A fat man and a marathon (part II)

Somehow I dragged my ass out of bed this morning. Took awhile to wake up though, so I just ran 3 miles (12:38 pace) instead of 4.

This morning my mom says, "I read yesterday that getting less than 7 hours of sleep a night is bad for your health."

"Yeah, well I read that running is basically like the best medicine on earth, so I guess it's a wash."

Kinda destroys your self perception when your getting passed by grandmas and 6-year old kids. Damn, today I realized I HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.

I hear ya!!!

Last year I got passed by a 78 year old granny!! We were keeping pace for a while because both of our hips were hurting. I'm was 34!! Half her age.

I dusted her the last 2 miles, not even sure she finished.... she asked me to wait up for her but I could not stop moving due to the pain that it took to restart after stopping.

I plan on being middle of the pack this year. This will be my 4th consecutive half marathon in October. I usually finish between 3:45-3:55. This year, I want to finish in 3:15 or faster. It's hard work being out there so long.

I look forward to seeing you do your half marathon at the end of the month! I hope your shins are better, shin pain cripples me every time if I don't warm up good enough.

Go Marathon Man!!! Whoo hoo!!

Turns out my mom was right. I get off work at 4 all jacked up to try run/walking my first 12 miler. I even eat 2 powerbars on the way home (500 calories worth!) so I'd have plenty of energy. Then I make the mistake of checking my facebook first, then next thing I know I wake up and it's 8:30!

I'm leaving to go back to work in an hour so I totally missed my long run and now I'm going to have trouble hitting my mileage goals again. Unless I can run 26 miles over my BUSY weekend. Oh well. Just keep trucking and learn my lesson that I can't be a push over at work. I told them I wanted to work less in May, but someone had to fill all the open shifts and I'm broke, so of course I caved. BUT NOT THIS TIME! I told them June is going to be no more than 50 hours a week. That means I'll be broke, but I gotta prioritize!

Awesome job on the half-marathons. I'm getting nervous about mine. I know if I train well I can run my goal of 13 minute pace, but it's only like 3 weeks away! AHHHHHHHHHH!

As for the shin pain. Are you sure you're in the right shoes? I was limping along running 14 minute miles and still getting really tight in my shins. I thought it was just the extra weight I put back on, but then I finally went to a good shoe store and the guy glanced at my feet with my socks on from 10 feet away and was like, "Yeah, you don't have high arches." Got new shoes and now they're COMPLETELY GONE. I still worry a bit the first mile, but I've done about 5 runs in them now with no problems.

Here's to running all summer and shedding pounds one mile at a time!

13.1 miles this morning!

First 9 miles I was taking it easy and averaging a 13:20 pace, with some walking. I thought it was cake. Then the last 4 miles became HELL. My legs would not run for more than like 20 seconds before I wanted to stop. I kept checking my watch and made sure that I pushed myself to hit my sub 3 hour goal.

2 hours 59 minutes 16 seconds!

I'm going to go eat a HUGE lunch now, then hope I can manage 2 EASY 4 milers tomorrow so that I hit at least 30 miles this week.

Have a good Mother's Day all you wonderful moms out there!

OMG that is awesome!!!!!!! You so just motivated me to go for a long run today. I've been waiting to go for a run around the lake - it's almost 9 miles from my house and back. I think I'm going to try it today! CONGRATS ON DOING THE 13.1!!! Great timing too!!! I'm proud of ya! :)

Sunday was a relaxing day. Got up at 6:30am to run, but decided to take the day off so I washed my car, played 18 holes with my buddy, some pool and cards with some other friends, made dinner for mom ... now almost time to go off to work. I have time to squeeze in a run, but oh well, gonna watch the end of Sherlock Holmes instead.

I've definitely discovered that I can do this running thing and hit my miles as long as I get them in EARLY in the week. Missing Monday through Wednesday is why I only hit 23 miles this week. Arghh! :cuss:

I've spent the past few weeks just focusing on getting a routine down. Now it's time to watch my calories and focus on food a bit more AND hit my mileage goals. I'm sick of running so damn SLOW and walking all the time, so time to drop some serious poundage!

Goals for this week

1) Get 35-40 miles in and run 6 days

2) Eat less than 17,400 calories
(2200/day plus an extra 50 cals/mile to cover gels on my long runs and general munchiness from all the hard work).

