Alligatorob's Diary

Just a quick post, it's 2:30 am here and I am about to get on the road for the first fishing trip. Spent yesterday walking the French Quarter and even when eating at the local restaurants was able to keep things pretty much on track, a good day. Tonight I am staying in a little fishing lodge and will be doing a second trip Tuesday, may not be able to log in until I am back in NO on Wednesday.

Back in internet range, so a quick update.

Yesterday was not my best calorie day, after a good couple of days of fishing I ate a really big fish dinner last night, the biggest meal I have eaten, probably by a factor of 2 or more, since I went on this diet almost 2 years ago. Even though the MFP app says I was under, that was only after subtracting calories for walking around the New Orleans French Quarter, and only because I set my calorie goal quite high. 2500 based on my nutritionist's advice. I can't keep eating that way, but if it is only a once in a rare while thing I will be ok.

Pictures, the biggest tuna weighed 143 lbs, only 3 less than me at last weigh in. Dinner was at GW Fins, supposedly New Orleans best seafood restaurant, and it seemed that way to me. My cousin arranged things, did not order from the menu, we gave them some of the fish we caught and they fixed it for us, can't beat your own fresh caught fish prepared by a famous chef... A once in a very rare time event.

320 to 160 same as me need to lose half my bodyweight 120 to 60. That was 2019 and now your at the gym for 2 hrs that's brilliant well done to get to that level of fitness!! Gyms are still closed where I live but I plan to also join later this year hopefully, your an inspiration!!

Yesterday was a better day. Our last full day in New Orleans, ate out twice at very nice places. Breakfast at the Camila Grill The Camellia Grill | The Most Famous Diner in NOLA a nice old diner, very much a 50s place, and it has been there since the 40s, wait staff in starched whites and bowties, was my favorite in college. And dinner at a very nice Israeli restaurant, new to me, Saba SABA . Met another cousin there, his wife is Jewish and knows the owner well, so we were treated quite well, a great last evening. I did eat more at Saba's than planned, and after dinner could not resist the bootlegged nice aged Cuban rum I was offered. However in the end I stayed on track calorie wise, so all was good. Ate a lot of things in small portions.

Off to the airport and home soon.
That dinner looks and sounds well worth investing calories in
Yes, I think it was, a real once in a very rare time event.
That tuna has a major wow factor!
Yes, it was. Biggest edible keeper I have ever caught, had sharks and goliath grouper larger, but released them. Our sharks are not edible, and the goliath grouper is endangered so no keeping those.

Hey Feefi, good to meet you, and thanks. Sounds like you are getting off on a smart journey. I hope to follow your progress. And hope your gyms can safely open soon.

Back home, got in last night. Yesterday was a good calorie day, maybe not all the best foods but I ate what I could find traveling. Exercise was limited to a lot of walking at a relatively slow pace. I did eat more on vacation than I probably should have, but not a whole lot more, and I sure enjoyed doing it! I tried but did not stick fully to the new diet my nutritionist put me on, and I feel none the worse for it. I think I am fine, and will be back on the more regular diet now. One thing I discovered was the Louisiana dried shrimp, very tasty and only 20 calories per ounce, mostly protein. They dry the smaller shrimp raw, much like some Asian's do. I had assumed that like beef jerky it would have higher calories and at least some fat per ounce, but that does not seem to be the case. Think I will get more and add them to my diet, very good on salad.
Sounds like a great trip Rob
Thanks Err, it was. Louisiana is a great place to visit, for me anyway. Its home so that feels good. The fishing is without question the best in North America (pounds of meat wise anyway), all those nutrients coming down the Mississippi draining half of North America. I brought home about 100 lbs of frozen fish, most I caught, but I purchased some local Louisiana shrimp and crawfish too. Culturally its an interesting place, real melting pot of peoples with a lot of history. And the food is amazing. New Orleans is a small city, only about 350,000 people, but with over 1,400 restaurants, cafes, etc. The competition is fierce, so if the food is not very good the restaurant does not survive. And the multi-cultural nature of the population leads to a lot of diversity, you can find pretty much any kind of ethnic foods you want, as well as many things unique to Louisiana. An easy place for me to have a great vacation.
Why are your sharks not edible, Rob?
It's a taste problem. Sharks have a unique urea-based osmoregulatory system to cope with life in saltwater, very different from other fish. The result is a lot of urea in their blood and a strong ammonia taste. Some shark species are worse than others, the ones we catch in the Northern Gulf of Mexico are particularly strong. I have eaten shark that was fine, just not one from the places I fish.

