10 weeks into my biggest loser competition

I'd just like to start off by telling everyone a little about myself. I am 24, 6' tall, I work in an office where I usually sit at a desk all day, and when I started my "lifestyle change" on 12/10/07 I weighed in at a hefty 318.8 lbs! I am starting this diary to help keep me motivated as I continue my weight loss and lifestyle change and also to help motivate anyone else that may be in my shoes. I have tried to lose weight probably 10+ times in the last few years and the last few times I have done the exact diet I am doing now only to quit 2 weeks in and gain it all back. I know the thing that I can blame for my success this time is competition!

Some friends/family/co-workers and I decided to start our own Biggest Loser style competition. We have 3 teams with 3 people on each team. We weigh in every friday. Everyone has to bring a new bottle of water to each weigh in and so the team that wins each weigh in gets everyones water. Most people I tell this to ask why don't we do something that is worth more? If you get the right group of compeitive people the actual prize doesn't matter, its just the point that you won and get to take something from the other teams. Also, bottled water is cheap..since we are all at different points in our financial lives something cheap works great.

We started on December 14, 2007 with the intent to run a 18 week program and end on April 11, 2008. Yesterday was the end of week 10 and so far everyone is doing well. Everyone admits that there is no way they would be where we are today if they didn't have to worry about dragging their teams down in the weigh in. I know that has been the difference for me and if you are having trouble sticking to a plan then I would try and see if you can get some people you know to do something similar.

As of the last weigh in I was 282 lbs which gives me a total loss of 36.8 lbs! Which isn't too bad especially when you consider we had Christmas, New Years, and the super bowl in there! I'm shooting for 230 by the last weigh in which I know is a lofty goal but I think if I stick to my diet and workouts I can hit it.

I did a lot of research on a MMA forum which helped me come up with my diet:

Workout first thing
9:00 Breakfast - Protein Shake
10:30 Snack - Spinach/other veggies/orange
12:30 Lunch - Tuna or a salad
2:30 Snack - Spinach/other veggies/orange
5:00 Dinner - Chicken Breast or a salad
8:00 Snack - Shake or Spinach/other veggies/orange

I try to stick to that the best that I can but it isn't realistic at least with the stuff that I have going on to expect to follow that perfectly everyday. But it at least gives me an idea of where I need to be. Sometimes I go out to dinner or lunch but instead of ordering the crap I used to order I try and get salads or grilled chicken. And I never drink soda anymore, I think that alone made a HUGE difference. If you have to get fast food the best thing I found are the side salads at Wendy's. I usually order one of those if I forget to bring lunch or if I'm in a hurry. I get italian dressing but only use half the package. Plus they only cost $1! On a side note I've noticed an increase in funds available in my checking account because I dont eat out 1-3 times a day, that adds up so fast!

For my workouts right now I am just doing cardio. I try to do 60-90 minutes on the treadmill combination of running/walking 5-6 times a week. Sometimes when I am short on time I'll cut it down to 30 minutes but try to push myself a little harder. I think the main thing is to make working out a priority! There have been a lot of days where I wasn't able to stick to my "plan" and work out in the morning so I ended up working out at 9:00 at night. I think that is a way better option than just saying "Oh well, i'll just skip today and do it tomorrow." You have to make it a PRIORITY!

what a cool fun way to loose weight.! good luck on winning and loosing the rest of the weight!

How are all 3 teams doing? whos winning? whos lost the most overall? and is there the 1 person whos not really trying ?
 
One team did have a 4th team member for a few weeks but they kicked him off their team cause he wasn't taking it serious and actually gained weight every week. But for the most part everyone is doing pretty well. All together we have lost 180 lbs which is 8% of our combined weight. Right now another guy and myself are neck and neck with the highest percentage lost. I've actually lost a few more lbs than him but he didn't weigh as much at the start but we are talking about a .03% difference!

There are mixed results from the other people. Some people have lost around 25 lbs others have only lost 10-15 lbs, but there is no doubt in anyones mind that they wouldn't have done this well if they were just trying to do it on their own. Also we had a wide range of starting weights. Anywhere from 147 to 321. Everyone is down at least 5% from where they started and the other guy and I are around 11.5%.

