Alligatorob's Diary

270, down 4 lbs this week! I am happy!!
Thanks to all on the forum for your support, I could not have done this alone!
I can hear & feel your happiness :D
Rob, you are such a supportive member of the forum. The forum is the sum of all the parts & the people who contribute in their own way. You give as much as you get & we all appreciate that effort.
50 lbs lost in 4 months is bloody marvellous!

Thanks for your kind words Cate, maybe kinder than deserved. I'd like to think the sum of my parts are more positive here than not. However I am really here for me, I get more than I give.

It was a travel day, so eating was a challenge, but I think I did alright. After dinner I saw that I was under my 1,000 calorie goal for the day, so I went to the little store in the hotel. Eating selection was pretty grim, then I saw a small bottle of Chardonnay. I had to buy and drink it to stay on track, it was tough but I forced myself!

On cereal, I normally eat grapenuts in my yogurt, I just add a little filling the empty space at the top of the container. Not sure how widely known grapenuts are, they are a small crunch cereal thing. No sugar added. The calories are similar to the sugary raisin bran I had the other day, but they sure are a lot more filling. I guess my lesson learned is to stick to no sugar added cereal, not for the calories, but for the bulk. I actually like the taste of the no sugar cereal better. I do plan to try the oats soaked overnight Cate suggested, they sound like a good idea.

The Magna Carta was agreed to by King John in 1215. He soon repudiated it and the Pope soon annulled it. None the less it kept coming back and marks a significant step in the development of the democracies many of us enjoy living under today.

My god Rob 4 lbs is phenomenal. We give you the crown of slimmer of the week lol. Congratulations and I concur with all Cate said. You seem to have time for everyone . Well done you and hope you have a great week.

If you fear your mental agility is declining the number one thing that helps (statistically) is regular exercise, ideally combined with mental stimulation. Going for walks in high-input surroundings, dancing, playing with kids, that sort of thing. Other things that might help: learning an instrument or a new language.

270 and fifty pounds down! Absolutely marvellous! And not just the weight, but the general feeling good all round - terrific, Rob! :D

(And so was the Magna Carta!)

Just logged in from the airport, my flight is boarding soon. It has been a kind of hard food day, there was nothing low cal available for breakfast so I skipped it. Went to lunch at a kind of Asian deli, no low cal choices. I ordered a kind of rice and beef thing and got them to give me white rice. I only ate about 1/3 of what was served, but I am sure it had enough calories to make up for no breakfast...........will take a WAG at the calories later. Not likely to get fed on the flight so dinner will be a challenge as well. Doing my best to stay on track.

Well I got home late without eating again. I had a couple of peaches to stave off the hunger, tomorrow will be back to more normal. The lunch calories are just a WAG, could easily be hundreds of calories off. All in all it was not my best day, but I got by. I need a better travel strategy for these long one day trips. And to be better prepared, I should have taken so easy healthy snacks.

Thursday

breakfast
none

Lunch
white rice 300 or so
beef 500 a real WAG

dinner
none

snack

2 peaches 98

total probably under 1,000 calories, but who knows.

1,000 was the first Christian calendar based millennium, the internet didn't crash on that one either.

Rob I think you will find the rice and beef were not so bad and you ate 1/3. You might recall we talked about preparing on one of the other diaries for these days. Get a little cooler bag and pop in your banana yoghurt, peaches , cheese , crackers . Etc etc .
Alternatively most places will adapt a dish for you I find when you ask.
Anyway you don't travel too often so don't fret. I'm more concerned you skipped meals and were hungry.

Are you not ravenous on 1000 calories a day?
No, not if I eat enough fruit and vegetable fiber. Yesterday skipping breakfast and dinner I did feel pretty ravenous, but most days not. I do still have cravings for things, sometimes strong ones, but that's different from hunger.

Petal is right, skipping meals is not a good idea for me. Yesterday was unique, I just choose to skip meals rather than eat something not on my diet. A little pre-planning would have kept me out of that situation, a lesson learned.

