300 to 250 in 5 months...

Just to start off, I'm no expert in this area and i am going to give you my two cents.

Your motivation to lose weight is great, you know what you want and where you want to be but having trouble getting there. I really think you need to work with your eating habits. No breakfast, whatever for lunch and popcorn for dinner??? How long do you think you can realistically keep this up? You need to change your lifestyle.

Make sure you read the stickied threads in nutrition if you haven't already. You should really figure out how many calories you are required to eat to lose weight. Then make up six meals a day. I did this because i never wanted to be hungry and eating 6 times always kept me full. I used a lot of high volume and low cal foods to make sure i was full. Salads with lunch and dinner, that sort of stuff.

Always make sure you are prepared with healthy snacks. If you ever get hungry and dont have a healthy snack available you will reach for the easiest, which usually is junk.

Measure all your portions so you are as accurate with your calorie counts. People are surprised when they see how small portions are. Journal your food. This helps when you want to see why you had a good or bad week.

Don't be afraid to eat a meal from home when you are at business meetings at work. I'd be sitting in meetings when they are passing around a menu for lunch. I would pass because i brought my own salad. At first they poked fun but after they saw how serious i was they were supportive.

Hope this stuff helps and stay motivated. You can do this.

Matt

Thank you for the advice, Matt. I really do appreciate it.

I experimented with 6 smalls meals a day. What I found was that several small meals did not satisfy me. Rather, I'd overeat on at least one of those small meals a day.

As far as how long can I keep this up...indefinitely. I've struggled for some time to understand my body and how to best lose weight around my natural cycles. This is working so far. One week, 2 lbs lost. Perhaps I'll have to adjust as time progresses, but I'm prepared to do that.

Thank you again!

You're a human vacuum because you are starving yourself. There is no way you cant be hungry with the little food you are eating. So, when something is put infront of you of course you are going to eat.

Remeber, this should not be a "diet". A "diet" is something that is short term. I lifestyle change continues for a long time. You need to learn healthy habits that you can sustain for a long time.

How long did your experiment work? I hope it was long enough to really see if it was working.

In regards to your exercise, i find it hard to beleive you cant find 1/2-1 hour to work out. I know everyone is busy but many people find time to exercise. I see you work at home, IMO that would make it easier.

I appreciate your perspective. I guess it can be hard to understand unless you've been in someone else's shoes. I guess to clarify...I was a human vacuum even when I was overeating. I am not proud of that.

The experiment is going on now two months. It is nowhere near finished. I've had ups and downs and discovered these things about myself.

As far as exercise...I agree. I have no excuse. Working for a startup is frustrating though, 16 hour days are not uncommon.

Your right i have never been in your shoes and i dont know exactly what you are going through. I can only speak from my experiences and what worked for me. i started out at 350lbs. I made it down to 200 lbs and float anywhere from 200-208 for the past two months.

when i asked about your experiment i meant with eating 6 meals a day. This keeps me full all day long which helps me from overeating.

I wish you the best with your weightloss. I can tell you that there are few things that feel better than acheiving your weightloss goals.

Keep reading the forums because there's a lot of good stuff on here.

Stay focused!!!!

Matt

Wow, congrats on that loss! I'm hoping to be where you are in about a year.

How long did your loss take you? How are you doing with stretch marks/varicose veins/loose skin?

Hey Sillywilly, I wondered where you went to! Apparently I was watching the wrong thread...your first one that got bumped into the diary section :X

I'm glad you've found something that is working for you but I have to agree with Matt, I think this isn't something that you'll be able to do as a lifechange. But you seem to be willing to modify as you go so that's in your favor :) As long as you just switch it up and don't quit altogether if you find yourself sick of this or frustrated at some point then you should be in good shape.

And I'm in the same boat as you...my exercise isn't where it should be but I am more active and having great results so I just looked at it as another thing that I could improve on that leaves me somewhere to go if my body trys to plateau on me :)

Keep up the good work ~Lisa

Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't mean to have two threads going at once. I decided to pick this one and run with it.

It is a learning process I think. All I know is that the way I was eating wasn't working.

