Alligatorob's Diary

It was a good day, I ate well and feel good. No exercise, the weather was awful cold, snow and wind, guess that's my excuse. I got a call from an old client who really wants to to go to China, for a 1 day meeting. My first reaction was to say no, but they are really trying to convince me. It's something I know a lot about and worked on for a long time, so I can see the logic, but I'm trying to get retired. I have not made a long international trip in a while, guess I might do it, we'll see. I've never been to China. That would be a real diet challenge, the Chinese are great hosts, but expect you to eat and drink a lot. And I am not sure I even want to go.
walking is not only good for the heart but for the head so even if not as much a calorie burner as the bike it will do wonders for your health
Thanks Petal, LaMa, Jack, Cate and Liza, I am already planning my next, and more interesting walk, hopefully the weather is better tomorrow.
I don't care about the outcome of any sports event - but I do enjoy seeing people get enthusiastic
And thanks to y'all for recognizing my sports thing, I don't really get enthusiastic about sports a lot, but this one I did. I suspect Jack is one of the few other American football fans in this group.
Go the Saints!
In Louisiana that would be Geaux Saints! Urban Dictionary: Geaux

That's great. it's nice that a whole new brand of activity has opened up for you! Maybe in the summer swimming will open up to me inspired by Cate!

Figuring out whether or not you really WANT to fly to China sounds like the first step :) Although to be fair: one day there can´t ruin your progress completely. Yay for more and more interesting walks!

Well if you go Rob I hope you go for more than a day and sight see. It’s an opportunity . If you fancy it . Also the Chinese can eat extremely healthy . It’s the take away Chinese here that serve the most unhealthiest food ever !
Have a good think about it.

Lisa, LaMa, Petal, Amy, and Bflat, thanks so much your encouragement really helps.

Thanks Petal and others who commented on the China trip, I took one step closer to committing, first I said no I could not do it on such short notice, so they moved the date back to after Chinese New Year, then I complained about the long flights and they offered a business class ticket, so maybe I will go. Unfortunately I will not be able to spend any sightseeing time, maybe I can scope things out for return as a tourist one day. I hope the food is healthy, I am sure I can find something.

Instead of history I thought I'd talk about the 23 and me DNA report I just got today. Vic gave us her results a while back and it got me interested. Actually I already had the kit, Vic's post just gave me the push to send it in. Turns out I am 48% British & Irish, they did not separate them, 20% French & German, 10% Scandinavian, and a bunch of cats and dogs, like 0.4% Finnish, 0.6% Italian, and 0.5% Western Asian & North African. There were also some broad categories, mostly Northern European so those numbers don't add up to 100%. No big surprises to me, I did not know about the Scandinavian, and I kind of expected some Native American, based on family myths, but have none. Some interesting tidbits like I have 91% more Neanderthal DNA than average, and apparently I share some DNA with Niall of the Nine Hostages. According to Wikipedia Niall may or may not have existed, and if he did he may or may not have been an Irish King in the 4th or 5th century. I am not sure what it means to have descended from someone who may not have existed. I find the DNA thing interesting.

DNA tests are questionable, I would ignore anything under 1% at least.

Best to take 2 or 3 test from different companies, the results will most often not be the same.

I am sure you are right, when I looked at the connections it showed to my known cousins there was a lot of variability. Seems I share somewhere between 5% and 15% of my DNA with first cousins, that doesn't sound right. However I kind of like thinking I am related to an Irish King, even if 1,500 years dead, another test probably would burst that bubble.

Considering your amazing weight loss this last 10 months I am officially calling you and recognizing you as the Irish King.

All hail the King!!!!!

Let´s just crown you alligator king, how´s that? At the moment these kinds of tests are a bit like reading your horrorscope in the daily paper whereas your link to alligators is a lot more recent and confirmed. Besides: I like the idea of having a king around as long as I´m not a subject.

How interesting Rob that you have done that test . I am currently investigating some ancestry and have been in contact with a lady In Tennessee . We have found a common link but I’m not sure if we will get much further than that and in fact the link is with my kids so could be either my husband or me . The kids did their dna test I have not . But I’m enjoying the research as they have no interest other than the fact they are Irish and Scottish . But I love it and will get mine done too .

Rob, I love to hear about the walking. Fantastic that you feel good enough with your feet and legs. Awesome weight loss progress too!

i've listened to this guy before... he presents a very interesting, and convincingly true view of life in China. i believe he is married to a Chinese woman.

I’m pretty sure I am 100% Irish, but those DNA tests are really interesting.

Congrats on the 90 pounds down. And you should definitely go to China.
