70 pounds, your going down!

Hi. My name is Geoff (pernounced Jeff if you've never seen the spelling ;) ), I live in Dayton, Ohio and I'm 23 years old. I just recently joined this forum and web site and I'm looking forward to helping and getting help from all of you. My current stats are that I'm 5'9", 270lbs. My target weight I would like to get down to is 200lbs. So it's gonne be a long journey, but I'm determined to make it. I've tried dieting and exercising before and It never last very long, and whatever weight I would lose doing it, I would almost immediately gain back and then gain another 5 added on to what I was at from the start. Now I've been reading over the forums and trying to get ideas, and I am implying some of them, and them I'm mixing a routine of my own in.

But background kinda on how I got to be where I am. I've always been a kinda big guy. In Highschool I was the same height (5'9") and weighed about 200-205lbs. I was comfotable with that. I was still a little self conscious about my weight, but I think everyone always has a little bit of that. My diet was never really healthy tho. Junk food with the occasional somewhat good4u dinner with the family, but that didnt happen to often. So as I got older and moved out on my own, all I ever ate was fast food, pretty much 3 meals a day. And when I say meals, it was usually like 2 meals. Probably like an extra value meal and another double cheeseburger with it and an apple pie. ALOT OF CALORIES. And for 3 meals a day, yah you do the math, I'm suprised im not 470 instead of 270. Mostly tho that didnt start til I was 21 when a longtime girlfriend left me for another guy and broke my heart, but thats for a different forum  . So to get back to the point my diet has just been horrible with little to no exercise.

Really for my size (270lbs) I'm looking to see if what I've done for the past couple days is going to work. I would like some feedback from everyone to see if this is the way to go. I'd especially like to hear from some people who were close to the weight I'm currently and (male of female) and dropped it down a bit. So here is my efforts thus far.

Hey good luck to you man! I live about 30 miles south of you! hah kinda cool.

But hey, I have lost about 30 lbs of fat in the last year and I'm taking the rest off these next few months. Lemme start by saying, it's not easy! There are going to be times when you just absolutely want to stop. But you can't! The rewards and beneifts are so entirely worth it.

The best advice I have is to always be aware of what you are eating, and what activities you are doing. Just hightening your knowledge of this helps a TON. And the key to success is consistancy through triumph and failure.

Good luck!

Cravings Grrrr

Okay, I'm at work right now, and I went to the breakroom to eat my healthy lunch. The portion is definately not what I'm used to so I'm always still hungry, but shortly after I have eaten I am satisfied enough til dinner to where I'm not thinking about it. However, as I was eating in the breakroom, a few other fellow co-workers came in with all their fast food. Grrr. The smells made me want to break my diet and give up. I caught myself thinking "Well, when I get off work I'll go get something good (good as in BAD) and then I'll continue with my diet tommorow. So for the past few hours ive been telling myself NO NO NO, dont do it, thats how it starts and your going to be a miserable tub of lard for the rest of your life. So hard to keep with it, soo easy to give in.

you can do it have faith in yourself.. think positive, say no , my healthis important , ican do this.

If your hungry, keep snacks around that are A. healthy and B. You dont like the taste of that much.

I found this to be an immense help to me. When I got hungry, I forced myself to eat raw carrots, which i dont like. But, by forcing myself to do this, I got some food in my stomach, but the taste was enough to keep me from overeating.

Not sure if thats a recommended practice, but it worked well for me.

I also gained a bit of a taste for raw carrots. I still prefer them cooked, but I can eat them without complaining too much now.

This get's easier with time. Eventually you realize those guys are gonna be the fat tubs of lard, and you are gonna be the hot buff dude with all the ladies.

Keep at it man!

sometimes this helps me when i get cravings.
i really focus on it and think, is it really worth it? for me, i know it isn't. think of how much time you've spent being 'fat' and if you dream about being in shape, realize that you will never get there unless you start right now! because there will always be another reason why you should put it off till tomorrow.
also if you can at work, it may help you to eat 4-6 smaller meals throughout the day.
and water really helps me feel satisfied- i know it sounds like a lie, but once you get used to drinking it all day you become addicted!

we're all crossing our fingers you didn't give in! hehe, good job so far, and good luck!