Should be very doable since I have a long run with my coworker planned on Saturday (12 miles) and a 5K he just signed us up for on Sunday. Food has been godawful lately ... gotta stay focused all week.

Woo! Yeah, definitely BUILD UP to the 13.1. I hadn't run more than like 5 miles in months and I just decided to do it. Then I bonked out pretty hard. Definitely woke me up and made me realize I have to hit my runs and lose some weight if I want to run a 12 min pace for 26 miles straight in October! :ack2:

Only 3 more weeks before Madison!

I finished my 10k

Not hijacking the thread but I did my 10k on Sunday. I was out of town all week on business. Six flights, two countries and 6 days. I was exhausted but ran the Vancouver Sun Run on Sunday. I had been suffering a weird respiratory virus for 3 weeks but went anyway.

I did in 58:32 and finished 9732 out of 51,000 runners so I was in the top 20%. My knees hurt and my middle toe on my right foot bled like a stuck pig but I finished and I never stopped once. My pace was 9:22 per mile and I was pleased to finish.

The race itself is crazy. So many people that you can't find room to run for about 1km into the race. I survived. I wanted to be under 55 minutes but I just didn't feel it. Maybe my next race.

Holy hell! 51,000 runners! That's insane. I thought Crazy Legs with it's measly 20,000 was a madhouse. Way to go on finishing top 20%. My big goal now is to get my 3 mile run from my 12:30 pace down to under 10. Nice job!

So proud of you buddy! Glad you got that 13.1 miles in!!! Woohooo and in the morning! Nice!!!!! That's a valuable moment in itself!! hahaha

...Going on a super nice LONG run this afternoon too! Gonna think of you! :)

...YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!! DOING IT!!!! :)

Well, I still gotta work on my running schedule. I seem to miss Monday-Tuesday every single week due to work and family stuff. Guess I'll just plan on missing those days until my hours change next month.

I have a confession, my family started another Biggest Loser competition. So of course I had to weigh-in this morning, and every week now. Arghh! So much for waiting until the half-marathon! Weighed 307.5. Wooo! I lost a pound in 3 weeks! Haha! But honestly, I haven't even been trying to eat good until this week. Just getting the running routine down again. Now that I'm fattened up I'm gonna crush everyone and drop some poundage so fast heads are going to spin!

6 miles today, 12 miles tomorrow, 6 miles friday, 12 miles Saturday, 5K on Sunday. 39.1 miles for the week if everything goes according to plan. And I bought a new handheld waterbottle to carry on my long runs since my fuel belt that BARELY fit 20 pounds ago, defintely does not fit now. They have a new running store in Janesville and they have group runs 3 times a week. Awesome! Maybe in a few months once my marathon training ramps up I'll join 'em. I haven't been in a club since high school!

Woohooo!!! I am generally really driven by competitions, more so if they are with people in my immediate daily interactions. I wish that for yoU!!! You are going to SMASH them all down in the competition!

Great job on that 1 lb! That run schedule sounds SWEEEET!!!! I think I'm gonna throw in another run tonight too! :) Since I did what I had to do yesterday to give me way for today and making it a long one.

So tell me, how are the muscles recovering after your runs? You sore the next day? Also, are you running consistenly or throwing in some walking cause of the shins? How are the bottom of your feet after the runs? And your toes? Sore, not sore?

I am truly impressed by your determination and BELIEF in yourself! That's STEP 1 and the mostttttttt important step, because if you don't believe in yourself,...no one will.

Great job on that and your 1lb loss! And yes, those heads will be spinning on how much weight you lose and so fast!! Can't wait to see it happen~! :)

I seem to be recovering great, but I'm not pushing myself too much. My shins are pretty much fine now. But I seem to have lost some of my endurance (maybe it's the extra 20 pounds I'm running with now), so I walk some. I was pretty structured about it, doing like 5 min run, 1 min walk, but now I'm just kinda winging it and walking whenever I want. If I wasn't so lazy and ran slow I could probably get through my 4 milers just fine ... but I'm being LAZY! :)

Better figure it out soon though so I know what I'm doing for my half. The 12 milers are going to suck I'm sure, but hopefully less and less. I walked most of the last 4 miles last week ... smiling like a jackass the first 8 then DYING like a baby the last 5. But I'm doing 4 more 12 milers (I hope) so I should have a chance to get a gameplan and test it out.

