ab questions

ive been going to the gym steadily for about 5 months now, and i'm satisfied with everything but my ab routine. I want toned, flat, washboard abs, but the more i work mine, the more they take a ) shape, sticking out on top and bottom, and tucking in in the middle. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Exercises? how often i should be working my abs? anything would be greatly appreciated...