What impresses me is that you skipped the meals . I would have sure given in as I’m a horrible person when hungry and I get very shaky and weak . I imagine I eat every few hours tbh. I guess I eat at approx 8, 11, between 1.30 and 3.30 , 6 ish then a small snack up to 9 pm .

Rob I crave things too . The other night I went to the German supermarket and gazed at the desserts and ice creams . Didn’t give in !!! Lol

I would have been the same back in 2007 when I was on a very strict diet for 6 months. If it wasn't on my diet I just didn't eat it. I don't think I could do that now. I used to have to be very well organised with my food. Maybe have shakes (& a shaker) that you can take with you when you travel, Rob.

Thanks Petal, Cate and LaMa, good advice. I will remember to be more prepared next trip. Though I am really trying to cut back my business travel, to nothing within a year or so. I used to travel a whole lot, I am a six million miler on Delta Airlines, that means I have flown a total of more than 6 million miles with them alone. Those days are over now, and I am happy about that.

It was a good day, my wife wanted to go out to dinner and she wanted Mexican, so we went. I found a better taco salad than usual, no dressing and the beans were at the bottom so I could avoid them. Most of the calories I had were in the chicken and it was pretty lean.

Ate the first apple off of one of our trees today, I've been trying bites but until today's they were too sour to eat. We have 2 old apple trees, one red and one green, its the red that is starting to get ripe. Problem is we are just midway with the peaches and keeping up with them is near impossible. Guess we will try to juice as many as possible this weekend. And the farmer still has lots of really nice cantaloupe. A fruit excess is a good problem to have, in a couple of months or so I'll really miss it.

Fall is definitely in the air, built the first fire in the wood stove this morning. Going to have to find some firewood, last year I burned almost 2 cord.

In 1179 the Mayan city of Chichen Itza was sacked and burned by a Mayapan King. Proving that the Kings and warlords in the Americas were no better behaved than else where in the world. Fortunately many of the pyramids and other ancient structures in Chichen Itza still survive, and is a great place to visit today.

Chichen itza sounds like a nice place indeed.
Rob well done on your food choices sounds really good.
We had no apples this year weirdly . Our trees needs to be pruned badly though. How many peach trees do you have ? Can you not sell your peaches at local farmer markets ? It's such a shame it's one thing we can't get here is really nice fresh juicy peaches . Might hit lucky an odd time but it's not worth spending the money to find out .
Rob have you tried to freeze the peaches ? I had a look and it seems very easy to do. Also the recipes I saw while reading have me craving some .

I really enjoyed visiting the Chichen Itza when I went to Mexico :) well done on the calorie intake. Saving them for your evening meal makes it taste so much better.

 Avoiding beans??? Beans are life! Unless they're cooked with a ton of lard, that is.
Beans in a taco salad are usually refried beans, about 50% lard I suspect. That's why they taste so good.

The farmer takes all of the "marketable" peaches and sells them, he leaves behind only the ones that are too big, too small, too ripe, too green, or that have fallen to the ground. But that amounts to about half the total peaches, so we get a lot. Yesterday we picked up about 2 bushel from the ground, and only got a small part of what was there. Most of them are fine ripe peaches, but once on the ground illegal to sell. We have 108 trees, that's a lot of left over peaches, my guess is over a ton if we got them all. We are going to freeze some of the ones we got yesterday. This weekend I expect we will get 10 gallons or so of juice. Our freezer is getting full of peaches and peach juice. I am thinking of trying to ferment it to peach wine, I have made grape and cherry wine (with mixed success), never peach but it's worth a try. Wish I could give you some of them, we have given a lot away, I even carried a bunch on the plane to give away in California this week. I don't know a lot about growing peaches, not sure why you can't grow them in Ireland. They did not grow in Florida either, not enough cold weather I think.

I actually know people who grow them in green houses so I guess we could but I imagine in the garden we would not succeed . Not enough sunshine . I might have a google .

I have a friend in uk who has sown olive trees and a grape vine . I’m not sure how he is getting on with them . I must ask .
