Alligatorob's Diary

Another good day, and yay for the vaccine! I don't think I've ever looked forward to someone jabbing a needle into my arm as much as I do now :)

I'm really happy for you!

I've read your aticle lately and decided to buy a coconat milk, It was very funny in the shop my husband was very much suprised when I got it but I needed to read more carefull the descriprion what is inside, here is a real shit, at least what we bought, bunch of suger, prodused in the Moscow region, but we are a bit far from coconat lol

It was a good day, ate well, spent 2 hours at the gym and I feel good tonight. Never did have any reaction to the covid vaccine. I am still a bit unsure of my beef heart calorie counting, but today am probably closer to right. Doesn't really matter a lot I guess. I have been pretty successful in sticking to the new diet and I would like to think it's helping. Urges are not gone, but manageable, and digestion is not perfect, but better. Probably still too soon to know if it really is working, but I am optimistic.
Your day sounds excellent to me, Rob
Thanks Cate, I guess it was close enough to excellent!

I sure know that feeling, and will continue to feel that way until I get shot #2. However I think just getting #1 and being scheduled for #2 is a relief. I sure hope you and Cate can get yours soon.

Hey Natalya a lot of the coconut milk sold here is the same. However you can find an "unsweet" variety, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners. That is what I buy. It does not taste bad but not a very powerful taste, a little weak. Maybe the sugar, particularly if they add artificial flavoring makes a difference, don't know I have never tried anything but the unsweet variety. Look around, the unsweet might be available in Moscow, I hope so.

Not a great day, food was good and got some exercise, but I got some bad health news.

I have been having stomach pains, the real pain is lower down that the stomach, so I knew it had to be intestinal. This morning I was probing the area with pain and found a small bulge, that I was able to push back in, right at the sight of the pain. So I got to a doctor and sure enough I have a hernia! The doctor was concerned and got me into see a specialist right away, and to make a long story short now I have surgery scheduled for late March. The second surgery of my life just a few months after the first and for an unrelated problem. The good side of it is that it is not life threatening, and it may relive some of the gut issues I've been complaining about. However it is not making me feel good, I have always imagined myself healthy except for diet and weight, but I guess its not completely so. Makes me feel older...

The doctor said there was no urgency to the operation, and I have a trip to Louisiana planned for mid-March, he said it was no problem to put the surgery off until afterwards. In reality I suspect I have had this a long time, hidden by my fat. The bulge I have is still mostly hidden by sagging skin, I saw it for the first time this morning, but only after some effort... It is not big, maybe the size of a hen's egg. Before the sagging skin it could have been much better hidden by all the fat. The specialist found 2 other smaller ones, too small for me to notice. So he will actually be fixing three of the damned things in surgery... I asked and he confirmed that obesity can be the cause of hernias, so these may be well earned. And I believe it took the weight loss for them to become apparent, or for me to notice anyway...

All in all I find this kind of embarrassing and a bit depressing. Keep trying to look on the bright side, it is not life threatening, its fixable, and the fix can end up making me feel better.
I don't think I've ever seen coconut milk with sugar added in the stores...
It is here, sugar gets added to most everything in US foods...

Having something wrong with our bodies makes us feel vulnerable, Rob. I’m sure you will bounce back. Look on these things as fine tuning. You’ll be fitter & healthier with a few tweaks xo

That's perfectly normal, as unpleasant as it is. Would you have gone to the doctor if your stomach felt weird 2 years ago? Maybe what's happening is that you're paying more attention to your body so you're actually catching problems you might've overgone earlier? Finetuning, as Cate says :) If it helps: have lots of patients of varying ages with hernias in their medical history and can't remember a single one where the surgery caused problems.

Sorry to hear about the hernias Rob. I know it’s never nice to be told you have to have surgery, even if it is only minor. Try not to give yourself a hard time about it.

Sorry about your hernia Rob.

I had one discovered on an MRI about 10 years ago, but it wasn't causing much issue so I never did anything about it (especially since all the docs wanted me to lose the weight before they performed surgery). Now that I've lost a bunch of weight I can occasionally see it, but it hasn't bothered me yet. Maybe it will after I lose more.

If I ever do get it fixed that'd probably be the only time I'd seriously consider abdominoplasty since I'd be laid up 2-4 weeks already.

It might depend on the type of hernia, but tummy tucks are commonly done in conjunction with hernia repairs. Your insurance will probably only agree to pay for the hernia repair, but that'd also cover the room & anesthesia.

If you enjoy a protracted court battle, you may eventually get reimbursed for the plastic surgery too since many states mandate insurers pay for "reconstructive surgery" (and obesity is a recognized disease). There have been a number of such cases here in California ( Kaiser Ordered To Broaden Reconstructive Surgery Coverage After Class Action Trial ), but insurers still deny loose skin surgeries by default.