I did not give in :) I went out to dinner last night with my two roommates to Ruby Tuesdays. They ordered the little sampler platter appetizer which inclued chicken stripes, roll burrito thingys, cheese sticks, and non breaded chicken wings. They offered me some, and I immdiately said no. Well after sitting there and watching them chow down on it for a few minutes I gave in and just ate one of the chicken wings. But I only had one. When it came time to order, I ordered off the healthy menu. I got a chicken dish which was a grilled peice of chicken, some steamed brocoli, and some rice with tomatoes on top. It was really delicious and the whole meal only contained about 600 calories. Im guessing with that chicken wing I had, it made it about 700 tho. But I think I handled it well.

Today Breakfast- Bannana
Lunch- Turkey Sandwich on whole wheat w/ Mustard , a small side of saltless hard pretzels, and a side salad with lite dressing.
Dinner- Grilled Chicken and Green Beans
Snack- Cottage Cheese w/ pineapple
Exercise- Cycled for about 25mins

It's been done

Just wanted to let ya know that I was in almost the same boat as you are in now at about age 14. I was 5'9" sitting at 280 lbs.

I always found that the key was to make decisions in the moment; independent of all other factors. Whenever I would go to eat something I shouldn't, or skip workouts, I would pause for a few seconds, a minute or however long it took and ask myself: "Is this really what I want?" That would usually get it done. It's not quite as easy as it sounds of course.

Another key is of course persistence and committment. The persistence to get back on the wagon when you fall off, and the committment to minimize the damage done when you do make bad decisions. Ie. if you skip a day's workout, or just have a bad day and make unhealthy dietary choices, you make the choice to not use it as an excuse to give up or play the blame game.

Lastly, I highly recommend joining some sort of a recreational sports league, a martial art, or any organization that incorporates regular physical activity. I know how hard it is, the whole "I have to be in better shape before I can do that" mentality, but it really is the best way, particularly if you're a naturally competitive person who strives to do his/her best. For serious fitness fanatics, specific training will always be desirable, but for someone who just wants to get into shape and stay there, nothing beats the fun and effortless energy expenditure of sports or the discipline and growth of a martial art.

I went from 280 lbs. to 200 in a period of about a year, stayed there for a while, then dropped down to my personal ideal weight of 160 where I've been for a couple years now. You can too if you continue to make the right choices. Best wishes.

Sunday January 9th
A bad day for eating.
Started out good and fell. Because of the Bengals. Lol.
Exercise- Jogged for 25 mins, 30 push ups
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ Raisens
Lunch/Dinner- Was at a sports bar to watch the Bengals/Steelers game and they have nothing healthy at all to eat. I had some chicken chunks, some fried veggies, and later on some chicken wings. On top of that, a lot of light beer. Bad day overrall. But i'm back on it this week and im gonna work even harder this week to try and make up for it. Actually I'm just gonna work harder to get better results all the time.

Also to add it, when I ran today, it was only my secound run. But it was alot easier than my first one and I actually enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to getting a good run in again tommorow.

Monday January 9th
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ Raisens
Lunch- Turkey Sandwich on whole wheat w/mustard, baby carrots.
Dinner-Lean Cuiseane (280 calories) side salad with light dressing, sliced pears
Snack-Small bag of dry Grape-Nuts
Exercise-Run/job for 25 mins, 25 pushups, weight training( not sure of the exercise I did with the free weights)

Okay so I'm actually feeling really good about myself. I've kept up with everything so far on my diet and exercise routine, except for Sunday. But in the past when a situation like Sunday were to happen where I broke the diet, I would just keep making excuses for the next day like, "welll i ate that yesterday, so i might as well just give up and eat fast food today." So everything is going well. And tommorow I will get to weigh in for the first time in a week. I'm not sure if I've lost anything, but even to see just a 1 pound loss for a week is going to keep me movitvated.