Great job navigating the treacherous waters (of vacation eating anyway).

Have you seen the tv series Treme? If so, do you think it was an accurate portrayal?

Today was a rough day. This afternoon my hernia started giving me problems and to make a long story short I ended up in the emergency room where the doctor was able to ice it and with a lot of massage and pushing get things back where they belong. Sure am glad it did not happen in Louisiana. And even happier that my surgery is scheduled for Thursday to fix the damned thing... Its funny but since losing weight I have had more health problems than ever... part of that could just be that I am paying more attention. And I am of course getting older. As a result of this thing no exercise today and came up a bit short on calories, but I am feeling better tonight. Tomorrow is another day.

Yes, I really liked it and it was quite authentic. As authentic as any TV show gets anyway. John Goodman lives in New Orleans and his wife is a Louisiana native, and Wendell Pierce (Antoine Batiste) is a New Orleans native, so the cast had at least some New Orleans connection. I particularly enjoyed the parts about the Mardi Gras Indians, I always sought them out at Mardi Gras, it was nice to see them get the attention. A lesser known aspect of Mardi Gras. So sorry you had to go to the hospital, but I'm glad you'll be getting the hernia patched up soon.

I really enjoyed Treme too (and the Wire before it, with much of the same cast and crew), but haven't had a chance to visit New Orleans yet.

Today was a better day than yesterday, hernia is under control. The doctor asked me not to exercise until some time after the surgery Thursday, and based on last night's experience I will follow those orders. I am also eating less veggie bulk and that seems to be helping with the hernia, but it is leaving me pretty hungry... Tomorrow I get my 2nd covid shot, that will be a big relief!
Oh dear, that sounds awful. Definitely a good thing you're getting surgery soon!
It is good that the surgery is soon. I did not feel good, yeah kind of awful. I find all of my recent health things a bit embarassing and confusing. I had just assumed losing weight would solve all my health problems, but instead I am having more troubles than ever. Hopefully this will be the end of the problems for a few years anyway...

You need to get to New Orleans, it is a great place to visit. Let me know if and when you plan to go, I can point you to some interesting things. Have you watched the new Showtime series "Your Honor"? It is all set and filmed in New Orleans, Bryan Cranston is the lead star. A relative of mine was involved as a local advisor and producer.
So glad you’re getting that hernia fixed on Thursday, Rob.
Not as glad as I am! Thanks Cate.

The prostate problem would've happened either way, although you might have ignored it for a dangerously long time without the weightloss. Your hernia troubles probably did get worse because of all those veggies. One pro, one con, lots more mobility...

It was a good day, another one without exercise per doctor's orders. My hernia seems to have calmed down a bit, making it to Thursday is all I need. Got my 2nd covid shot today and feel fine so far. It is a big relief to me to have it done.

Good points, actually the prostate problem had been around a while, and I was just ignoring it. Probably much the same for the hernia, though it has clearly gotten worse of late, as you say maybe the veggies. I have not eaten veggies since Saturday's problem and things feel better. Not completely sure there is a connection, but there probably is.

Today was a good day, except for the lack of exercise. I am continuing to eat higher calorie low bulk foods and that seems to be helping keep the hernia where it belongs, only a day and a half to surgery now. Hopefully after that I can go back to eating more veggies, and after healing a while back to exercise. I was more tired than usual today, maybe that was a side effect of yesterday's covid shot, maybe not, no other effects so all is well on that front.

Not exercising has me feeling more tired than usual. Not long to go! Don’t forget to ask if you should change your diet for a while after the op xo
