Alligatorob's Diary

Be nice gifts to give to people at Xmas I thought . I didn’t buy any but they look yummy . Well done on doing your laps

Mmm, peaches in brandy! Topped with cream and chopped pistachios...

Hope y'all notice that I'm saying aubergine rather than eggplant, it seems to add a whole new level of sophistication to my food log!

Kirkjubæjar Abbey, Iceland's first nunnery was founded in 1186. In the 14th century a nun named Karin was put on trial for selling her soul to the devil and was found guilty of heresy and fornication. This is a legend (most likely) and later telling of it has 2 different nuns one executed (burned at the stake) for heresy and the other fornication. The one guilty of heresy was later vindicated and flowers now bloom on her grave. The fornicator was not so fortunate.

Very posh now Rob lol . Love the story on the nuns . You seemed to have got a lot of food for your calories yesterday. Liked to see that .

Made 8 laps today, I think it might be getting easier. At least its no worse.

It did freeze last night, the earliest fall frost I know of here, global warming I guess. Now we are going to be desperately harvesting things to salvage them. Gardening is quickly ending this year.

Well done on the 8 laps, Rob. :)
Frosts already? We're still getting them so am glad I haven't planted seedlings out yet. I'm buying some today hopefully.

Global warming doesn't mean local warming everywhere always. Still: it sucks to get frost this early.
Great job on the extra lap! Just keep adding nice and slowly :)

Riding on gravel is hard! My guess is that riding will get much easier when you're on a better surface. I know you "scoped out" possible rides when you were getting the bike - what sort of roads are there to ride on round your place, and how close do you think you are to being on them?

Good luck with the rapid harvest - with getting it all in before it's frost-hit, I mean.

It was a good day, ate well and I feel good. Nice to get a new high on the bike, but those laps just seem so small they are still a bit embarrassing. On the other hand I am getting better, so starting is important.

Amy, the rides I scoped out were way to ambitious for me in my current state of unfitness, they were just wishful thinking remembering what I could do 40+ years ago. When I finally get to the top of our driveway hill it dumps out onto a very busy 4 lane highway. My original plan was to ride a few hundred yards down it to a dirt road that goes back down the hill and connects to some less used, and flat farm roads, a mixed of dirt and paved. But to get home I will have to climb a bigger hill than our driveway and part of its dirt, though not as lose as the gravel in our drive. I'll figure it out, I am sure I can, but it will take longer than I had originally envisioned. I guess I am in no great hurry, I've got the rest of my life and I'll be better off trying than not.

Petal, the peaches look like a good Christmas idea. Back when I was traveling to Italy a lot I used to buy jars of fruit called mostarda to bring homes for gifts, that picture reminds we of it.

LaMa, I always joke that any weather event, particularly unpleasant ones, must be global warming. I know climate change is not uniform warming, in fact the past year has been cooler than normal here, but that's balanced by a lot of places that are hotter. I think in general Europe has warmed more than North America, but the worldwide average that really matters is getting warmer.

Cate, I agree, this is way to early for frost and freezing. We had to pick about 40 pounds of eggplant/aubergine this morning and a bunch of peppers and tomatoes. Not sure what will become of the remaining peaches, the farmer says he wants to pick a bunch tomorrow. Once he is done we'll figure it out. Maybe a bunch more juice.

This isn't the first time I came in at 1,021 calories, maybe the third and I am running out of interesting historical events. Particularly since I've decided to cut back on the wars and assassination things. So I went to the Angel number again there was a lot of 1,021, apparently its an important number. This is a cut and paste of just a few of the things:

Angel Number 1021 is a message not to be hindered by old patterns and habits that are in need of change. Look upon new experiences with optimism as they will bring about positive effects and favorable opportunities. It also helps with achieving your goals and aspirations, and allows for the ‘old’ to be replaced with the ‘new’.
Angel Number 1021 is a message to stay positive and maintain faith and trust in your angels and the Universal Energies as your feelings, beliefs and thoughts will manifest into your reality. Keep your focus on your desires and have positive expectations, and that is what you will receive in return. Let go of any fears, doubts and worries and find joy in life in every experience and interaction.
Angel Number 1021 brings a message from your angels to ensure that what you put out to the Universe is of a positive nature. Stay on a positive path and use your natural skills, talents and abilities to their utmost for the benefit of yourself and others. Be a courier of peace, love and joy.

I'll keep all that in mind when I am putting stuff out to the universe.

Rob can you not stick your bike in the truck and drive to those flat roads and do a km or 2 there . However I know you are really wanting to tackle that hill . Congrats anyway because you are doing awesome .

There's this whole other world that I am oblivious to, including angel numbers. I love how you put a different slant on things :)
Petal just asked what I was going to ask. From memory, I think a decent bike path that you can drive to, is a long way away.

Hey Rob,

Just catching up on your diary.

You’ve made some fantastic progress! Don’t worry about pushing on in the wet; a day off does you the world of good. Your muscles grow stronger when they’re recovering not when they’re working.

