A dairy from India

Hey Juni! I'm SO IN!!! I'll record my sugar intake and total calories in. I agree we will have differences but the whole accountability thing will help keep us on track! This is great! i cant wait for the challenge of tomorrow! BRING IT ON!

You know its funny, i know myself and how bummed i get with the scale, so i told myself i wouldnt weigh myself around TOM. But of course i caved. You know im pretty logical and pragmatic about every other aspect of my life, but when it comes to this i totally lose my head. I cant wait for the day where i can be more levelheaded about this.

Yeah! I'm really excited for grad school applications! I know i sound like a geek when i say this but i truly love being in school. The univ environment is so appealing to me, but it also helps that my profs are AMAZING!

Good luck with preping for the GRE's and im sure you'll be more than well prepared when it comes time to write the exam. You've got a good handle on your weight loss goal. How much harder can studying be??

What are you planning on studying?

Im with you on the accountability thing. It is already Monday in this part of the world, and I am now off to work. Good night to you and good luck. :)

Oh and I am thinking about going back to the States for a bit to go to school. I am thinking Law and Diplomacy, there are good public policy programs that I am looking at (boring stuff, I know! but it excite me somehow). Lets see. I miss being in school, and I miss the fact that you get to be so pampered in school. Also, I am beginning to miss home quite a bit (been away for more than five years now- I go back often but home is home, I guess). Not a terribly good time to go bck due to recession, but the rest of the world is feeling it too. If I do get into a good grad program, I will be out of India next time this year. My contract also ends then (unless I don't get into a good program and they decide to renew my contract). For now, I am taking it slow and steady.

Hey Juni, I just saw your other post on percentage and found my way here. Welcome to the forum :D I didn't have much to add because everyone gave you great advice. Only thing I was going to mention is there are some sites like fitday that help you keep track of your daily calories and it has a little pie chart that actually shows how much you eat came from where on the carbs, protein, etc. I know there's other sites like that too. Looks like you're off to a great start, good luck :)

Thanks for your encouraging words! :D

And its no fun running in the rain so dont worry about it! Start when you're ready, on a nice day and dont push yourself too too hard that you dont find it fun anymore! Go easy :D

and yes! I love almonds too! They work great, I eat peanuts sometimes too. I think they're nice if you need a few extra calories in your day as well. I have a hard time reaching 2400 calories without feeling overstuffed. and a handful of nuts will boost it up!

You're doing great. You'll get better with the things you cheat on. Cold turkey is too difficult for 99% of the world. so dont go cold turkey! just try to eat less of the bad stuff each time. You're improving already!

he juni, i've seen you in all these other threads so i decided to check yours out! you seem to be on the right track and not much more i can say to you but keep it up. I will say thins my first three mile run was in the rain. I actually think it helped me because it kept cool and i didn't get dehydrated. Obviously don't kill yourself out there and like previously said, have fun!

oh yeah as far as not being hungry as much.. protien takes longer to break down than say fat, which also means it takes more calories to digest protein as well. it does in fact keep you full longer. As far as running goes, i was in the same boat. About 5-6 weeks ago a lovely lady asked me to run a 5k next may. being the nice guy that i am i told her sure, even though i probably couldn't run down my block. so i went out and had to train. here we are 5-6 weeks later (i can't remember), and i was just talking about running 3 miles a day during the work week. I ran 3 miles satuirday, three miles today, adn plan onj doing it all week. i wan to try for 15 miles this week and i will most likely do it. some people recommend music, but you have a lot of time to think whenn you run, i fin dit rather relaxing now. i would say the first mile is always the hardest adn after mile 2 you can just keep going. When i do my run its always non-stop as well. so, hopefully my words will encourage you to push through, becasue i tell you it can get fun. i even run o a track and i hate running on the track, i prefer in the neighbor hood. good luck witht eh c25k. oh and i ahve don't a couple of 5k trial runs just to make sure i could do it, i just want to get fatser now.

Hey, if its something you enjoy studying then go for it!! And i totally agree life as a student although stressful at times has its advantages. I had taken some time off and worked for 2 years. I feel much happier and much less stressed now that im in school than i did when i was working. I dont know how or why, but i do know that i want to continue studying for a bit longer.

Five years is a loooong time! I was away on vacation for 10 weeks a couple of summers ago and by the end of week 4 i was beyond ready to be boarding a plane to take me home!!

