Alligatorob's Diary

What we call an OMG peach. It was a real trophy, I wonder if you can get a taxidermist to mount a peach. Problem is then you can't eat it.
Skinning a peach for mounting would take a real feat of knife skills but then you could still eat the inside :p
Wikipedia says it was "caused by a spike in climate normality ", but I can't figure out what that means.
Egypt depended on the Nile for everything. If it didn´t flood for a couple of years that´d ruin their agricultural system and if it was too low/muddy for boats they wouldn´t even have reliable transportation.

Down 2 lbs this week, that feels good. I am now at 264, down 56 lbs or an even 4 stone!

Petal, we have a dehydrator that's probably what we will do with the peppers. We were going to dry peaches, but it always seems like we wait until they are too juicy before picking.

Only did 8 laps on the bike today, it felt harder than yesterday and on the last one when I got to the top of the hill I was feeling a bit unsteady and so decided 8 would have to be enough. When I got on the bike I had a goal of 10 set in my head, but that will have to wait for another day. I feel good, that's what matters.

:iagree: too, Rob. Feeling good is what matters. Well done on your consistent weight-loss & your amazing determination :)

It was a mostly good day. I ate well and feel good.

I spent too much time reflecting on where I am and how far I have to go. I don't know what my goal weight should be, but my best guess is probably around 160 lbs and that's still a long ways off. I've only lost about 1/3 of the weight I need to, and I know the closer you get to goal the harder it is to lose weight. When I signed up I figured it would probably take 2 years to get to my goal, and that's probably a pretty good guess. I know I am on track, but it still seems like a long time. I need to refocus my thinking on my original and most important goal, eating right today, and let the future go. I know that, it's just hard sometimes. Oh well tomorrow is another day, I am sure I will feel better about all this.

Islam was introduced to the Maldives in 1153, it is now the official religion, apparently it is illegal to be anything else. I've never been to the Maldives, but I have been to Muslim countries in the Middle East and Indonesia. I find the religion interesting and remarkably similar to Christianity and Judaism. I don't however like the idea of an official religion or requiring anyone to practice any religion.

I agree that concentrating on the work ahead can feel daunting. Comparing your quality of life now with what it was half a year ago might help? The old Rob who could NEVER have done 8 laps on his bike may have something to say :) On the other hand: looking ahead and feeling that sense of dread could perhaps help you see what you are missing and what you might want to start incorporating into your current system to make it workable for the rest of your life.

Rob I think you are doing great and one day at a time is the way to do it . I second what LaMa says the difference in 5 months is incredible . Remember you said you can do the yard work now that the young chap used to do . You are eating healthy and not binging. I find you a real inspiration

:iagree: with LaMa & Petal. You have come such a long way, Rob, & I think, as a collective, you are an inspiration to us all. I think you are smart enough to make adjustments as you get closer to your goal weight so that it will be sustainable. I'm inclined to navel-gaze & overthink things too. We are just mere mortals after all & I don't know any perfect people. It's a natural thing to have doubts.

Thanks all, and of course you are right I am a whole lot better off now than I was a few months ago, I know that. And today is a new day and I am feeling better already. LaMa, the old Rob didn't even know he couldn't do 8 laps. I also like your idea of having the peach professionally skinned so I can both eat and mount it. I have no trophy heads or anything hanging from the wall, a peach might look good, better than a cape buffalo or elk.

I just did my 8 laps, and it was hard, maybe the hardest ride to date.

I don't know why. It seemed like my back tire spun on the gravel more than usual and that both makes it more work and shakes my balance confidence a little, particularly going up the steep parts. Maybe, I don't know why the gravel was nice and dry like most days. When I started I had 10 laps in my head, but I could soon see things were not going the way I wanted. By 5 laps I wanted to stop, but I forced myself to get to 8, and made it but that last one was a struggle. 10 will have to wait for another day.

Progress will not be linear especially when you’re in a calorie deficit. You don’t need to go everyday and if you take 1 day off, ever, at any time, you won’t lose the progress you’ve made. You could take 3 days off a week spaced out and it wouldn’t affect you negatively at all. Have you been losing weight at a slower rate since you started riding? I noticed as I built up with exercise, the weight loss wasn’t even and in the beginning it was slower while my body was adjusting. Maybe building a little muscle and strengthening the existing muscle and ligaments How long does 8 laps take you? You don’t need much to see benefits and the fact that it’s difficult once you get into it, means it’s working. Cool to see your progress so far, Rob.

10 will have to wait for another day.
Yes, indeed, since there were new problems - especially affecting your balance confidence. Deep gravel is horribly hard to ride on in any case - maybe you were unconsciously upping the speed, which gave rise to the problems this time? Truffle Monster would know, I guess. And yes, as Cate says, you are an inspiration to us all - and as bensanon (also Rob) says, it's really cool to see your progress, on and off the bike! :)

Thanks all, your support really helps.

Rob you may be right, my weight loss did slow a bit after I started riding, I had not made the connection. It would be nice to think some of that is new muscle. I am trying not to take a day off unless forced to by events, such as rain, I know myself and breaks can get longer and longer. Amy you may be right, I probably am increasing speed a little, particularly in the first few laps. I thought about it afterwards and my legs did not feel as tired as they have in the past, things are slowly getting better. Amy, it is a little confusing, I just call benasonon "the other Rob" and I agree seeing the other Rob's progress has been a real inspiration to me. He may struggle, but he's way ahead of me, I learn a lot from him. Petal when (and if) I get a peach mounted I'll post it here. Trophies from the garden could be a new thing, the vegetarian's trophies!

It was a good day, I ate well and feel good. We are madly trying to get the end of the season fruit and veggies used, I fear we will end up letting a lot of peaches go to waste. My wife took the pears we were given and boiled them down into what she calls pear butter, no sugar added just boiled down pears. Had some for dinner they tasted good. She is also working on the eggplant and peppers. I picked the pears from our trees today, they are just 2 year old trees but I got about a dozen, they sure taste good. I've been picking up the apples that are falling from our trees, but have not yet started picking. We have 2 old apple trees, one with green apples and one with red, no idea what kind they are other than the color. They do taste good.

In 990 the Ghana Empire was on the rise, expanding in what is now Mauritania. The Kingdom of Ghana was one of the most wealthy and powerful in Africa 1000 years ago. It produced gold and salt and controlled many of the trade routes though Africa and much of the trade in ivory, slaves, horses, swords, spices, silks, and even European books. The empire was also knows as an education hub. It was interesting reading for me, in the US we learn very little African history, or did when I was in school anyway, maybe that's changing.

I can see why you´re not taking breaks from biking and doing it every day instead but your legs would likely adapt more quickly if you took at least every third day off. Still: anything that keeps you motivated is better than theoretically helpful things that´ll have you give up before you get to goal. Sorry to say the difference on the scales isn´t muscle but very likely water your muscles are holding on to while getting used to the new stress. They´ll give it back up once they get used to biking and it doesn´t stagger so progress should pick up again soon.

Rob all the fruit sounds marvellous. I had some red apples from my neighbor tree they were lovely . Good work on the biking you will get there .

Just to clarify and from my own personal experience, as you increase exercise, especially if you're doing it everyday, and you get stronger, the way weight loss occurs is different. I've experienced a different appetite and cravings, different patterns of weight loss rate and when I expect to see losses on the scale, overall different feedback from my body. It's been really positive for me but it's taken awhile for benefits to build and show up.

Is pear butter spreadable?