It was a good day, I ate well, got some exercise and feel good tonight. Went to Salt Lake today and had lunch in my favorite Utah Mexican restaurant, Home | Red Iguana I had the mole negro with turkey. Mole negro is an ancient native pre-Columbian dish, it uses chocolate without sugar or sweeteners, probably my favorite Mexican dish, Mole Negro Recipe - Oaxacan Mole Negro with Turkey | Hank Shaw. I ate nothing but the mole and turkey and don't think I did badly on calories. It was nice to have a treat.
Look on these things as fine tuning.
Thanks Cate, and I like it. Fine tuning! I was thinking of it more as trying desperately to keep an old rusty leaking boat afloat for a few more years...

Good point LaMa, it did and I didn't. When it felt bad I always just assumed it was from eating too much, no need to ask the doctor about that. The more I think about this the surer I am that the hernia have long been there. I actually recall the smallest one, the belly button hernia being diagnosed when I was about 20 years old. Did nothing about it then and had long forgotten.... The pains have gotten worse lately, maybe the high veggie diet putting more mass through the system has something to do with that, don't know. However I am pretty sure now that at least some of the digestive problems I have been complaining about and blaming on diet of late are the hernias... Will see how the surgery changes things. I am scheduled to go in March 24, shortly after I get back from vacation. My second covid shot is scheduled for March 22 and the doctor wanted to give me a couple of days to recover from that.

Thanks Err, that is all good information, I will ask my surgeon about it. I am having laparoscopic surgery, that might make it harder. However the surgeon gave me the choice and I choose laparoscopic, if it made a difference I might make a change. I am on medicare, if insurance companies are not paying for tummy tucks, I doubt they will. But now I think I will investigate a bit, do you know anything about medicare coverage?

That all sounds a lot more positive and it's great to hear!
Depending on the turkey/mole portion size I might have had a little more than 2 chips but it sounds like a very sensible and delicious choice.

A good day, except no exercise. My first day without exercise in February, so I think I am ok. Ate a few fewer veggies, and a few fewer calories than usual but did ok. Maybe not on the calories, I have been estimating the nut butters I have been eating as 3 tablespoons, today I weighed them and found based on weight my portions have been less than 2 tablespoons. Got it right today, counted fewer calories but ate about the same amount of nut butter. Just reminds me of the problems with estimation, good measures are better. For me however the error usually goes the other way. I also had a couple of small bites of a rich chocolate ice cream, first ice cream in a long time. We did homemade ice cream for the grandkids, I did a lot of the making and just could not resist a taste. Don't plan to eat any more.

Estimating size and calories for something like that is hard, and not very accurate. I think I got the turkey pretty close, but the mole is another story. No telling what went into the restaurant mole, but I know it was rich. I did not eat it all, maybe half what I was served, just what stuck to the turkey. It sure was good. The two small chips were actually appetizer, before the mole arrived. Probably should not have done that, but they were small, and just two, I left a whole lot more on the table.

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised and feel good tonight. Had some stomach issues during the early part of the day, but that has passed, ok now. Did 2 hours and 10 minutes at the gym. I also managed to stay on track with the new diet, I am getting used to it.

I'd wish I could fastforward time to see how your new diet plays out - but that would be wishing my life away and time passes so quickly anyway. Still: exciting times!

I wish I could fast forward to being at maintenance again :blush5:
Really happy for you, though Rob :)

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised a bit, and feel good tonight. In fact I felt good all day!

However I discovered that I was not measuring my nut butter correctly. I think I did pretty well up until a couple of days ago when I read the number of grams in what I thought was a tablespoon. Turns out the package label was referring to the grams in 2 tablespoons. So for the last couple of days I actually ate more calories and more fat than I logged. Discovered it tonight after starting to eat my "2 tablespoon" portion which it turns out was 4 tablespoons. I ate it, but nothing else and my calories were fine.

Calories were probably fine yesterday and the day before too, I just logged them low. And I was on the low end of the target fat range, so eating a bit more didn't hurt The nutritionist first told me that I should not have a calorie limit, that I should pay more attention to following the diet's rules and macro nutrients. In that respect I am fine. Funny how even after all this time and all my calorie counting it's still a learning process...

Thanks LaMa, so far so good. My digestion is improved, as are my energy levels. However I know those went up and down before the diet so only time will tell how well its working. I go back to the Nutritionist Thursday, we will see what she says.

Hey Cate, thanks for your nice words, and I am pretty sure maintenance is in your future. You are trying pretty hard, you got it figured out!