It's great that you have something planned out for when your contract ends, but like you said, taking things as they come is the best way to avoid stress levels from going through the roof. Here's praying everything works out to your advantage!!!

Hello hello hello everyone,

Here's my food log for Monday:

B-8.30am- three small pieces of brown bread toast with a boiled egg

S-11am- butter milk

L 2pm- zucchini, cauliflower sautéed with herbs, boiled bulgar wheat

S 5.30- yogurt with some (very little muesli)

D 7.30- some rice with curry (the smallest portion of rice i have had since forever!).

So I was extremely good about food yesterday. Still no yoga class or running though, so that frustrates me a lil bit. But the teacher who I am going to take dance class with is coming back form his summer vacations tomorrow, so may start that from thursday :hurray: and the class is inside, so yay!

I DID NOT crave sugar yesterday. Infact, I didn't even think about it. I wonder if it is because I was full all day? I'm gonna try this again today and see...

Not going near the scales for a while. Esp now I feel bloated and disgusting due to TOM.

Douknowjello: Hello hello hello....Thank you for the advise. I have been using fitday.com (I love it, coz I can customize food as most of the food I have are not in their list). Since using that, I have come to realize that my Carb intake is high and protein intake is low. I am trying to remedy that by trying different food. Lets see. Thank you for dropping by. I was in your diary briefly and will read more this evening when I am back from work. Just want to give u a biiig hug. I know you are going through a rough patch. We are here for you, if you want to talk/vent or if you simply need some support or motivation. More later in your diary.

Nightrunner- I was sooooo good re: sugar intake. I dont have no stashes of Lindt chocolate or choc chip cookies lying around the house. But the thing is, I didnt crave sweets yesterday. At all. How is your progress going? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kureransu- hi. I haven't been to your diary yet, but I have read your writing on the forums. I think I need to be in the right frame of mind first if I want to commit to running. I want to complete the 9 weeks, and that is not possible without actually being clear in my head that I want to do. Plus, it is monsoon in these parts of the world, so running in the rain is a little difficult. I cant do it in the evening, and it has been raining EVERYDAY for the last few days here in the mornings. I love the rain, but it totally screws my exercising schedule. thanks for dropping by. Will check out your diary this evening when I get back from work. Thanks for your encouraging words.

Antyoch: You are right re: cold turkey. It is easy for a few things- like beer and cigs (maybe because they were not my biggest addiction), it is another story altogether for sweet cravings. I didnt crave yesterday, but I know that yesterday was a good day and I am gonna have bad days when I should not be too hard and let myself eat a chocolate or a cookie if I want. Also for the run, I think I need to be mentally prepared, and the weather needs to improve a little bit. I may be joining a dance class in a few days tho. So lets see...

Later...

Damn right you were!!!!!!!!!! You had such an amazing day yesterday with your food choices! and way to go for watching your portion size with the rice. I used to have servings of rice a day...until i found out how many carbs it packs. Needless to say my stomach died a small death

Not having any stashes of desserts is such a great idea! Can't eat something that's not within reach!! :)

I cant wait to hear about your dance class. I'm really excited for you since it seems with your work schedule and now the weather, getting in a workout isnt always easy.

Hope your day went well since im guessing its evening your time. I'm glad you suggested doing this together. It makes me think twice when i reach for the ice cream :D

Still having a terrible exercise week but the food intake is pretty good:

B'fast 8.30am- a big bowl of yogurt and a handful of muesli (my portion size is becoming smaller),

Snack 11am- buttermilk

Lunch 2pm- one and a half chappatis and some curry

Mini snack- someone's birthday at the office- small piece of chocolate cake:smash:

Snack- 5pm- cucumbers and a handful of chips (i felt so gross after eating those greasy chips- NEVER going near em- the cake was nice but found it a little too sweet).

Dinner- 7.30pm- one paratha, some curry

Cant wait for the dance class to begin soon.

Oh and I am totally PMSing and bloating at the same time. Ugh!

Hey juni, i read in on of your other threads that you make your own yogurt!! Mind sharing your recipe??

Of course! It is the easiest thing in the world to make. All you need is some milk some starter and a yogurt maker (but you wont even need that during the summer months)

The starter can be commercially available combination of live bacteria cultures or simply a spoonful of good store-bought plan yogurt.