This is going to sound horrible, but here it goes...

For months I:

1) Wouldn't eat breakfast
2) Went out for lunch...often fast food or all you can eat
3) Didn't work out at all
4) Would get hungry at night and order pizza, or breadsticks, or some other garbage to be delivered along with "diet soda"

Not only was that expensive, but awful for my health.

I might have been taking in over 4,000 calories per day.

Now I'm probably between 1,250 and 1,600.

A friend of mine who majored in chemistry said that if I am using CLA, I should complement it with Flaxseed oil. Something about Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids working together.

Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks. Took me about 16 months.

Stretch marks- yes, varicose veins- no, loose skin- yes.

Do i care? Not nearly as much as i cared or worried about being fat. I will take loose skin any day over fat filled skin. Sure i will never have a six pack but i can fit in a damn seat at Fenway Park next to my daughter. I can take my son on a roller coaster without be told, "sorry the bar wont close."

No actually I had never heard of it but I googled it and wow...it says it helps with people who have thyroid problems and even insulin problems like me.

Of course this is only one article but maybe google it and see if you can find a forum or anyone else blogging about it that takes the flaxseed oil? Either way flaxseed oil is good for you so it won't hurt. I've read about alot of people taking it, especially people doing strength training.

Ok I came back to edit, lol. Better read this too Especially scroll way down where it's talking about the pills. Again it's only one article but you may want to do some research of your own. Good luck :)

Excellent research! I'm always leery about internet sites with health articles. I always look for motivation. For instance, what is About's motivation? To provide information and make money off of advertising.

What is EatWild's motivation? They seem to be an industry focused group promoting the grass fed dairy and meat industry. The angle they take on CLA is that you should eat it from animals (especially those that are grass fed) and avoid pills. I question their motivations.

More research is prudent. Thank you!

You make some VERY valid points...honestly that had not occured to me. I always research pretty thorough on stuff before I form an opinion because some places can just flat out be wrong. But I never thought about them having their own agenda. That's gonna help me in the future...thanks for that tip :D Did you ever find anything referencing the flax seed oil with the CLA? Not that flaxseed oil is bad but it'd be nice to know if it's necessary with it.

Lunch today...

So, I usually eat lunch around 12. Work things kept me until 1:30. If you haven't read earlier, I don't eat breakfast because I don't need it.

Let me tell you though, my stomach was GROWLING at 1:15. I went to subway and got a footlong, grilled chicken sandwich. I loaded it with veggies and honey mustard on whole wheat bread. All for $5 bucks!!!

I popped my 3 grams of flaxseed oil and 4 grams of CLA and started chomping...Delicious!

I never knew eating well could feel so good.

I estimate this sub probably tops out at 750 calories...but good calories.

ROCK ON!

That is SO funny....I just got on here and read your post before anything else...and guess what I just got done eating? $5 footlong, lmao. Mine is sweet onion teriyaki but while I was in there I asked for the nutrition guide. I'm sure it's online too but I can look it up for ya :) If you had the oven roasted chicken breast, says on wheat but the italian and wheat are same calories, it's 310 for 6'. So only 620 for footlong. Seems to include all the veggies but not the cheese or any dressing or mayo. The cheese seems to be about 100...anyway weird coincidence, lol

Haha, I guess that means Subway had done a good job in their advertising efforts.

Scary though...The Tuna Sub is one of the worst ones for you!

Ohhh...good to know cuz I almost got that one but didn't bother looking. Guess if I'm gonna eat tuna I'm gonna make it myself...not pay for it. Plus my cats wouldn't have let me finish the dang thing anyway so that'd been more work that it was worth.

