Alligatorob's Diary

I believe comets were much more visible historically than they are today, all of our artificial light makes them hard to see.
Very true, sadly. If only because all that light beaming/reflecting upwards is wasted energy. I always enjoyed looking at the stars as a kid but here in Vienna I haven´t got a chance. Apart from that: as long as you´re biking every day and you´re feeling it in your legs maybe don´t add another lap tomorrow. Give your tendons some time to adapt so they won´t start hurting you. If you do want to keep progressing maybe add another lap some hours later.

Looking at the stars is something else up where we live. We had a group of Tokyo uni students on an indigenous cultural exchange come up to our land many years ago when we ran a pub-(it's a long story). They were absolutely gobsmacked when they looked up at the night sky. It's not something I take for granted. The stars are amazing!

DId my ride a little early today, its supposed to start raining soon. Actually it is already sprinkling.

LaMa I took your advice and quit after 7 laps, if it doesn't start raining I may try for a few more this afternoon.

I kind of doubt I can ride tomorrow, it is supposed to be raining and storming pretty good. Guess I will wait and see.

The picture is of quail in the yard, they are eating from some of the fallen sunflowers. We don't have the exotic bird list Cate does, but we do have lots of wild quail. They blend in well with our gravel, which I am sure they like, but it makes them hard to see in this picture, I can count 8, by looking real hard.quail 1 .jpg

They´re so cute! I can´t see quail without thinking of my old chemistry professor though, who drove one of our field work mini vans back in another life and would sometimes suddenly veer off course trying to hit one of those little dudes because he liked eating them. Never succeeded, thankfully, but got us rather close to an unsecured ravine once or twice.

Tried and failed. I had intended to follow LaMa's advice and just take a couple of more laps after resting. But I got over confident, after the first one I was feeling good and decided to give the hill a shot. I got almost to the top, but then the loose gravel and my slowness combined to cost me my balance and I fell. Nothing hurt but my pride, now I know I need to be in a little better shape. If I can hit that same spot with a little more speed I am sure I'll make it.

After falling I took one more lap just to get my confidence back a bit, so I had a total of 9 laps and a good run up the hill today, in two events. I am happy with that.

Tomorrow it's supposed to be pretty stormy so I'll probably have to take a day off and then get back to my micro-workouts when it clears up.

I like your puzzle-picture of the quails! I thought maybe there were ten?

:iagree: totally with Cate - this, the seven laps, then the extra run up the hill, and fall and one more lap to show the gravel who's boss - that's not failure! This is what success looks like in action!
Can't do better than echo her words: Go, you! :)

That life lesson we all learned from a very early age comes to mind. When you fall down, just get back up and keep going. Great job, Rob!

It was a good day, except for the fall. I am feeling a few bruises and a little sore, but nothing that won't heal soon. I'll get up that hill, but will wait until I am in a little better shape before I try again. Thanks all for your encouragement, it is appreciated. Cate thanks; you are right, just a few months ago I would not have dreamed of attempting that hill on a bike, now I know I can do it.

A friend traded us some of here pears from her tree for some of our peaches today. The pears sure were good, but after eating 3 I was surprised to see how many calories they have. They sure don't seem like more calories than a peach, maybe I am under estimating the peaches. Oh well, I know fruit is good for me, if I miss the calories a little because of peaches or pears no harm done.

Arnald became the first Bishop of Greenland in 1124. Greenland had been settled by Icelanders lead by Erik the Red in 986 and the Icelanders survived there about 500 years. My father always told me that my middle name, Eric, was for Erik the Red. It's possible, though we have no Danish or Icelandic heritage that I know of my father was stationed at Thule Air Base not long before I was born, so he may have had Greenland on the mind. Any way it makes a good story, being named for a famous Viking.

Rob I really hope you are not aching this morning when you wake. Ouch ouch having a fall. But you are doing super well now and you will get that hill yet.
I think pears a good for you and very filling and full of fibre so enjoy .

So I take it you have a bit of red hair or as we say gruaige rua as gaeilge . ( red hair in Irish ) . That's the Irish roots in you .

Even if you did take in a few more calories with the peaches than you thought, no harm done! Because obviously what you're eating is working for you, and a few more calories might mean you're easing closer to maintenance-level, as well, so that will be no trouble at all when you get there!

It was a good day, ate well and I feel good.

I was tempted to get back on the bike for a few laps today but it was raining pretty hard. I still could have done it, but it wouldn't have been fun so I rested. Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow.

Tonight was a bit of a challenge, we ate with friends and someone made up a plate for me (without asking or me knowing). Fortunately he knew I was on a diet so he was careful in what he gave me. The calories are just WAGs, but probably pretty close. I managed to resist alcohol, that helped.

1045 was a busy year at the Vatican; Pope Sylvester III was deposed with Pope Benedict IX replacing him. Pope Benedict then resigned, apparently in exchange for a bribe and Pope Gregory VI became the 148th pope, all less than 1 years time. Gregory only lasted until the next year when he advocated after admitting to purchasing the papacy.

That's real sweet, making a diet plate for you like that.
Gregory had to abdicate for buying his way in? I thought that was par for the course at the time :p I guess being too obvious about it is bad for the Vatican's image.

Rob I thought of you yesterday when I was in a shop that sells fancy goods . An idea for next years peaches maybe

Did my 7 laps on the bike this morning. It was still spitting a little cold rain, but not too bad. They seemed harder than on Friday, but I got em done.

Petal, peaches in brandy, that does look good!