Regarding the hill it’s great that you gave it a go. There’s a hill near me that I’ve referenced quite a few times here. It’s nothing special; it’s 7kms long with an average of 4%(ish). It maxes out at 11% and it completely had my number for months. I couldn’t get up it but I kept coming back. After a while I got up. It was hard, slow and I struggled but I made it up. Now it’s a cinch. I know with absolute certainty I can make it up and at a respectable pace because I didn’t give up. All you need to do is keep trying. Mark a spot and get there, don’t aim to get the whole way; in a couple of months if you can get to your half way (1/4 way, 1/2 way whatever) mark easily enough push through to the top. You just need to remember you will get there. It may not be stylish but you will get there.

Also nothing wrong with falling off. I fell off a couple of weeks ago. Fell onto some blokes front yard. I was riding with my partner, turned around to talk to her, slowed right down, didn’t think about unclipping from my pedals and keeled over

Rob... you know, you were right about those pepper plants... as soon as i picked off all the ripe (red) Cayenne peppers... now i'm seeing another round growing... thought it would be too late in the year for that.

i have about 2 dozen ghost peppers i have no idea what to do with. i could freeze some of them... right?

Never feel embarrassed about where you are - especially when you´re moving your boundaries all the time.

Just did 9 laps! I seriously considered 10, but decided not to push it. I figure I am getting close to 1 mile, and its all up and down hill on loose gravel, so I am accomplishing something. I am being careful in the loose gravel not to get up any speed, so I can't much take advantage of the coasting momentum. Something else that's new to me, my younger self went as fast as possible and eked out all the coasting momentum possible.

If the weather holds I will try putting the bike in the truck and finding a flat smooth stretch to try. It might make me feel better about the whole thing.

Flyer, my first reaction for the ghost peppers would be to call a toxic waste disposer! Seriously though with really hot peppers I usually dry them and then use the ground up peppers to sprinkle on things; yours might be too hot even for that. Safe grinding can be a problem, be careful.

Another thing I have done is put them in a bottle with vinegar and then pour or sprinkle the vinegar out as a seasoning. You can keep adding vinegar until the peppers cool off, with your ghost peppers that might be a long time. If you do that be sure and split or even chop the peppers a little bit first, you want the vinegar to get inside. Here is a link to a recipe, I never use a recipe but you might want to read it Southern Pepper Sauce Recipe - Add a Pinch I only use vinegar, not all the other stuff, and I don't boil and seal, but that may not be the best way. Mine are only aged a few weeks. Good luck with those peppers, handling and using peppers that hot is tough.

On the plants just try keeping them watered and alive, many peppers can survive your winters, some will produce all winter. Even those that don't may survive to be larger more productive plants next year. I have known people with small tree sized peppers that were several years old.

re: peppers... drying them.... geez... should have occurred to me. i even have a dehydrator .... somewhere. ...tx. this might be a bit alt-thinking, but now that i understand the basic physiology involved, other than hot peppers, i can't think of another avenue to that sensation that does not involve physical injury. some might even consider it therapeutic...?

It was a good day, I ate well and feel good, and good about it!

Cate, the Angel Number thing is new to me too. I am not superstitious and don't believe any of that stuff, but it doesn't keep me from having fun with it. I am a sucker for a good fortune teller at the fair. All for fun, I don't believe in it any more than Mickey Mouse.

We racked the mash wine for the first time, got 9 gallons in carboys now. With the juice wine we have a total of 16 gallons, I sure hope its drinkable. I had a first glass, the mash wine right out of the fermented. Peach wine is supposed to age for a year, this glass aged 15 minutes. It wasn't terrible, that's about the best I could have hoped for at this point. Peach wine does not have a lot of peach flavor, some, but not so much as you'd think.

I checked the peaches and it seems they mostly survived the freeze, so we have a few more days of peaches, the latest variety is just now getting fully ripe. I picked a couple of peaches for lunch, one was the largest peach I think I have ever seen, more like grapefruit size. The locals don't pick the big peaches, they say that the pits are likely to split making the peach bitter. This one was not at all, it turned out to be one of the juiceyist sweetest peaches I have ever eaten, and a lot of it. What we call an OMG peach. It was a real trophy, I wonder if you can get a taxidermist to mount a peach. Problem is then you can't eat it.

1090 BC was known in Egypt as the year of the hyenas; Ramesses XI was pharaoh. It was a catastrophic year, the Nile flows dropped significantly leading to famine and chaos that lasted about 10 years. Egypt lost control of Nubia as a result, and went into a long decline. I have not been able to figure out what caused this, Wikipedia says it was "caused by a spike in climate normality ", but I can't figure out what that means.

I know my friend uses his dehydrator for his apples so should work well on peppers.

Rob glad the frost didn't kill the peaches and the omg peach sounds yummy.
Well done on increasing the laps. Good for you and hooray for sticking with it.