Hey SillyWilly,
Let me say first off that reading your diary reminds me of, well...me. Without the flaxseed and such, haha. Our goals to lose weight and become healthier are similar, but I think mind tricks is the clincher. I had the impression whilst reading your words that your intentions are very good, but you catch yourself up. I often say that I am my own worst enemy, becuase it's true. As it is for most of us. I'm not very educated on nutritional value, in fact I really only have a basic understanding of it, enough to know the Big Mac bad, Garden Salad good. I can't give you advice on omega 3's and 6's...okay, I will stop saying what I can't do, as this is very counter-productive. What I can do for you is this:

All I know is what I have gathered in my short 21 years. An appreciation for life. Life is what you make it, you know that no one can live your life, no one can be you. In fact, I heard a quote once that says, "Your life is so difficult that no one else could live it." Only you can be who you want to be. We often get lost in the end result, in those skinny jeans, in that bikini (or whatever, haha) that we lose focus on the day to day things. The small things. I like how you talk about what derails you, I'd love to see you talk about little successes more. (Like your sub! I had one today!! Haha.)

I feel like I'm rambling unnecessarily. If you are at all like me, then you already know all this. (Sorry for the redundancy if that's the case.) It helps to hear it again though. When you're all alone, when it's actually quiet, when you can actually think uninterrupted. . . what things do you think of yourself? You don't actually have to answer me on that one, but I want you to think about it. Not outward qualities, like "Oh my, I'm fat" but inward qualities. Oftentimes we set ourselves up for failure because we focus far too often on whats outside, and ignore the inside. A dilapidated house can be rebuilt, but if it's on the same old crumbly foundation, it will fall faster and harder than before.

The very simple fact that you are trying is very noble, most often quit before they can even start for fear of failure. Don't fear failure, fear apathy. I'm not scared to fall, I'm scared I won't stand in the first place.

Positives

1) I have a fantastic family. I am the oldest of four (1 bro, 2 sis) and the product of two loving parents (26 years and counting). I have excellent relationships with all of them that I only see growing stronger with age. I also have a supportive extended family and I count one of my cousins as a best friend.

2) I am extremely successful for my age. I am 25 years old and I have somehow landed in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I work in a very competitive industry and I've been given a chance to build a business with the support of some of the best mentors one could ask for and a well-established history as an industry leader and innovator (the company that is).

3) I've got a ton of great friends. I'm one of those people who has mastered both the loose connection and strong connection. Loose connections are those people you run into who you may or may not see for months/years, but when you see them again both parties are pleased. Strong connections are family and friends whom you can tell your most personal secrets.

4) I've got some of the best friends in the world...I'm talking friends of 20+ years. Although we are scattered all over the country, we are still close.

5) People love me. I don't get it sometimes, but people do. I'm often described as funny, deep, loyal, humble, driven, and positive...

6) Not PG =) I'm confident in myself. Hello ladies :reddevil:

Negatives

1) I realize I've become too career focused. I'm happy I realized this at a young age. A lack of balance is a killer. I don't want to be 45 and realize I'm a booming success, but only those who are making money off of my efforts care...

2) I lack religion. I believe in ... I don't know. I lack that really deep understanding of a greater power. I really do envy people who have that faith. For instance, I work with members of the LDS community (mormon, but they don't like to be called that). These are some of the happiest people you have ever seen. They are stressed out and stretched to their limits, but you can tell they have it together...

I was raised Catholic, but the Priest scandal really shook my foundations in that aspect. I was not directly affected, but how can one put faith in an organization that is supposed to represent a moral compass, while it actively delivers our most innocent into the hands of the most evil...

3) I'm alone right now in my life. I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast for work -- a 3,000 mile move. I've been out here for a year and I'm still eagerly trying to lay my roots. Perhaps this takes time. I really do miss those I love. I made this move for work. Sometimes I feel I made a selfish move.

4) I lost a best friend in a very tragic way. I attribute my weight gain to this. He committed suicide. It was 4 years ago. Rather than coping in a healthy way, I turned to eating and drinking. The correlation is no accident. I know I am the only one responsible for my health, but my feelings of loss, anger, and remorse can be seen on my stomach in the form of stretch marks - an external reminder of my very mortality.

5) I fear failure... I've always been a success. I take failure well, but I can't picture totally failing... This is sort of tough to put into words. This is not a result of my parents, they support me and love me no matter who or what I am. This is internal.

6) I think too much. Which is probably clearly evidenced here!

Well, there it is...

