high fat, low carb food that fits the diet and what I can get. Tonight I tried a concoction of coconut oil, flax seed, some unsweetened chocolate and a cup of frozen strawberries. It met my calorie and macro nutrient goals, but wasn't very good. I have been surprised to see how effective I am at eating whatever the left over is, and getting the calories/carbohydrates/protein/fat thing close. But taste sure had nothing to do with it....

Ha! Maybe some of the same is happening to day, having lots of money does not seem a sure path to happiness.

Sadly these days in some countries it's the poor that are forced to eat crappy food due to food deserts and government subsidies going to the crappiest calorie sources.

I do the same with calculating my calorie budget & macros before making my evening snack. I am usually short on fat and carbs so my go to is almonds and craisins in whatever proportion necessary to make the macros happy.

Today was a good day, ate well, put in a bit over 2 hours at the gym. Tired tonight, but feeling good otherwise.

I have been thinking about that, the healthier things I eat are not the cheapest. In our stores it's starch and highly processed foods that are cheapest, and what the poor often end up with... I feel lucky.

Almonds and craisins sound good to me! I am limited to one piece of fruit a day on my current diet. Today I got it in a Larabar, dates are the sweetener. Mostly just dates and nuts, about 210 calories.

Yesterday was a mixed day, started out well, I did a little over 2 hours in the gym and it felt good, could easily have done more but it was a busy day, had to get out. Problem was my gut started hurting in the late morning and it continued off and on into evening... It does seem to be gas and hernia related, so I am going to try cutting back on the vegetable matter I have been eating, not stop just less. Less celery and lettuce, no steamed veggies for a while and I will see what happens. I leave for Louisiana and vacation tomorrow morning and don't want to be troubled with this. This morning feels better, but mornings often do...

Steamed veggies should be easier to digest than raw. Be careful you don't drop your fiber TOO much or you might get the opposite problem.

Today was a better day, I ate well, exercised a little, and my gut was not quite as bad. Now I am anxious to get the surgery and see if I can sort out how much of the problem is hernia related. I think a lot of it is, but that maybe wishful thinking.

Tomorrow morning we fly to New Orleans and then tomorrow night we have reservations at a fancy restaurant, Tujague's (pronounced 2 Jacks) Tujague's - Historic New Orleans Restaurant & Bar . My family has been eating there for a long time. During the first world war, over 100 years ago my grandfather was assigned by the army to guard the docks in New Orleans, he and his fellow officers met regularly at Tujague's. Not sure that was the beginning, but family has been eating there at least since then. I do it about once every 20 years... I will try to be modest in what I eat, but will not feel too limited by counting calories. That will not be my only temptation, I sure there will be others. New Orleans has great food, and its kind of like going home for me. I will take care, but I will also enjoy. Tracking, exercising, and logging in will probably suffer, but I'll do my best. Really looking forward to two days of fishing as well.

Thanks LaMa, and following my rule of thumb, that "LaMa is usually right" I did have steamed spinach for lunch and plenty of lettuce today. I cut way back on celery, found on the internet that too much celery can cause digestive problems. The same did not seem true for spinach or lettuce. Less bulk than I was eating, but only cut by half maybe, not eliminated.
I hope your stomach settles & you have a wonderful vacation & catch lots of fish, Rob
Thanks Cate, I am optimistic that my stomach will not hold me back and I do plan to enjoy and hope to catch fish! I have been very lucky on recent fishing trips, I know that does not always happen, its mostly a matter of luck.

Have fun, Rob. I would love to go to New Orleans, for the music as much as anything. If I could be teleported there one day.....
Don't worry about 'reporting" to us, just enjoy xo

Yesterday was a good day, all but the Tujague's experience anyway. It seems that its under new ownership and after 160 years they decided that the menu and other things were in need of big changes. Short story is all seem to me have been for the worst, will not be going back there. But it was fun being with my brothers and friend and the wives. Made even the marginal, but over priced, food with awful service survivable. Probably helped me keep the calories down.

Not the best food yesterday, but calories were low and I feel fine, gut problems less. No exercise except for the walking. Today we are to meet at a fancy place for brunch, another day another challenge.

I have to say I am disappointed in the Covid behavior here. The French Quarter, where we are staying, is supposed to be on a 100% mask and social distancing mandate... It's spring break and the Quarter is packed with people, lots of drunk college kids. I would estimate maybe 20% of people were wearing masks, and no social distancing. Even in the restaurant our server wore a mask, but around his neck not his mouth... If I wasn't from Louisiana I'd have been shocked, but I know this place, doesn't surprise me. We are in the minority wearing our masks and being as careful as possible.

Will try to respond to folks when I have more time.

Minority or not: you´re being sensible. And seeing other people wearing masks without complaining can maybe push one or two folks over the edge who might otherwise feel embarrassed to do so because they don´t like to stand out.

I strolled into the grocery store yesterday and was midway through my shopping before realizing I didn’t have my damn mask on. I felt like an idiot and every other person was wearing a mask thankfully . Still adjusting to this pandemic I guess.
Sorry to hear about your restaurant experience! Don’t give it up completely though — those new owners won’t be in business long, and someone else will come in.

I hope the rest of your trip is awesome! Can’t wait to hear about your catch!

I had read the menu at Tujague & it all sounded really unappealing, but I wasn't going to say anything as I thought it may have been to your taste & I didn't want to offend you. I struggled to find something I would order. Hope the rest of your trip is filled with lots of fun & delicious food & hopefully some music & dancing (masked up of course). Take care, Rob xo
