Alligatorob's Diary

i have found having an impromptu busy day to be one of the best dieting adjuncts.
i have to laugh....later. i'm having one of those days today. decided to fix a small plumbing problem and managed to turn it into a bigger problem.... twice. i'll write it off to learning something i never thought mattered, ....maybe in a few days.

but it's almost 2pm and i haven't really thought about breakfast yet. been too busy...!

Rob eating well and moving more is great . I think the more active we can be the better . And you are certainly ticking all the boxes for your health right now .

Yesterday was a good day, ate well, exercised and felt good most of the day. I was still tired from Saturday's moving only walked 5 km and that was hard, I also did a little swimming at the lake. Got out on the boat and jumped in, water is up to about 20 C so its not too cold, but I only did a few minutes of swimming. I need to relearn to swim, its been a while and I am not so buoyant as I used to be. I just anchor in deep water and jump in, no touching bottom. Picture after the swim:

I wonder if stepson would have expected you to be able to help him move a couple of months ago...
He did not say much about it, but I know he was surprised. He had tried to help arrange help so all I would have to do was drive, he did not expect me to do much lifting.
10 hours of manual labour! You’re a warrior Rob!!
Thanks Emily, it was a long day, but it felt good to be able to do it.

I agree, for me idle hands truly are the devils workshop. Keeping busy is not just good exercise, but diverts my mind from eating.

Thanks Petal, and you sure are right about the being active. I am trying to "tick the boxes".

Saturday we got a bunch of Kentucky Fried Chicken to feed the moving crew, just noticed this on the back of the chicken bucket. Very true for me, time was I would have eaten a bunch of it and no salad. Saturday I had one piece and carefully removed the skin and breading, but I had a salad. Not sure I'd make much of a marketing spokesman for KFC, but I could verify the slogan.

i always thought pizza was the traditional moving crew perk. the first 10 years after college i must have moved 4-5 times, but i doubt if i have it in me for another relocation... and i don't play the lottery... :)

Isn't it great that your stepson would have been really surprised that you could do so much? Even better that you can do so much.

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised and other than being tired I feel good. Did a workout at the gym and tried to find a route to the waterfalls again, and failed again. It was a really tough climb, I did 1.6 km in an hour and 25 minutes, more work than an 10 km walk but just found dead ends. Got a picture of the stream, but not the waterfalls.

That must've been so satisfying
Yes, it does feel good to be able to do things. Thanks LaMa.

Yep, we had pizza on move day one. KFC was second choice.

Yes, thanks Cate it was. Still can't seem to find a way to the waterfalls though.

Rob lovely pics of water. I do worry you are climbing in areas not suitable for it . Be careful . All the hikes we do are set out and have routes . Anything off that we should have a guide .
Sounds like a great day though . You must be totally loving your new life

What a gorgeous little stream! Does that kilometer count include doubling back or just the net distance?

I love your pics, Rob. You look so content and so normal in terms of not being overweight. You're getting in such great physical activity every day, it's really the best thing for you. I need to get more active myself!

...Got a picture of the stream, but not the waterfalls....

boy that reminds me so much of a place up in the hills outside our college we called "the Tubs". the streaming dowhill water carved out huge depressions in the rocks and if you could stand the close to freezing water, it was a blast sliding down the worn rock channels and through a series of those pools.

you have a great location to inspire walking ...!

It was a good day, ate well, exercised, and feel pretty good tonight. I did 2 different gym workouts, one was weight lifting, the other a kind of group class strength training session. However I did not get a walk in, maybe tomorrow.

Yeah, this place probably isn't suitable for the likes of me anyway. More of a steep scramble/climb than a walk. I turned back when I eyed a small boulder that looked like a suitable foothold. When I probed it with my stick it took off tumbling down the hillside and over a 15 meter or so cliff into the rocky stream. I decided I did not want to be next. None of the mountain hikes I have done near here have any kind of established route or trail, most bushwhacking, and I have never heard of a guide around here. If I drive a few miles I know there are some more established trails, I need to do that I guess. I just like the convenience of being able to walk from home, or just drive 5 min in the case of the waterfall canyon.

It is a nice stream, but so steep and rugged its hard to get to. The distance was 1.66 km total, probably half climbing that required use of hands, not a hike. I am no climber, you could probably have done it much more quickly, and maybe gotten to the waterfalls. I know the waterfalls exist, I have seen them from a distance, the water drops probably 100 meters, it would be great to get up there and see it, but maybe not possible for me. I have been asking and cannot find anyone who has actually gotten to the falls.

The water in my stream is also freezing cold, its snow melt and the snow is not far away, so the water has only been liquid for a few hours at most. The warmer it gets the higher the water, but that will be ending soon, another month and the snow will be gone. I wish it was a place I could just "walk" to.
Loving the KFC slogan. What did come first...?
You got me interested so I looked it up, here is what Wikipedia says:
"The word "salad" comes to English from the French salade of the same meaning, itself an abbreviated form of the earlier Vulgar Latin herba salata (salted greens), from the Latin salata (salted), from sal (salt). In English, the word first appears as "salad" or "sallet" in the 14th century. Salt is associated with salad because vegetables were seasoned with brine (a solution of salt in water) or salty oil-and-vinegar dressings during Roman times."
So I guess the Colonel was wrong.
Have you googled walking groups in your area, Rob?
Just did and could not find anything. But that is a good idea, I will keep on looking.
You look so content and so normal in terms of not being overweight.
Thanks Jack, and I am happy about it, but not sure content. I am still trying to figure out what it all means and how to stay here.

Not wanting to fall down a mountain sounds sensible enough. A shame you can't just bike to the start of your nearest hiking trail. I did not know that salad came from herba salata, although I should've guessed, so once again I learned something new here :)

Rob for all my mountain walks I have to drive to them . Lucky it not far but at weekends I drive from 15 mins to 30 mins to some good trails .
I do have nice walks from my house as do you so I do them mostly and then for a good hike I drive to somewhere routed .
just keep safe .
can you bring the grandkids to some of the picturesque routed hikes ? Might be fun
You are imo doing a fantastic job maintaining your weight loss . ( and still losing )

Down 1 lb this week to 179, I am happy.
A shame you can't just bike to the start of your nearest hiking trail.
That might be possible, but it would require riding on a busy highway and a lot of up and down through the mountains. I'd probably be too tired to hike at that point. I have thought about it.

That is a good idea, I will have to find one they might like.