It is definitely fun and a great way to lose weight if you can get competitive people. Everytime I go out to eat or want to raid the fridge late at night I have to think about the upcoming weigh in and what it will do to my team if I mess up. So it has been a tremendous help to me!

We were supposed to weigh in today but because of some crazy cirucmstances at our office we decided to skip this weeks weigh in(which I was against!) It was a bad week with the stuff we had/have to deal with but I just hope we don't get in the habbit of cancelling these. Especially with only 7 more to go!
 
Well not having the weigh on Friday kinda screwed me up. I didn't do as well on my diet but I did still get my workouts in so I think I'm about even. Here is the updated numbers with no weigh in...

My workout got cut short today...only got in 45 minutes... but I did stick to my diet pretty well so hopefully I am on my way to a great weigh in this week.
 
:waving: Hi! Congratulations on your loss so far - what a cool way to do it! I am sure you're feeling waaaay better already; physically, but also just better about yourself! At least I know I do.

Thanks! I am feeling a lot better, both physically and mentally! I can fit in clothes now that I couldn't fit in 2 years ago! That is very motivating for me and I seem to get people that notice how much I've lost all the time which doesn't hurt either.
 
Wow your doing great! What great motivation!!!I totally feel you on the meal plan. When I am doing my best with weight loss i tend to eat the same meals daily it totally helps me stay on track because there is no guess work in it.
 
Well not a great day so far... Just got done with the weigh in and for some reason I came in at 277.4 for the official weigh in but before and after I was 276.4. Either way was not good because I was really expecting to be in the 274 range. Oh well... Not much I can do at this point and I guess it could be worse!

We all have a company convention next week in L.A. so we are skipping next weeks weigh in. Everyone admitted that their goal for this week is just to not gain any weight so I think I'm going to focus and still try to lose a few pounds. The hotel has a gym so I can get my workouts in, the hard part will be the diet... especially since we don't have Jack in the box in utah and they will be all around me for a week lol. But I think I can get through it. 7 weeks to go!

I almost forgot... There was a little bit of good news today... The guy who is closest to me actually gained .3 so I moved up quite a bit compared to him. I am down 13.05%(41.4lbs) and he is down 11.49%(34.9lbs)... Got to hit it hard this week to stay ahead!
 
We just got back from convention yesterday. It was awesome but unfortunately I didn't stay focused. I did get most of my workouts in but my diet was horrible... Knowing that I didn't have to weigh in for 2 weeks screwed me up. I haven't weighed myself yet but I know I got a lot of work to do just to get back to where I was...
 
Just get yourself back on track and you'll be fine...

have you noticed if your clothes are fitting tigher or any gains there? then it might not be a big deal...
 
Well we just got done with the weigh in... Considering how bad I did on my diet the last two weeks I am actually not too disappointed. I ended up gaining .4 lbs. Luckily I had a big enough lead that I was able to hold on to it but now its a pretty close race between 3 of us. We are all within .6% of each other so it should be a good competition for the next few weeks until the final weigh in. I am ready to hit it hard this week... One of my goals through this whole thing is to lose double digits in a week so I think I will make this week the week that I lose 10+ lbs!

I have been busy lately and didn't get a chance to post last week. Maybe it was because I did terrible last week too lol...I only lost .2 lbs! But this week was good, I got back on track with most of my workouts and my diet was way better too!

I ended up losing 6.8 lbs this week. We only have 2 weeks left so I had to readjust my goal. I plan on losing 7 lbs a week for the next 2 weeks which would put me down to 256.8 at the end of the contest.

I think we are going to start another contest and get a new group of people because half of the people aren't taking it too seriously anymore. The top 3 of us are still fairly close. 3rd place 36 lbs/12.59%, 2nd place 40.8 lbs/13.43%, and 1st 48 lbs/15.06%. I feel lucky to still be at the top since the 3 weeks prior to this week were pretty much a waste. I just gotta keep going strong and finish out on top!
