Alligatorob's Diary

Stone crabs are one of the few seafood things you can catch without killing the prey. You are only allowed to keep claws above a certain size, you have to snap them off and release the crab. The crabs then regrow the claws and you can do it again. I know it works, I caught a lot of big crabs with smaller regrowing claws. Not that I don't do a lot of fishing that's more of the the filet and release variety, but this makes some people like the idea of stone crabs better. Stone crab claws are one of my very favorite foods, not however available now that we have moved to Utah.

Yes, though it is about 5 years old. I used to catch stone crabs in winter, that is one of my nicer ones along with me.
ah... thought that's what it was. i "catch" them here in town occasionally. great tasting is an understatement!

It was a good day. We have a lot of fresh veggies and fruit we are trying to get eaten before leaving for Oregon Saturday morning. Result is I ate a lot of food today, but not a lot of calories. I had the snack of bread and cheese to try and bring my total up to over 1,000.

The cucumber plants we put in seem to be producing acorn squash. I like the acorn squash, but miss the cucumbers. We do have a couple of different cucumber plants that are just starting to bloom, can't wait to see what they produce.

Richard the Lionhearted was born in 1157. He spent most of his time as king fighting what seemed to me to pointless wars in France and on even more pointless crusades to the Holyland rather than staying home and governing England. However for some reason he is remembered as a hero. When he was crowned a number of Jewish leaders tried to give him gifts, but they were stripped and flogged for their generosity. Another reason to question his legacy. One a little positive story I read about him, he was apparently killed by a crossbowman while attacking a virtually undefended castle, he was arrogantly walking around ignoring the few shots from defenders when hit. The wound was not immediately fatal and he ordered that the crossbowman who shot him be captured and brought to him. When he was Richard discovered the crossbowman was actually just a boy. The boy told Richard that he killed him because Richard had killed the boy's father and brothers. Richard then forgave the boy and ordered that he be released and given 100 shillings. Richard died a short time later of gangrene from his wound.

He was also once imprisoned for months near where I live now, waiting to for his (massive) ransom to be delivered. Most ancient "heroes" were pretty gross when you read up on them today.

Seafood that vegetarians can maybe eat? Oooohhh... I'm most intrigued! :beerchug:

(I don't live anywhere near where these helpful and generous crustaceans hang out, alas, so I'll never get around to actually testing this idea out, and maybe on learning more I'd decide that I couldn't do it after all, but still, just as a possibility - interesting!)

Amy, I imagine there are other crabs in the world that are harvested in the same way. Any bottom dwelling crab that has large pincers and a small body would be a candidate. When I was in the Philippines I saw crabs in a market that looked a lot like stone crabs, but they were whole, not just the claws.

It was a good enough day, I craved food a lot, but didn't come close to overeating. I suppose I will be fighting those cravings a long time, some days are better than others.

We leave early tomorrow morning for Oregon, we'll be gone until Thursday. I will try to stay on diet as much as possible, and to log in and post when I can. We will be with my brother and his family, its likely to be a big nonstop party, so there will be lots to resist.

In 1295 Marco Polo returned from his 24 year trip to China (makes my Oregon trip seem pretty trivial). Marco was not the first European to travel to China, there were Roman Embassies in China more than 1,000 years earlier, but he was the first to write a book about it. There is little doubt he wrote the book, its less clear that he actually made the trip. He is also the namesake of my grandkids favorite swimming pool game.

Hey Rob, thanks for stopping by and your nice words, it helps me feel better about things.
Perhaps have some jerky ready to go.
Good idea! I bought some after Cate suggested it and have been snacking on it since. Jerky is a good way to put down a hunger pang without eating too much.

Hope you have a great trip! You've been so consistent ever since you started I think you can get through 5 days of family vacation.

Enjoy your trip, Rob. I'm glad you like the jerky you bought. My delivery arrived this week. I must put a small ziplock bag in my handbag & golf bag! It's such a handy, filling snack :)

Up earlier than others so I took the time to try and add up yesterday's calories. More than I would have eaten at home, but not terrible for being on the road. I tried to only order the lowest calorie things on the menu. The calories are of course just WAGs, but I think are close.

I think most would have the same view as me; don’t eat anything that harms the animal. Having your arms ripped off regardless of whether they grow back would certainly do some harm.

Please note by the way everyone I am not criticising the practice here; I don’t know anywhere near enough about it to even possibly think about one day maybe criticising. Just making a point that most vegetarians still wouldn’t be interested.

I’ll also point out that I catch and release most but I keep some of the “pest” species like Trumpeter (shitties) for dog food when I go fishing.

They really call them that? That would amuse me wayy too much :rotflmao:

Yep. They’re the sh*tty fish that get in the way of the good fish and make fishing impossible. When they hit they hit in the thousands. It’s like trying to catch a cat at a greyhound track.

Where I fish mainly there are 3 major pests; trumpeters, blowfish and dolphins.

Another vacation day, I didn't do too badly, more calories than at home, but not too many, I am happy. Some of the calories are just WAGs, but I think the total is not bad.

i have nothing against jerky... i make fish jerky every so often. what you have to watch is what a "little bit" is. beef is a little more dense, but fish loses ~90% of its weight when you go from fresh fish to jerky. 2 oz of jerky is about the same as eating a lb of fresh beef/ fish. you typically take in a lot of salt(s) too.

ok... i don't make beef jerky that much, but looking it up, it states that beef loses 1/2 to 2/3 of its weight. i swear it was more, but again, i don't make that very often. i'll still stick with the 90% figure on fish. a number of times people gave me some off the boat and thought i ripped them off when i gave them back what they thought was so little.

Yesterday was a good day, managed my eating pretty well. Drank a bit less beer. As with other days on the trip some of my calories are just best guesses, but hopefully not too far off.

Tonight we eat in a nice Basque restaurant, probably will have more than just the salad, but will try to keep the calories down.

Excellent work Rob. You say you’re impressed with my exercise but I’m very impressed with your diet. The planning, self restraint and patience that’s required to do what you’re doing is very impressive!

I like the new profile pic! And what do you mean by WAGS?