Well, that was more than I expected, if I may, I'd like to comment on some of them, I sincerley hope you don't take my words offensivly, as this is not intended at ALL!

Positives:
1. Family support is crucial, it's good to know that you have a good family front. I'm the same way family wise.

2. Your success: All I can say on this one is Bravo, if I may ask, what company is allowing you this success? Again, you do not have to answer that if you wish not to.

3. I like how you categorized friends into loose and strong connections, it's not only good on a personal level, but learning to do this and "prioritize" (if that's a good word) will lead to less stress and more fulfillment in your relationships.

4. For being 25, and having the same friends for practically the same amount of time as your age is awesome. I hold dear to my old friends, theyre the ones who have seen you through some of your most crucial development stages. Again, a great support group!

5. Those qualities listed aren't hard to see, in your post you can see some of those shine through, I anticipate that those qualities will continue to grow and take a deep rooted hold through this journey too.

6. ...By saying I won't comment on that one should be comment enough, haha.

Negatives:
1. "A lack of balance is a killer": Truer words have yet to be spoken, recognizing this however will ensure your success in that department. With a little work and a whole lotta hoping it should come.

2. I'm having a hard time replying to this one, perhaps some back story before I reply. I grew up in a Christian household, attented church, youth groups, went on to Bible College with the hopes of growing closer to God and my community. I started having doubts, which is not uncommon, looong story short, I can't say I am fully convinced in the Catholic/Christian perspective of God. You need to know me to know that I am not a floater switching between religions. I found some facts and researched them...this is why I'm no longer convinced. ANYWAY, that being said, not having a religion isn't necessarily a bad thing. Belief...in something is crucial. I still struggle without God, it is a very hard 'habit' to break. I was my happiest while walking with the Lord, but for me, things are either all or nothing, I don't have the belief, so I can't put my all into something that may not be there. I found (and this is based on working with all kinds of people) that when people believe in something bigger than themselves, they tend to be happier. Like your observation with the LDS community. (I really didn't know they preferred that better as a side note.)
I honestly believe that we will always lack a deeper understanding of a higher power. I could ramble forever, so I'll try to keep this short, for me, now, until I find my faith in something, I believe in the ability of the human spirit. We can do miraculous things, if we believe it. I am NOT trying to sway you away from any belief you may hold, hence the reason I didn't share the facts that caused my disbelief, I am simply trying to get across this: You must believe in something, but don't beat yourself up if it's not what you think it should be. Make sense? I hope so.

3. Ah yes, "selfishness" to better oneself. If I may boldly say, at 25 and to be as successful as you are, with the understanding of that success like you do, doesn't appear to be selfish. A smart career choice yes, but unless you have fallen off of the face of the earth and refuse to talk to said loved ones, please don't add that to your pile of stress. I'm sorry that you feel lonely. I can only relate on a small scale, my parents moved a province over three weeks ago, so I miss them and that support. But I still am 'home' so I still have easy contact with friends and live with my wonderful brother and sister. It's a very brave thing doing what you did. I sincerly hope things work out for you.

4.It breaks my heart when I hear stories of this nature. All I can do is offer my condolensces. Very rarely do people cope in the "right way". I truly loved this line that you wrote: an external reminder of my very mortality. We are mortal. We won't be around forever, this is the very proof of needing to make the most of the time we have.

5. Failure comes in many forms, just like success does. What is your total picture of failure? Business failing? Relationships failing? It's such a broad subject to try and define that we tend to group everything into one. "Failure" So...I love football okay, favorite sport. It's not rare for me to talk about it/read about it/write about it everyday in some form, (even offseason, lol) In reality, a team that goes undefeated (in my opinion) doesn't have quite the same advantage as a team that loses. We NEED failure in some way. It is our motivation. Reminds me of "a walk to remember", I haven't seen it in years, but a line in the movie has stuck with me. It said without pain, there could be no compassion. Without failure, there cannot be success. How would you measure it? Everything in life is relative. There are opposites to all. This is the spectrum that we need to base what we consider failure and success.

6. And I talk too much, which you have found.

Well, there you go.
