Advice needed on getting back into the fitness industry after 5 years!

Hi all,

Pookie here. I'm a qualified personal trainer from Melbourne Australia with about a year of experience as a mobile trainer, but haven't worked in the field for a number of years (while completing a degree in Psychology and Philosophy). At the moment I'm looking to get back into the fitness industry, either as a trainer or a fitness instructor, and thought I'd seek out some advice. I have a few questions, any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. What are the best online resources to refresh one's knowledge of exercise techniques, training regimens, dietary advice, basic physiology, trends in fitness and latest fashions/crazes etc (all the stuff a good trainer should know!)?

2. (Australia specific) Is it essential to register with Fitness Australia in order to work?

3. (Melbourne specific) Anyone know of any gyms or PT companies that are looking for staff?

I'll posted this in the new member section of this forum as well.

Thanks,

Pookie.

1. No freaking clue. But if you've been taking care of your own fitness, I would think that most of the things you need to know about diet and training should already seem rather commonsense to you. Regarding fitness trends (read: fads), who cares? They'll get clients in your door quickly, sure, but they'll also leave clients disillusioned and walking out your door again quickly. Don't bother learning what's fancy, learn what works, unless you want to add to the long list of trainers who give all of us a bad name. Just reading the stickies on these forums will give you a wealth of quality information.

2. You don't need to be registered with Fitness Australia specifically, but you do need to be registered with some such organisation. There's a couple others I've heard of, but can't remember their names.

I don't live in Melbourne, so I can't answer the third Q.

ptonthenet.com is a great resource - well worth the investment.

hey Pookie - once you decide on your certification pathway, the association usually has a great resource library that you can buy into. That being said, is a great site for getting the most up to date books and materials. Also, pponline.co.uk in the UK is another awesome resource..they usually have a promo to sign up., something like $2 and you get access to all of their archives and journals.