Ha! You cheated too! LOL but I guess it was fun for a while to hold off from the scale. Usually I'm ALWAYS thinking about what the scale is gonna say in the morning. When I didn't weigh in, I really could have cared less!

You get those runs in this week! I should be doing the same.. but this crappy weather just totally ruins it for me! And I just hate the treadmill! Guess I should just suck it up and get outside, rain or shine!

The running group sounds cool, you should totally join :)

It's 9:50 p.m., storming outside, and I still haven't ran. I used to have no problem at all running late at night or early in the morning. I'd cram in runs at 5am and midnight, but when I'm looking at doing 12 miles, and, if I went now, running until 1am (taking 2.5+ hours to complete). That thought kind of sucks.

Off to a bad start. Plan was to workout right after work, but I forgot I promised my sister I'd watch Idol with her. So I watched Scooby Doo with my 3 year old nephew, helped him put together a few puzzles, and played stupid games with him all night. Plus side, I feel like I'm being a better uncle (another one of my goals), and getting a full night sleep 3 days in a row makes me feel fully rested and awake all day again. Bad side, again I put myself last and have yet to run Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

I'm probably moving out though! Looking at an apartment Friday right across the street from my sisters house. $500 a month, everything included but electric. This will fit my workout schedule soooo much better. I'd live right by the 50 miles of bike path that snakes all over Janesville. I'm so excited. Means I'll keep working like crazy through June since I need to buy EVERYTHING to fill an apartment. But my life will be so much better situated!

Your situation sounds very very much like mine was just TWO months ago. You can do it! You can work hard, and balance your life as well in all areas and excel at each. Just remember that life doesn't end by a certain date. You can continue after that day and continue for the rest of your life. You are at the perfect place at the perfect time for you and your goals!

$500 a month is AMAZING! Great find! You can totally do it with that wonderful attitude!!! You got this buddy!!! :) Really excited for you!!!! Just set a good budget and you can decorate for a low low cost. I loveeee Craigslist!!! :)....and you know how to negotiate! WOOHOO!!!...everything is for a "Low Low Price!" ...just find it!

Luckly I haven't had shin pain in over a year. I did go to 2 shoe clinics. I believe I was fitted wrong on the first pair of shoes for my half marathon the year before last. But the shoe clinic I went to last year fitted me perfectly. No shin pain that I recall on last October's half marathon. My shoes are like Cadillac's compared to the shoes prior!

I usually have to do at least a mile warmup speed walking before my muscles loosen up enough to start running sometimes.

13 minute miles is good! Cant wait till you smoke that marathon!!:sifone: Keep up the good work!

Keep it up. I'm struggling this week because after hitting my goal of running a 10k I seem to have lost all motivation. I have to get it together.

Remember, on days you don't run you only need 1800-2000 calories and no cheating. 80-90% of this is diet. if you stuck to 2,000 calories a day and got back to your old running schedule you'd win your families "Biggest Loser" challenge by a long way.

I know. I lost 50 pounds in a few months eating like 1500/day. But I can easily lose 3 pounds a week eating 2500/day with the running.

UNFORTUNATELY, I have not run all week. But tomorrow I cancelled my run with my coworker b/c I'm moving all my stuff. Decided to move Thursday night and by Saturday morning I will have saw the place, paid for it, bought a couch, 42 inch TV, stand, and be living there. Haha! Yeah, I'm kinda implusive. I have a theory that fat people in general are more impulsive. I read the other day that there's a huge link between criminals and impulsivity too. I wonder then if fat people commit more crimes than skinny people. Hmmm.

Woo! So by tomorrow night I should be all settled in and living RIGHT BY THE BIKE TRAIL, 1 mile from my running partner, and right across the street from my nephew. I may be broke as a joke and spent ALL the money I spent 6 months saving by living in my parents basement and working 60 hours a week, but it's so awesome! Assuming everything goes through. I guess I haven't been told 100% that I have it. That would suck if for some reason I didn't.

Now I just gotta get back to focusing on my half marathon. Uh, this is a weight-loss site after all. So I promise that I will run Sunday after work, right down the bike bath along the river. YES!
