70 lbs lost... before and after

Hi. I started with Atkins and now have a low glycemic index lifestyle. I do elliptical and weight training. Here are my before and after pics: I still have a bit of a gut... love handles, muffin top, whatever you want to call it. How do I get rid of that thing?

Look at you bringing sexy back! Whoo hoo!!

I did Atkins too for a while, lost close to 35 pounds on it. I just loved the way I felt on a low carb diet. No bloating or water weight ever. I'm thinking of going back that way lately, just because the weight loss was fairly consistent and faster than me just watching my calories.

I'm curious about this "low glycemic index lifestyle." I know I have a book that talks about this that I haven't fully read yet. How do you like this lifestyle? Is your weight loss steady and consistent? Any challenges?

Here's my Low GI "bible":

Doing Low GI, for me, is good for maintaining my weight. However, I find that when I eat things that drift from a true low carb way of eating (including Low GI) that I find it easier to justify eating things that aren't quite as healthy (a piece of fried food or a dessert for the most part). Now that's not necessarily a bad thing - I don't want to deprive myself of everything forever. My weight fluctuates between 173 and 178 for the most part. Whenever I get to 178, I start to really watch the carbs and even stop eating whole grain rice and bread. I guess what I'm getting at, is that Low GI and weight loss don't go together for me. Atkins/Low Carb has really been the only thing that ever worked for me to lose weight. Maybe it's because when I'm doing Atkins, I'm completely motivated toward weight loss and I do a much better job with temptation knowing that the ketosis is going to get messed up if I eat carbs or sugar. Low GI is a more healthy long term lifestyle, though. What I need to learn to do is to eat Low GI and avoid temptation. :willy_nilly:

Since I've been visiting this forum, I've been re-inspired to work on my love handles and I'm back on a very low carb diet. It's impossible to read the success stories and look at the pictures here and not get motivated!

Thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about throwing off ketosis, then it's the 2 day wait to get back there. I found that I was often not hungry on low carb, which I really enjoyed. Plus I love eating sausage for breakfast, and real cheese. LOL

It's good to know that Low GI is good for maintaining, that has always been the hardest part for me. Good for you for keeping 178 as your red line not to cross over. Way to stay in control. I think next week I might do low carb again too, just to see if it shakes up my weight loss. I'm doing weight watchers, but they do have a plan called "core" which is similar to low carb, though it allows more lower carb options, options that you wouldn't see in induction, so I will have to keep those to a minimum. Keep at it and those love handles will be gone in no time!!

Way to go, neighbor!

I say neighbor because i'm over in Picayune MS... anyway, you did an awsome job. I recently joined this forum as well and have been extremely inspired by the success stories here. And yours and everyone else's confirms my belief that there is no magic pill or diet. YOu just have to pick a healthy eating style that you can live with ( I did atkins too for a while but I discovered I could not handle it so i'm kinda low glycemic, small portions, etc) and excercise, and just keep on truckin'. :auto:

Anyway, kudos to you and keep it up!

Er, you're a hottie. And you know what, you don't have to get rid of your tummy completely. I mean, you look fine now. If what you have is excess skin I think the only way to get rid of that is through surgery. Otherwise, I'd say weight training.

Thanks catiew21, Genteel Poverty, Emi & RadiantPebble!

Well, on another note... I bought a new scale today after getting weighed at the Dr.'s office... turns out my scale is off by NINE FREAKING POUNDS!!!!!!!!!! I thought I weighed 173, but it turns out I'm 181.6. (A bought a digital one that also measures body fat by sending an electric impluse through your body - that turned out the same as my caliper measurements of 24.9%). I'm bummed that I'm practically 10 lbs heavier than I thought. Ugh. I've been using this scale all along. I wonder if I was actually closer to 255 when I started? :ack2:

But ya know what.. it's about getting healthier! And it also doesn't change the fact that you are looking amazing. I bet you were up that 10 when you started, so your accomplishments aren't any less.

Yeah, I had the flat tire action going on too, but ive been closely monitoring it, and with lower body fat percentages, the less "extra skin" i am looking at. we'll see when i drop into single digits. anyways, i implore you to start looking at bf% instead of weight at this point.

Thank you for the reassurance. As I re-read what I wrote, it really sounds whiny! As punishment to myself (and all of you apparently) I'm posting the dreaded underwear pic below (with my head cut off), that shows the love handles in all their glory. This is why I wear clothes. Well, that and because I'd get arrested at the mall without them.

Very good advice and I am now using a fat caliper and a scale that determines fat percentage.

And now, with much hesitation... the muffin tops... :puke:

I just have to tell you this... you look like Paul Rudd from the movies Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin.

And just in case you have no clue who he is/what he looks like...

Never heard I looked like him! But I'll take it! I've heard Matthew Lillard a few times... he played Shaggy in the Scooby Doo movies... LOL!!!

I dunno...

Ugh... these pounds are tough! I've also been struggling with exercise the past few weeks. I had to go out of town for a new job for few days which screwed up my schedule and kept me from working out. Then it was tough to get back on schedule. Now I've been doing home study for 2 weeks which has had me sedentary. I've been unmotivated to exercise which is my own fault and I'm noticing it in being tired & not feeling like waking up in the morning. I haven't stopped eating right though - not eating junk and I haven't put on any weight... so that's a good thing. Last night I did get an hour of elliptical in and I plan on doing that again tonight. Once I get started, I'm fine... it's just getting back in the habit after being broken of it.

I'll have to be careful because I go to formal training with this new job on the 21st. I'll be in New York (right outside of Manhattan!) for 2 weeks straight. I'm staying at a place that has a gym, so I've got no excuse.

Must. Stay. Motivated. :banghead:

Hey, good stuff - thats an impressive loss!

I know what you mean about the last bit, its soooo hard to lose, my bf% is 19-20% and i still have the ''muffin top'' think you have to get down to 16 or 17% for them to disappear, but i've been at this stage for a good while now :(

Keep it up, i'll be following the progress man.

And haha Matthew Lillard uncanny.

Thought I would pop by and see your progress. Don't harass yourself over silly muffin tops; rather, relish the accomplishments you have made. This is amazing progress! The results will come.

As for getting rid of them, there's a series of moves from Power 90 that may help you that I do in the one circuit. I'm horrendous at describing physical movements, but I shall do my best. Each circuit in Power 90 is a 3 portion series. The one is a knee up section. Each time you bring your knees up you have to make sure you are engaging your abdominals. You also incorporate your arms into the move, poised above your head and pulling them down as you bring your legs up. The first move is just the simple knee up, pulling the arms down combination. The second is very similar, however your knees must come up to the side of your body to work your obliques. The third you resume the normal knee up position, but twist your upper body into the move.

And, because Youtube is amazing, . The first movements are from this section I am describing. Sure, it may be speeded up, but it demonstrates the moves on a level which my words fail.

Hope this helps! I know this section has really helped with my stomach. The slimming has started from my obliques and continuously worked inward. I'm just waiting for my abs to be revealed!

WOW! That's a big difference!! Awesome job!!

Thanks! You've both had great success as well!

I'll have to come back to refer to this when I start focusing on the negatives. You're so right and I usually do focus on the accomplishments. Then I see myself naked and see what I still want to do. I'll have to look into that toning advice you posted. Thanks!

So I just looked at this post again -- and omg you look so great! And you totally do look like Paul Rudd! :)