Warm the milk and use the thermometer and when the temp hits 45 C pour the milk out in the container with the starter and stir. (you wont need more than a tbsp of starter). Cover the jar and place it in the yogurt maker (the point is to keep it warm) and in 6-8 hours it is ready. When the yogurt is ready you can put it in the refrigerator and if you like th thick kind, you can strain it in a muslin.

You can also do it without the yogurt maker (which is what i do during the summer). it is the same process, instead of putting the milk with starter in the yogurt maker, I cover the top and the body of the jar it with towels etc to keep it warm. It should be ready overnight.

Happy yogurt making!!

Hey Juni! Thanks for the recipe! It sounds pretty straightforward im really looking forward to making it!

You are doing a great job of watching your portion sizes! I'm reeally happy for you :) A treat here or there isnt the end of the world, and you should be proud of yourself for only taking a small piece of cake and not looking for an excuse to have a big one. looks like you had another great day!! Way to go girl!

I had an okay day....until this evening when I went out to have South Indian food and stuffed my face...:ack2:

B'fast-8.30- muesli and yogurt

Was in meetings all day so couldn't stop to eat any snack

12.30- 1/2 tuna and cheese sandwich.

2.30- a little bit more of that sandwich

5- whatever was left

6.30- beans and boiled bulgar wheat (small bowl)

8pm- some white rice, kidney beans curry (rajma), and some fried dough with spicy tangy water fillings (called pani puri)- they were so yummy. Then I had some ice-cream (mango flavour)- one scoop...and i don't even like ice-cream. what's going on?

I have to go away tomorrow for a an all-day conference thingie. I know the food is going to be bad. I will try my VERY BEST to make healthy choices. Fingers crossed.

Hey Juni! Thanks for the recipe! It sounds pretty straightforward im really looking forward to making it!

Let me know how it turns out. It is verry common in this part of the world to make your own yogurt. As a matter of fact, I started loving the creamy, tangy taste so much that I stopped buying the store ones. Now the store ones taste weird and awful. I take my yogurt without sugar or honey- it feels like they kill the taste of yogurt. I also never take sugar with my tea or coffee. Now if only I could apply the same theory and stop eating so much darn sweet stuff.

Conferences and meetings are the worst. They always serve fattening food and there's always some kind of temping dessert. :)

Hang in there. You can be strong and make good choices. And remember that a couple of days won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. You can get back on track when the meetings are done.

Oh ... I love homemade yogurt. I make my own every Sunday. It's so much better than what you can buy in the store. :)

I absolutely agree with you, Kara.

Btw, Kara, I am loving your food blog. I am really motivated to cook. I think I will, this weekend. It is hard to cook with the kind of job I have, but I should take advantage of Saturdays when I am around the house.

Hi Juni!! It looks like you're doing well :D I can't wait to see your ticker change to 7 or even 8! You can do it! :D

Thanks for the yogurt recipe, i was looking on the net to see how to make it and everything i came across made it seem soooo complicated! Yours was way easier, I'm going to have to try it! I kind of have a dumb question though :p Can you make it with skim milk? and if you do does it turn out like the non-fat stuff you can buy? I'm kind of uneducated on yogurt stuff :p Which is why I always just buy mine, the same brand every time :D

Congratz on not craving sugar that day! Why not use splenda or some other kind of sweetner, when I have the biggest hankering for something sweet i get a bowl of unsweetened applesauce and pile on the sweetner!

As for the protein powder, mind kind of tastes like a really rich rich rich white chocolate, its supposed to be vanilla, and since I really dont like white chocolate that's probably a lot of the reason I dont like it :p I should have asked for a small trial or something first! I'm sure theres others out there that taste better if you want to get into it! I find stores here push their product, whatever supplier happens to sponsor them or whatever so if you ask them which they would recommend its always a certain product which is annoying :\ oh well!!

Good luck at your conference! (If you haven't already been) I know you can do it!

and you should cook something! Kara's blog really is great :)

Hey Juni
Good luck at the conference. I always have trouble at that kind of thing.

Did your dance teacher start classes again yet? What kind of dance is it? I'm thinking of doing some dance lessons but I'm not sure what kind.

I used to love dancing when i was little.

Hey Juni, good luck at the conference!

It's Thursdayyy!!! How'd your dance class go?

I should be a little more proactive in the cooking department too but i always worry im going to mess something up or undercook the food. It's great that you have the motivation though-saturday is still a couple of days away. Why dont you plan to make something!
