Ab workouts...

... I don't do any, neither at the gym nor at home

I'd like to but I need to find an exercise that inspires me. No room for any kind of bench which is my main problem, have to do it in the living room whereupon I get mauled by the cat

What do you guys do? And how much?

I'm doing the workouts in "New Rules of Lifting" and it has a two point stance on the subject:

1. Stabilization, coordination and balance. For this, moves that require effort to stay in place: Swiss-ball lateral rolls (fiendishly hard), supine hip extensions w/ and w/o leg curl.
2. Strengthening through flexion: swiss-ball crunches, reverse crunches, incline reverse crunches, russian twists.

Shouldn't you exercise both your back AND your stomach though?

Yes.

-But not at the same time.

The back needs to be able to take a load before the rest. If you already work the back, you can feel safe moving forward. Just do not do only ab work and leave the spinal region undeveloped.
